Nice hilly and forested national park, known for its fire salamanders and century old beeches. The park can be explored from several parking lots. We decided to use P3, instead of the parking lot at the info center (P1), because of its more central location in the park and direct connection to the woods. Lots of information is available at the info center, the staff is very nice and the trails are marked very well!

In April, there is a paucity of bicycle hire places in the area; some are only open every second day (go figure why) but, the Kellerwald National Park Centre had two (count 'em) electric bicycles for hire. This was our primary reason for visiting. However, the centre also has an excellent display and theatre and plenty of information about the local plants and animals found in the park. We took the electric bikes on the Edersee Randweg 2, a 28km round trip across the high parts of the park and returning along the Eder valley. The bikes were faultless. They assist you pedalling up steep or long inclines, though not actually pedal for you! Be aware that the centre doesn't open until 1000 (at least when we visited) so why not try one of the other walks about the places (there are many) beforehand?
