The museum's opening is the result of the discovery in 1993 of a remarkable 1100 year old palace within its walls. It's the best conserved Carolingian civilian building in Europe.Since the 10th century till nowadays, the castle has been used as : palace, fortified castle, prison and now a museum. You will discover the castle history as well as archaeological collections from the Middle Ages.

This castle and museum is fascinating for its architecture, dating back to Carolingian times (8th-9th centuries), and full of interesting exhibits, including separate exhibitions, a special Joan of Arc room, archaeological artefacts, and audio-visual displays. Highly recommend.

Great place for a couple of hours. The views up the valley are amazing. The museum it's self is very interesting and free on the Sunday we visited.

This is well worth a visit, plenty to see, with excellent displays and roman artifacts. The building itself is also outstanding, overlooking the river Mayenne.
