If you combine hiking up the SanHuangZhai and the Shaolin Temple and its ground, it makes an excellent whole day trip. Start early by taking a taxi to the park entrance - the ticket office of SanHuangZhai. (The wisdom of doing it this direction is so that when you finish the day at the Shaolin temple, you can easily catch a public bus or get a taxi to go back into the Deng Feng town. The bus went to the main bus station and we saw travelers who jumped straight onto a bus to Zhengzhou). From the bottom, it is a steep climb straight away and it is all stone stairs/steps. The signs with explanations in Chinese and good English about the rock formation and how it is the way it is today, made up of vertical rock surfaces in layers and how it was formed 2 billion years ago, made very interesting and informative read. The walk along the mountain cliff is an exceptional experience. At the end of the cliff walk, there is a cable car to take you down to where the Shaolin temple is. We however walked all the way down to the temple. The walk is not particularly attractive, so to save time, I think it would just work to take the cable car down to the temple. The hike/walk from ticket office to the start of the Shao Lin Temple ground including stopping time to take pictures took in total around 5 hours for us.

This is not exactly a scenic resort, but likely your start or end point if you wish to hike Mount Song. Please see my review on Mount Song for my hiking experience.
From the base of mountain, it is a steep climb, hundreds of steps before one reaches the monastery. Unfortunately, visitors are not allowed inside the compound. Hence I could only take photos of the external buildings and surrounding. The monastery compound was quiet and quaint, against the mountain backdrop.

So good to hike here, mountain side road is exciting. Beside the entrance of the mountain, sometime you may see some Kungfu practice. The mountain is so beautiful with strong rock in book shape.

It's not an easy way to reach the temple on the top, takes about 2.5-4 hours but worthed to walk as much as you are able to.
Sometimes the road is narrow and slippery.
On the way back you can take the cablecar.

This hike is an under-reported excursion taken by few westerners. That is probably because the cable cars were just upgraded in 2015 and the temple at the end, which makes for a great destination, was just restored less than two years ago. Really amazing hike, with great vistas and crags. Safe, so long as you stay on the trail. There are sturdy railings and path broad enough. Suspension bridge looks new, too, and sturdy. Super cool hike, highly recommended.

A cable car ride up the mountain from the Shaolin Temple, this was truly a top five best thing I have seen in the world. Start your day here and get ready to walk. Hopefully the weather is nice, but even on a cloudy day it is worth a trip. You can see a few feet or see forever depending on the clouds.

We took the Shaolin cableway to reach the starting point of a completely amazing skyroad ... peaceful, mystical, surprising and unique ... the walk to the Village is a fantastic journey ! 2 h to reach with a nice wind ... a must to start with then come back and enjoy Pagodas forest and Shaolin temple (less crowded in afternoon)
A must see and feel.

It's not a scenic resort, it's just scenery, Very nice scenery I grant you, but it's a very long walk along narrow paths to get to a temple that won't let you in because it's there to get away from people like you. If you take the cable car halfway, you still need to budget a couple of hours each way. Cracking views though.
