My wife and I did the tour of the Buddhist temples in a half day tour and the following day visited two Old Believers villages with Alisa as guide and Elena as driver. We were very happy with our tours. Alisa is knowledgeable about the history of Buddhism in this region and we were able to have discussions with her about local Buddhist practice. I appreciated her openness to the local Buddhist culture and she was very respectful of their practices. Alisa was equally knowledgeable about the Old Believers. After touring the village museum at Tarbagatai, she translated as I plied the village priest with numerous questions. He was very kind and patient and generous with his time. He even showed us the extravagant handmade gate to his house which was crafted by his son. We were also hosted for a meal in an Old Believer home. It was a leisurely 2 hour meal and conversation with Nadia, our host. Once again, she was happy to translate my endless questions and Nadia's responses. These tours were an excellent value. Alisa and Elena are an excellent team!

Thank you for offering such a diverse one-day tour to Ivolginskiy Datsan and a village of old believers near Ulan Ude! Tuyana made this tour possible at short notice and opened my eyes for Buddhist traditions and the lives of orthodoxe old believers in modern Russia. Our stay at a family's house including delicious Russian food was a very special and unique experience. Recommendation!

Darima and Alexey - a very professional Za Baikalom team. Darima - very knowledgeable guide who does not make you feel like she is just another guide but rather someone telling you stories - historical and current - about the places you visit on tours and how some of them are related to her own life and family. Always nice to learn the personal impact of the places you travel to. Alexey - excellent driver. When my dad started taking pictures through the window (well, he takes a million pictures), Alexey was out during stops ensuring that the widows are spotless considering we visited during winter time and had snowy conditions. Everything from the reservation to the food was excellent. I think its pretty clear from tour descriptions what you will see while visiting Ivolginsky Datsan and Oldbelievers, hence i will comment only on "Baikal West". If you want to learn about nature - plants and wildlife - around Lake Baikal, that's the tour for you. Besides a hike, visitor center, museum, and other items as listed in tour description, Darima ensured we were on time to see live sables. What a treat to see these animals! Overall excellent experiences on both tours.

We did 2 day tours with the company during our stay in Ulan Ude. On both days we had Tatiana as our guide and Sergei as our driver and they were both excellent. The first day was a half day visit to the Ivolginsky Datsan. This was such an interesting place to visit and having Tatiana with us was brilliant in helping us to understand the significance of the place and she also told us more about Tibetan Buddhism that is practised here. On the second day we went with Tatiana and Sergei to the Old Believers village. This was a day tour and we stopped on the way at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the river, which was beautiful. We also went to a little museum and church in an Old Believers village and learned more about their faith and rituals. We then went to our host family and were welcomed into their home for a delicious lunch, music and singing and we participated in the wedding ceremony. It was fun, but also really informative and Tatiana was able to translate for us as we asked many questions of the family about their lives. Would really recommend Za Baikalom and Natalia in particular, who has excellent English and was very happy to answer our questions about life in Siberia. A great way to learn about the culture.
