    Well worth the visit
There is a good website, so I will just say that this villa is stunning. Getting there from Stresa is very easy - plenty of boats running very frequently. We paid 26.50 euros for the boat ride and the villa, or 29 euros gives the option to do Isola dei Pescatore as well - you then just hop on the boats when you are ready. Pescatore is the Isle of the fishermen and there are good fish restaurants. More expensive down where the boats land, but we had a good lunch for two for 26 euros in a small restaurant away from the front - and added a litre of excellent rose wine for 12 euros!

    The most beautiful island
What an amazing island and visit. It is a must-see. We spent a day (6 hours exactly) visiting the beautiful palace and the gardens. We also had a quick lunch/snack at the Caffetteria Torre Noria. The highlight of our visit was the Palazzo Borromeo with the famous Berthier gallery with more than 100 paintings, the throne room, and above all the 6 grottoes. These 6 rooms were built for the summer. The decoration made of stone incrustations, black marble slabs, and stuccos in the form of shells, turtles, and sea divinities, is just outstanding. The Baroque Italian-style gardens are just amazing. The parterres are filled with beautiful flowers, cedars, lemons, palm trees, peacocks, and more. From my personal point of view, you need a whole afternoon to visit Isola Bella, especially if you like painting, furniture and history. My only negative comment is the audio guide which kept constantly reloading. The system is not working properly.

Great Royal Baroque Palace on Island: Isola Bella
Greatest garden and palace ever. Been everywhere in Europe, Asia and MEA however this beats all. Attention as not fun queuing during holidays (especially Italian, German, Benelux school holidays) so avois. Take public ferry to Island (10 Euro per adult) and choose your island. Isola Bella is really a MUST visit !

Fabulous gardens but you have to pay to go through house first...
Felt a bit ripped off when entering, hence 4* not 5* rating. Prices on display clearly show "garden only" price as well as "garden/house" price but they will not sell you garden only when you get to the cashier. Garden is simply amazing, one of the world's best. Have been before but had more time to explore this time. Just a shame I had to walk all the way through every room in the house before I could get to the garden! Interior grottoes worth seeing however.

Incredible display of wealth, art and furniture - and delightful gardens.
This is the largest of the three Borromeo islands in Lake Maggiore. It has been home to the Borromeo family for a long time and it is full of precious treasures, from paintings to furniture to furnishings. The garden is beautifully kept and you have excellent views from the top terraces all up Lake Maggiore itself. For history, art, gardens and a wonderful day out, you can't beat these three islands: Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Madre. Highly recommended. An hour's train ride from Milan's Central Station to Stresa, then a short walk down to the lakeside and the boats. In high season it might be best to book ahead.

    A must
Probably the best thing Lago do Maggiore has to offer. I know the tickets are quite free costly but it is totally worth the cost. You can spend all day in the beautiful Borromeo palace or wonder through the shady gardens away from the hot sun. I would totally recommend visiting this place as it has so much to see.

Reserve more time for this island
We visited the 3 Borromean Islands and by far, this place is the prettiest and more interesting. It has a proper palace, with all the halls and apartments and a big collection of art. The gardens have many flowers, beautiful fountains and sculptures. Piscatori is the best place to have lunch, because it’s mainly restaurants and souvenir shops. Isola Madre has a more plain villa, with a botanical garden of exotic trees and plants, but for those os us who come from tropical countries, it’s not as interesting as Isola Bella.

The immense wealth on display here, still "preserved" by the same Borromeo family, and the steep entry fees (55 euros for a family of four in 2022) will make you wonder why they do not allow you to come and go as you please on a day ticket, nor eat a picnic in the enormous gardens. There is no effort to engage people with information, no disabled access, indeed no effort to make this a pleasant experience. The café is a hidden afterthought at the end of the visit and most day trippers will have brought lunch. Most people want to see the garden, not the house, but you are forced to wander around the dreary contents until you can escape into the garden, hungry and thirsty. You get a strong sense of being a trespasser who has paid for the privilege. I ask the Borromeo group to go and visit Chatsworth house in the UK and take note of how to do this properly. They are lucky enough to receive a captive (captured) audience from the ferry company, which is reasonably priced. Most people who visit are there because there is nothing else on the island except tacky gift shops and an ugly concrete promontory (another thing that really needs to be corrected and I can't believe they are allowed to leave it in such a sorry state). On the whole, a little disappointing despite the beautiful gardens and fascinating history.

Ferry

After reading reviews on TA regarding chaotic organisation with the private boat trips, we elected to stick with the scheduled public ferry. Apart from the odd delay, it was excellent and very good value. We bought a rover ticket for €46 each which gave us the ability to travel anywhere anytime for 1 day. This enabled us to do the 3 Barromean Islands which was a 7 hour day but well worth it.

Isola Belle

From Stresa, this is the first island on the schedule. The palace is worthwhile seeing but the gardens are unmissable! The care and attention that has gone into the planning and maintenance over many years is very obvious. The cafeteria is ok with a welcome coffee and fruit smoothie break!

It is an extraordinary palace but also ordinary in many ways as there is a desperation to fill the large expanse of internal space with little in the way of exquisite contents whether furnishings tapestries or paintings. You do not come away with an indelible memory of the interior. However it must be said the central staircase is grand and it falsely raises expectations for the remainder of the house. The somewhat circular salon,a later extension, adds some aesthetic value to the exterior facade
It is a major tourist attraction and is geared that way and apart from the exquisite gardens with their monuments and statues and parterre gardens every space is filled.
The gardens alone five star with such a location

Took a stroll from Stresa along the shoreline and reached Da Carciano. Not much there really though there is another ferry terminal. Used the public transport to Isola Bella and it cost €9.20 for 2 return tickets. The ferry takes a few minutes.

Lovely island with outstanding views though most of the island is hidden away behind the Palace which you have to pay to see. Tickets are €20 each and well worth it. You don't need a guided tour, the layout is great and you shouldn't go wrong travelling around the Palace building. At the end of the internal walk you come out onto the lovely gardens. There's no rush and you can just wander around taking in the sights and see the white peacocks. Even the cafe is very reasonably priced compared to Stresa itself.

A lovely venue and the sun was shining which made it the perfect day to visit.

Beautiful gardens, laid out very formally, quite spectacular, with white peacocks.
The palazzo, which you have to go round before you get to the garden is completely over the top, ostentatious wealth. There are varied rooms, with many pictures, furniture, sculpture etc, but the best thing are the magnificent views from the windows!
There are lots of shops, bars, cafes, etc to get past before you get to the entrance, which, like many sites we visited, is poorly signposted!

Isola Bella is too wonderful for words. What an unexpected gem. The ferry trip there from Stresa is lovely. The palace is remarkable, steeped in history and beauty. The terrazzo floors are spectacular, the high domed ceilings, hand painted walls, room after room filled with furniture, treasures and art, all perfectly preserved. The gardens are breathtaking. This is a must see and great for the whole family.

The main attraction on this island is the palace. This will definitely split opinion with everything done to excess- why have one painting when the entire wall can be covered by them.

There are some nice grounds as well but the overall admission fee felt a little steep particularly as you will pay another fee on the next island.

Bit of a nightmare really. Totally overcrowded when we arrived (at opening time on a Thursday in Sept). Let in far too many big groups which then blocked up the one way system through the palace at bottlenecks. No easy way to get past. Paid extra for audio guides which kept glitching so gave up. Gardens ok but frustrated that so many paths were blocked off for no obvious reason. Would have been much nicer to be able to wander freely. The ornate place would probably never really have been my thing, but I still would have enjoyed exploring with limited numbers and more freedom. As it was it was easily the worst stop on our 2 week holiday.
