About
Castle Ward will take you on a journey of discovery. The 18th-century eccentric house with two distinctly different styles, classical and Gothic, will entice you to explore further. This truly beautiful 332-hectare (820-acre) walled demesne, with walking trails, exotic garden, stunning vistas and picturesque farmyard, will unlock your imagination through family history, leisure pursuits, events and industrial heritage. A children's pastimes centre and laundry room are a short walk from the house in the stableyard, alongside a gift shop, second-hand bookshop and tea-room.

We worth a visit and plenty to learn!
Brilliant spot for a relaxing walk and plenty to do in the area. We went for a walk and to visit the house. Castle Ward was open and we got to see the rooms which are a piece of living history. The gentleman at the main doors was very informative and clearly devoted to the house and his job - told me all about the house (ask about the plastering on the walls - great story!) and greeted guests one by one as they came in. Lovely atmosphere and very warm staff.

    Lovely place to visit.
Lovely place to visit. The house is quite stunning with it's different frontages. Downstairs rooms are quite amazing. The only downside we had was there wasn't enough staff to open the upstairs :-( The stable coffeeshop is well worth a visit as well as around the whole stable complex. When going around the grounds make sure you visit the areas that were used for filming Game of Thrones.

    Stunning views & fantastic staff
Had a wonderful visit which was made all the better by the amazing team of staff. The house has some really unique architecture and items of furniture. The house guides were all very friendly and shared really interesting background and stories that added so much more to the experience. There are several trails at the property and the 2 that I had time to do were great. The pathways were well maintained and had some great views all the way round. Would highly recommend visiting if you are in the area.

Wrong information on website
Checked the website as visiting on a stormy Friday in October. “Cafe and house open” ( I took a screen shot but trip advisor doesn’t seem to allow me to upload it).
We arrived. Greeted at gate by two people who scanned both our cards, asked if we had visited before- we answered “No” and were given a map and were not told any restrictions for the day.
Signs from carpark poor to the house. Cafe closed and looked awful as surrounded by rickety wire fencing. Toilets the worse NT one’s ever seen- smelt bad , one out of order, looked like no one had cleaned there for weeks.
Got to house which was quite a long way on such a rainy day and vaguely noticed some sort of temporary sign set away from main door but had to hold on to my hood and my hair was flying everywhere. It wasn’t the day to stand and read a sign out in the rain and wind. Headed forward as could see people in hallway behind a closed door. Man peered back at us, then eventually managed to open the locked door a little and was quite abrupt informing me I had just walked past a sign explaining only guided tours available and he continued in this vane humiliating me in front of the people in the hall. It was blowing a gale, raining and I pointed this out and that the staff at the gate had not told us the house was not open which contradicted the website.
Someone behind him said we could come in and he reluctant repeated this but as I was humiliated and embarrassed I declined as I said we felt very unwelcome.
We went back to the car, drove down to the lough then left.
If I had paid for that visit I would have asked for a refund. As an annual member I am very disappointed. This place needs a serious management shake up!

Was very disappointed in this place. When we got to the house, not a castle they only had the ground floor open. Honestly we were around the place in 5 mins. I have been to many stately homes and this is a very poor cousin. The grounds where nice with plenty of walks and beautiful views. The cafe was abysmal not much going on there either. All in all I will not be going back.

I visit Castle Ward every so often for a long walk and pop in to the cafe and bookshop when I get a chance. It’s a great place for a walk for all ages.

Beautiful estate, lovely to cycle and walk in, can’t fault the grounds or it’s upkeep.

However at £10 per person I do feel somewhat aggrieved. I think the fairer pricing structure would be Maby £10 for car parking (to help with upkeep of the grounds, and then a fee per person for entry into the house itself, not everyone will visit the house but we all have to pay for it.

Called in on Saturday at 3.50pm. The attendant on the gate told us the main house was closing at 4.00pm with all the other facilities closing by 5.00pm. He still charged us full price £12 per adult. It is a beautiful place and I understand the national trust needs to be funded but £24 for talking a walk is rather expensive. It would be more appreciated if they reduced their fees in the afternoon when you are not able to make use of all the facilities.

This review is for the 'Winterfell' visit - not for Castle Ward visit per se, (which deserves positive reviews), and I think has been confused.
As G O T fans, we found the Winterfell experience to be lifeless and no activity whatsoever related to G O T. There are external agency tours, and the one we saw looked naff.
The winterfell courtyard was all looked up and with a huge 3-linked wigwam tent in the centre... great...Not!
If you visit for interest in Castle Ward for the house and grounds etc, that is beautiful and interesting - and, as I say, requires a different review - and gets a healthy 4 stars.
Would not recommend to G O T fans - go to Belfast and north Antrim, for a much better experience.

Went to Ward Castle/Winterfell castle. Ward Castle was closed and the ‘Winterfell’ castle was totally underwhelming, just a square tower really that actually didn’t look at all much like the Winterfell castle. You need a good imagination😕

We choose to spend a truly lovely afternoon here, enjoying the grounds and trails. It truly is a special NT location. The setting is stunning, and as it’s a fair drive from the city, it’s less busy than mount Stewart.

However, I must protest at the price of the ice cream - £3.20 for a single scoop of vanilla!?

Pure greed
