Went there right away from airport to the mountain by car with local driver at 2am. The way up there was dangerous and dark, that's why we need a local. I never see the star that brighten and obvious like that before. The driver know best to play a good music a long the way. That's the moment for me.... More

Absolutely beautiful. Would recommend going to the view point for sunrise. It's pretty chilly and we are used to the cold so do bring warm clothes. After the sunrise we got a jeep to the bottom of the volcano and hiked up. Not a hard hike, only took 25-30 minutes. Quite dusty though so maybe bring a scarf to cover... More

After the sunrise, we went by Jeep to base of Mount Bromo, then you either take horses or hike to the stairs that go up to crater rim. When are at the top, will hear roaring sound, with ground vibrating from the steam eruptions. I found it worth the time and effort, but be warned it was very crowded at... More

We have to rent a hardtop in order to go to the National park. The view from the viewpoint is amazing. Since we go during the holiday, it was very crowded but the view was worth it. I hope that the government of Indonesia would put more effort in preserving the park and make a strong enforcement on the cleanliness... More

We visited on a National Holiday so probably busier than other times. We arrived by the standard Toyota jeep and were immediately met by one of the horsemen offering a ride to the steps for IDR100. Politely declined and walked there which took about 15 minutes. There was no queue for the stairs, but you need to be patient as... More

We stayed Probolinggo and took a shared car leaving at 2:30am. We arrived at 4:00 at the base of the hill and hiked for an hour up to the King Kong viewpoint. It's very easy to follow on google maps. Many tourists take the jeeps up to these points which seems a great way to ruin the experience. After hiking... More

The view is 5/5, but the conditions to access it are worth a 0 hence the medium score. Cemoro Lawang is simply the worst town (more of a village, actually) we've been to in Indonesia. Forget the usual smiles and friendliness of the locals, here they just see you as walking money bags, trying to rip you off at every... More

Need to prepare transport with 4x4 It takes about 2 hours to reach the Jemplang junction (you will pay entrance fee about half way up the mountain - Rp 215.000 for foreigners for one day). when driving up the mountain you'll pass the Air Terjun Coban Pelangi (beautiful large Waterfall) Once reaching the top of the mountain at the Jemplan... It was easy to go to mount bromo because many tours offered complete packages with reasonable price (including transport, meal, entrance tickets). It was cheaper for a group of 6. Infant free. We were 7 adults, 3 children and 1 infant ^^. We decided not to take the tour but drove there by ourself. It took around 3.5 hours to... More

Hi I like to share with you my experience in Mt Bromo & Ijen Crater recently.

I have learned that the most common complaints from tourists who opted for group tours or cheap tours are as follows:

a) Guide does not speak good english. Often there were communication break downs;

b) Changes of guide everyday. There was no bond established between each new guide and the tourists making the tour rather plain and commercial in nature;

c) Half way in the journey there was a change of transportation vehicle with different guides thus making each tourist feeling unsecured and worried of their safety and security when being guided by unknown personnel;

d) vehicle used was a van packed with a number of tourists. Sometimes it has no air-condition and tourists suffered with heat and dehydration during the long journey ride;

e) new tourists are mixed with other tourists who were rude and inconsiderate and sometimes cause argument among them. The worst report received was some tourists were sexually assaulted by others in a group tour;

f) inexperienced guide who does not know the way to these volcanoes and got lost in the way making a simple 4-5 hour ride became a 12 hour frustrated ride on the road searching for the booked hotel or the foot of the volcanoes;

g) tourists were forced to stay at a cheap and lopsided guesthouse in very dirty dormitory shared by other smelly and snoring inconsiderate tourists;

h) tourists have no freedom of movement. The decision of where or which spot to explore a volcano or how long to explore a certain area in a volcano are usually dictated by the guide who favors a certain individual than other members of the group causing uneasiness of other members;

i) usually the most common complaint is safety. Often in a group tour, there would not be a "one to one" assistance from a guide to a tourist. No assistance were given to a weak couple tourists who were slow or lacked behind or have difficulty in climbing certain steep hills or craters. Those who were slow were always left behind and were asked to wait at a spot for the group to return during the tour.

There are many more I can share with you but it would not be fair to generalize these bad experiences in all group tours in Java but group tours that offer cheap and below market tour prices should raise a red flag with suspicion.

Please be careful. There are always reasons why some tourists opted for more expensive with better and more comfortable tours as safety and security in volcano tours are something not to be taken lightly especially in Indonesia.

So we decided to hire "World Heritage Network" for their guide and transport services and it was a blessing to avoid all the above. If you are thinking of trekking these volcanoes, always get a reputable company and go for the best. Hire these guys from World Heritage Network!
