Fabulous, peaceful hour at the salt lake
Aug 2021 • Family
What an amazing place ! Huge salt lake that makes you feel like it’s just you in the world. We saw a flamingo in the distance and if you walk on the Sandy part it gets very muddy but walk round it on the beach side and there are some paths you can walk on to the middle - it’s an amazing place to spend an hour. We were walking back to Marmari from Tigaki down the beach and it was a fascinating minor detour - would highly recommend.
Keeping the Hamam on your left just walk down the road.

Nice try

A lot of expectations…
All around there was houses ruins and a poor vegetation, if there was flamingos, I’m sure, everything would changed!
Nice try! 😃

Nice ride
Aug 2021
Cycled from hotel to lake. Nice trip. If one does not know the purpose of a salt lake you would not find it much. Better do some reading about it before you go there. Saltwinning

Interesting place to visit
Oct 2020 • Couples
Saturday 3rd October and we visited the Town of Tigaki, on the northern coast of the Island, where this vast Lake, Alekis, is located on the outskirts of the town. It is sandwiched between the 2 towns of Tigaki and Marmari.

The Lake was used in the production of salt until 1989. There were some old buildings, around the sides of the Lake, that were obviously used in the salt production. As we walked along one side of the Lake the old weight bridge was still there.

There was a large swathe of the lake that had no water, it had dried up and we were able to walk across it, we could feel the salt crunch under our feet. The rotting remains of the wooden salt beds were also visible. At one point we did stop walking any further as the sand was starting to get wet, slimy and a bit boggy.

It is a predominantly fresh water lake. The part of the Lake with water, in the distance, was in the direction of Marmari. This is where the birds and wildlife were, at one stage something disturbed them and a massive flock took to the sky, impressive sight.

There was no way we were going to get anywhere close, on foot, to see the birds. The Lake is home to migratory birds including pelicans and flamingos.

In an attempt to get close to see the birds, a few days later we drove to the town of Marmari, which is situated at the opposite side of the Lake from Tigaki. We tried to make our way to the Lake from the town, but with no success.

Although we did not get up close to see the birds it was an experience to visit here.

Hired a bike and took a ride around the lake. Not easy at times but fun and beautiful and definitely worth it.

beautiful place at sunset
Jul 2020
was resting in Tigaki for over a week. However, the day before my departure, I decided to see this salt lake. Interesting place, although the water evaporates and the smell is moderately pleasant. However the sunset from this place was beautiful

Pure beautiful nature
Oct 2019 • Family
Surprisingly in this small island, there is a magical salt lake which attracts many birds and especially beautiful flamingos.
Keep n mind that the road sometimes is a little bit “off-road” for small cars..
