Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Small shop full of all things Scottish. Good selection of cards for any occasion with Doric or scots language used. Also quirky Scottish gifts, books and DVDs.

It is not an understatement to say that discovering this gem (and gem it most certainly is) probably made our holiday. The minute you step inside you immediately become aware as to why Mither Tongue has the recommendation of the Scottish Tourist Board.
Being from Northern Ireland with both our maternal and paternal families having ancestral links to Scotland, the interest in the Scots language and the heritage and literature of this great and beautiful nation which has given so much to the world is already there. What we found in Mither Tongue is a treasure chest full of tasteful jewellery, crafts, stationery and cards. There is a wide range of books on the poetry of a Burns (obviously) as well as other texts which showcase the efforts of Maggie and her movement to promote and preserve the Scots language. Folk who are really interested in this type of work could spend half a day in here (we probably did). Also of interest is the free information which any visitor can take with them. It is plentiful and substantive in content. You can also take the opportunity to sign up to receive future bulletins on the work of the centre. The staff are extremely passionate, knowledgable warm and welcoming. Being a former teacher who taught the poetry of Burns to her a English literature students, here was an Aladdin's cave of information and resources for any classroom practitioner. (Note: you do not always have to go to Ayr to get the good stuff lol).
So a note to all who may be travelling to Scotland this summer from Our Wee Country: do yourselves a favour and put Keith into the SatNav and go and visit Mither Tongue. It is in what I would say was Keith's Main Street but does have its own Scottish Heritage sign as well.
But if like me you might have to wait again to next year before sampling the pleasures of Mither Tongue I am told there is a website which is a work in progress. I can hardly wait!
Please do try and visit. This is a quality establishment, with quality, tasteful merchandise and lovely people.

I'm sorry to the owners of the Mither Tongue but,
the shop is nice, clean warm and friendly but there is a limited number of items for sale.
The shop is a collection of books, to dip into not read. and what is basically odds and ends of tourist keepsakes.
How the shop makes a living did amaze me and maybe I am missing something that others may see. Stones you could collect from the beach with a name painted on them, bits of tartan here and there and ephemera that will be discarded within days.
There must be a need for it as the shop has been there for quite a while but, as I said at the beginning, sorry to the owners, I could not see the attraction or stock worth spending money on.
See for yourselves if you are passing, I hope I am missing something as the welcome was warm, it was just the interest that was lacking.

Many thanks for your review.
We’re disappointed to learn that we fell short of expectations, and agree with your assumption that you must have missed something – you did - quite a lot, actually!
Our experience is that many customers who stop to chat, whether local or visiting, appreciate our unique products, our own verses, and increasingly, our contribution to the celebration and promotion of the Scots language.
We do our best to make the experience interesting, informative and enjoyable, displaying quotes and poetry excepts from Robert Burns, a brief illustrated language history around the walls and a similar audio-visual in the window, the latter provided by Education Scotland. There is also a small Scots language area offering free information, and on our window boards, we promote the success of our home town as first winner of the Scots Toun award – a prestigious government accolade presented to communities who celebrate and promote their linguistic culture.
The pebbles you refer to were indeed gathered from a beautiful Scottish beach, the majority of which display much-loved Scots words (rather than names), many now having found new homes overseas as natural souvenirs of Scotland.
It perhaps also went unnoticed that we have been a Scottish Countryside Alliance Awards finalist, are commended by the Scots Language Centre and have achieved four-star grading from VisitScotland.
We could go on . . ! but instead hasten to re-assure you, and others contemplating a visit, that we strive constantly to develop our ranges and listen carefully to visitors’ feedback in our efforts to enhance the Mither Tongue experience.
