About
The Whisky Castle has been selling the finest malt whiskies of Scotland from its premises in the quaint village of Tomintoul for over 100 years. It is located at the gateway to Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail. Tomintoul is the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland and The Whisky Castle is the highest whisky shop in the UK. Your hosts Sam and Scott, along with their team Maureen, Kirstin and Lauren would be delighted to welcome you to sample some of the finest Scottish malts and gins Scotland has to offer. We have over 500 malt whiskies with many being single cask, independently bottled and from small batches. We provide a unique tasting experience from a fantastic selection of products allowing us to match a malt to your palette and budget. Our single malts are personally selected by us with many being non-chill filtered so you are assured of some of the most unique drams from across Scotland including limited and rare collectables. We also stock some whiskies from distilleries that have closed and also those that have been demolished and lost forever! We also offer lager, beers, wine, champagne, vodka, gin, port, brandy, sherry and many Scottish liqueurs. There is an extensive gift shop and 18 seater café in our Highland Market serving hot food all day. We offer a full range of Scottish gifts, toys, unique jewellery and country clothing to suit all tastes. When you get the chance to visit us you will be given a traditional warm Scottish welcome and if you are looking for something extra special that we don't have in stock we offer a sourcing service and we can have your item shipped direct to your door. All of our products can be bought online. We love reaching out and spreading the word about the fabulous Malt Whiskies of Scotland in their natural state where there is no added caramel for colouring and whiskies have not been chill-filtered for clarity and/or diminished in flavour for consistency.

    Knowledgeable staff, great whiskies
Knowledgeable staff and a really good selection of whiskies at reasonable prices. Had a mini tasting session before settling on a Tomintoul 16 year old and a 2008 Dalmore single cask by Gordon & Macphail. All this situated in the stunning scenery of the Cairngorms. What's not to like 😀👍

    A Must-Visit
This is an Aladdin's Cave for Whisky lovers. It has a huge range of unique and unusual whiskies and other liquors. And the staff take time to help you choose. They talk to you about your likes and dislikes and allow you taste some of them as well. The member of staff on duty was very patient took a lot of time with my son, who has autism, explaining about various drinks my son was interested in and allowed him taste them before my son made a couple of purchases. Equally this same gentleman spent a lot of time with my husband explaining the nuances between various whiskies and there wasn't any pressure to purchase nor was there any pressure to purchase something expensive. But in the end, my husband bought something that suited him. Its a lovely shop and we mapped out a day tour route so that we could visit this shop, having been there before and loved it. Next time we are in the highlands it will be on our "must see" list again.

    Fabulous!
What a place! 1000 bottles in the room, we were told by the very helpful assistant. We were offered, and accepted, a tasting of two Tomintoul whiskies. Both lovely, would have been happy with either but chose a 12yr old. There’s a tearoom attached, but we left that for another time. Great place. Go there if whisky’s your thing.

    Friendly service!
We were disappointed to find out that we couldn't get a tour at Tomintoul distillery, but when we went into town we found Whiskey Castle and Highland Market, where they were offering tastings of Tomintoul whiskey. I told the owner that I wasn't a whiskey drinker, but had found a few that I had liked. He went out of his way to find a few for me to taste that were to my liking. Even though he knew I wasn't likely to buy, he was determined to find one that pleased me. He sampled the Tomintoul to my husband. He was so personable and we really enjoyed our time chatting with him.

Tomintoul Whisky Castle for the WIN!
Scott is such a generous host. We've spent the past 30 years traveling Ireland and always had a great experience when we went to the furthest reaches of that country. The thought being that we'd get a more authentic experience. We used the same strategy with Tomintoul, Scotland. It's far enough away from the big cities that you get to meet people on their own terms. The Whisky Castle delivered and then some. Such a great experience. There was a large group doing a led tasting when I arrived. I had been in the day before with my father. Scott gave us a very warm Scottish welcome then and invited us back for a tasting around 4pm any day dueing the week. So when I arrived a couple of days later and didn't see him in the shop I was a bit bummed. I was about to try to jump in on the in progress tour when Scott walked in. Recognizing me immediately, he asked, "Have you had a taste yet?" When I said no, he asked if I wanted a coffee or tea. He served me in the cafe and said when the group was gone, he'd get me in on a tasting. When the group left, he spent about an hour with me, exchanging stories and sharing some of his favorite whiskies with me. The shop is well outfitted. Loads of interesting bottles and a well stocked single barrel program with at least 4 different bottles and soon to be 8 hand selected barrels by himself that are exclusive to the Whisky Castle. I left with more bottles than I expected. Apparently, you can bring 5.5 liters back to the USA. So, here we go. I bought the following; 16yr old Tomintoul Speyside, A Secret Taste of Orkney 1 of 319 - Whisky Castle exclusive, Gordan & McPhail, Speyburn Distillery, 1 of 199, Whisky Castle exclusive. Left the Sherry Finished bottle for the next time, plus, he ships to the USA!!. If you are in the Highlands, go see Scott and the lovely people at the Whisky Castle! Such good humans.

Decent selection of many well-known scotch, single malts but almost all of them are too expensive; around 20% more than usual retail prices.

Picked up a bottle of whisky and, not wearing my glasses the manager put me right in a very polite manner.
Unfortunately the other person working there was quite derogatory in his loud remarks, which I didn't appreciate and not how I would expect a customer to be treated.
Bit of a shame as when I've been here previously the people have always been polite and friendly - afraid I won't be back.

I felt robbed!!! Went into to the shop to buy two ice creams...I purchased two birthday cards then also two shortbread fingers to take away.....£17.20...I thought the lass was joking!!

Shortbread..£2.50 each... same price as eat in with service...£5.00

Ice Creams...3.50..... about two third of the quantity arced in Ballater...£5.00

Two birthday cards...£2.60 each...£5.20

I was so shocked I actually paid it. £17.50.

I've told everyone and people are appalled.

None of it even tasted anything special.

Advice.... steer clear... certainly not worth a visit. I was appalled to think tourists were being so ripped off.

Dear Marilyn R Very disappointed you did not enjoy your experience visiting us. We like to think we do our best to keep our prices as competitive as possible for our customers and don’t feel we are over pricing our items, indeed, we get regular comments from customers on how reasonable we are. Our ice cream prices are all listed alongside the ice cream options on a large blackboard at the serving counter, and one would assume you looked at this before ordering. Similarly, all our gifts are clearly price marked, and the prices would have been obvious before you made the decision to buy, so it is difficult to imagine that you were so “shocked” at the prices that you couldn’t even speak to explain that you would rather not pay for your items. Not sure what establishments your are comparing us with, that left you feeling the need to give us such a clearly spiteful review. Using the terms “robbed” and “ripped off” are very inflammatory. Not sure who the “everyone” you refer to are, but doubt that many people would find your views on the prices you paid for items in a gift shop an appalling state of affairs! Please do come back in anytime that suits you Marilyn for a full refund, as we would hate to think that such a shocking experience has left you shaken. Hopefully £17.50 back in your pocket will help ease your upset
