What people are saying
Very interesting museum-castle but badly managed

First disappointment, parking. For somebody who is not from the area (us), we presumed that the parking below the castle was connected with the castle museum but not, so we kept driving in circles to look for a parking spot (the road to the castle is difficult to access if coming from Baia (driving southbound) because of the narrow turn, if coming from Bacoli/Miseno (northbound) need to pay extra attention to take that uphill road because there are no signs of the castle museum access road). When driving we called the museum to ask but nobody answered the phone (working hours). At the end after three circles we managed to recognized that uphill road, arrived and they told us to park in one of those 5 narrowed parking spots (test drive skills!) but what happens if there are more than 5 cars? Plenty of carpark inside after the ticket gate but not for the public. Second disappointment, only cash. How can such an important museum don't accept cards? There is no ATM machine in the close surroundings. Third disappointment, exhibitions. We came here purposely to see the original underwater marble statues from the nymphaeum of Baiae (Emperor Claudius nymphaeum) after that marvellous semi-submarine tour :( we were told, that room has been closed for years! The positives are the exhibition pieces. Appreciated a lot that topographic model of the whole Phlegraean Fields, gave a good idea of how the towns were sited in Ancient Rome times comparing today can realize how those nature forces (volcano eruptions and earthquakes) shaped the area throughout the centuries. Lots of interesting pieces from ancient Greek town of Cumae; so many busts and pieces of artifacts with the names of the streets where found like the bust of Commodus which was found in the surroundings where was located the circus agonalis aka chariot-racing stadium of Pozzuoli (ancient Puteoli). The castle itself was not bad but it was not that good, there was a lot of working equipment everywhere. Pity because the castle is an important and historic monument of the area; it is believed that Julius Caesar had his villa there (according to Tacitus) then the Aragons built it, never lossing its military strategic use. In a few words: 1. come early and cross fingers that there is carpark available; 2. bring enough cash; 3. they close at 13:00 so only morning visits; 4. if interested to see the nymphaeum marble statues (and the exhibition room is still closed) can search it on youtube through a famous Italian science and history documentarian...

Everything is amazing from the exceptional panorama you can enjoy to the multitude of artifacts which date back to the pre.greek era of the area. Only negative comment: the museum hosts a wonderful equestrian bronze statue (similar to the one of Marcus Aurelius in Rome) but the room where it is kept is closed for renovation, apparently since many years!!! Why is it si difficult to renovate a room?? And if it so why don’t move the statue to another room, there’s plenty of space!!!

The Greeks utilized this site as did the Romans, as did the Aragonese who constructed this undaunted fortress. You pass through Caesar's garden across a drawbridge, all the way up to the battlements, all the time being treated to spectacular views of the ancient and current sites of Inhabitation on the bay. There is a spectacular museum housing a vast collection including relics of Greek Cumae, which I will review separately. Push yourself and go all the way to the roof. Take photos that will echo for a lifetime.

Went here to see the museum artifacts before a trip to Cuma, where a lot of them were found. They are well laid out and most described in English and Italian. You park just below the castle for €3(don't expect a receipt) steep walk into castle, and access to castle limited, but very good views from very large roof terrace.
As an asthmatic,I did not appreciate the receptionist smoking a cigar in the room, but he did put it out when I mentioned and apologised.
Suggest buying a combined ticket for Cuma,Aragonese castle,Pozzuoli Amphitheatre and BAIA Thermal baths.,only costs €8 and fantastic value. You need a car to visit them all,or an expensive taxi.
There is a self service drinks, food room,no cafe etc.More than one set of v clean toilets!

Not well sign-posted but worth the search. Lots of stuff to look at and lovely views of the sea. Be prepared to walk a LONG way just to get to the entrance!

We found these premises closed at a time when they were supposed to be open. Our guide made inquiries in the area and heard that they are prone to close at any time without warning. this was sad because I was looking forward to see the castle

Ok, where do I start?
The location is simply otherworldly. The views from the Castle are spectacular, even more so if you happen to visit it on a sunny day.
The museum is interesting but what is REALLY SHAMEFUL is that the most beautiful rooms with the most spectacular displays, e.g. the Ninfeo di Punta Epitaffio and the Sacello degli Augustali (google them) are closed because apparently they are understaffed... What is really sad is that this could be one of the most interesting attraction sites in the whole area...

We visited this castle on a Sunday to be told all museums are free on the first Sunday in every month which was a pleasant surprise. It was a very hot day and the views were lovely, especially Caesar's Summer Palace which was fascinating. The museum inside the castle was very interesting too. However, be aware like most places the castle will close for siesta,so plan around this.

Considering the entrance fee is 3€ a person and an extra 3€ for parking on the castle grounds, I can't claim this place is good value for money.

It's alright to visit this place if you I happen to be in the vicinity anyhow but it's most definitely not worth an extra trip out here.

The museum on the inside has lots of archeological findings but not that are particularly outstanding.

The castle rooftop offers a quiet place with a great view over Naples, Bacoli and its surroundings.

An imposing and magnificent castle that has never been conquered. It is located in Baia (Bacoli), north of Naples, and his rooms are collected collections and archaeological finds from all over the area Flegrei, from Cuma (ancient city whose excavations are on par with those of Pompei and a must visit) and the archaeological site of the Baia (also they must visit), from Pozzuoli whose visit Rione Terra and the cathedral built in an ancient temple. From its terraces you can enjoy the breathtaking views. Do not forget to bring your bathing suit because after your visit you can dive into the sea from the adjoining beach below the castle. What else do you want ?
