The 17th century Villa Reale di Marlia lies in the heart of Tuscany, near Lucca, in an exceptional location at the foot of the Pizzorne hills. Home in the 19th century to Napoleon's sister and Duchess of Lucca Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, the Villa is encircled by high walls, seemingly protecting it from the passing of time. Villa Reale is considered to be one of the most important historical properties in Italy. The 16-hectare estate includes numerous refined gardens and botanic rarities, as well as majestic buildings created over centuries. The Park features a splendid Water Theatre, the world famous Green Theatre (where the composer Paganini often performed for Elisa Baciocchi), pathways lined with Camellia flowers, and is enriched by a Lemon Garden with a group of marble statues depicting Leda and the Swan, and a Spanish Garden in Art Deco style. Several historic buildings add to the experience, including the 16th century Villa del Vescovo with its nymphaeum, named the Grotto of Pan, and the elegant 18th century Palazzina dell'Orologio with its panoramic loggia.

Beautiful garden

Relaxing walk in a beautiful garden. We went with our 2 year old daughter. Note that the villa is currently closed for renovations.

No building to go into, but the grounds are expansive and there are some great surprises worth seeing. Consider it a park with gardens and a bit of history and you will enjoy it. We had a guide to provide history which made it that much better.

Definitely worth a visit. If you are looking for something special and with a unique ambiance, that's a place! The whole area of the park is huge, so don't expect to be done in 20 minutes, but rather enjoy the time while there. The area has many special nooks, not only the main villa and the clock house, but my... More

Thank you very much Megggie! We are delighted you enjoyed the park and thanks also for the advice: next time you'll come, you'll have the chance to relax on the restored benches that are in lab right now before or after visiting the interiors of the Villa! Looking forward to seeing you! More

A phenomenal amount of money is being spent on the Villa and grounds, gangs of workmen are likely a permanent feature. So is it worth a visit? Yes, if you want to see the grounds and buildings as they are restored. Sadly you can't go inside any of the buildings - and we would have loved to see the 16thC... More

Thank you Clive for your review! We are happy that you mentioned the “non-operating Grotto”. We are currently investigating and repairing some of the ancient water ways leading to the Grotto and we hope it will be working again soon! Also, we are projecting a new coffee shop as well as repairing century old benches around the park. "Change is... More

And quite extraordinarily quiet and empty on a sunny Monday in August. Beautiful grounds tumble round, and the buildings are fascinating - though cannot be entered. Curious grottos, waterfalls, and so on

Don't expect any fancy frills - no facilities, gift shop etc but on the plus side we virtually had the place to ourselves! It's 16 hectares of landscaped gardens with wonderful vistas and hidden surprises. There are several buildings such as The Bishops Villa, Clock House, Pans grotto and of course the Villa Reale itself which adds interest and life... More

A whole range of different garden "rooms" - it's delightful to go through a gap in the hedges and find yourself in a completely different style of garden. When we visited we were the only ones there which added to their charm and sense of magic!

I had no idea what to expect. Was pleasantly surprised with all the different gardens and the history of the estate. I did not know Napolean's sister was governor of Tuscany. What a stunning venue to attend a concert. Or anything else.
