Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a free site to visit so you can’t complain. Up a dirt track which his tough non small cars. Then a ten minute walk. Not good for mobility impaired people. The site itself is scenic and fun. You need good imagination to think how it may have looked.

Great view of the castle approaching from the local roads. Fantastic visit to a 15th Century ruined castle. Short walk from the car park with some splendid panoramic views of the beautiful countryside.
A simple but amazing historical dwelling.

Had a thoroughly enjoyable visit to Auchindoun with our kids. The ruins are great for them to run around in and the views around about are a sight to behold themselves. Wee walk up from the car park and you’re there in no time.

Great castle perched on a mound, ruined but in a cool way with fantastic views as you walk up to it. Can park quite close in a small car park after driving up a very stony road. Well worth a visit!

Auchindoun Castle is maintained by Historic Scotland. I liked walking around this castle. It is quite high up and was very windy when I was there. It doesn't have the same amount of plaques giving information about it which was a bit disappointing. However the highlight is the countryside views from this location which are superb.

There is no fee to get into this Castle as it is basically a ruin.

Location: From Dufftown take the A941 for about 2.5 miles. There is a long gravel road up to a small car park located on the right from where you must walk up to the Castle. It is a pleasant walk.

Other information: We tied it in with visits to nearby Balvenie Castle, Dufftown Railway, The Giants Cradle, Dufftown Fairy Village and Linn Falls, Aberlour.

The walk up to the Castle from the bottom of the track is inclined but do-able. There is a small car park halfway. The scenery is superb and there is real feel or remoteness.

...yet we decided to have an adventure and go see Auchindoun Castle. After all, if we were put off by the weather, we'd never get out and do anything!

We parked up on the main road, which has a small signpost for the castle. We didn't realise until it was too late, that there is a dedicated car park for the castle just up the track. That would have saved us a short uphill walk, where we fought against the gales and prayed the trees would remain rooted. Still, even with parking at the main road, the walk to the castle was probably less than 15 minutes. The view on approach was dramatic - it was even more amazing than we'd hoped.

The castle ruin itself is just a shell. It only takes a few minutes to explore it all. It's a beautiful place for photographs (mine, unfortunately, were all blurry due to the winds). There is no admission fee or opening hours - you just go anytime and enjoy it. Most lovely of all is the setting - perched on high ground with views over wild heathery hills. It would look amazing in August/September when the heather is in bloom turning the hills purple. We will return!

Visited Auchindoun specifically to take photographs. Situated on the top of a hill surrounded by moors, heather, trees and grazing sheep, it was breathtaking. After a 10min (max) walk from the carpark, we had the place to ourselves and with the wind weaving through the ruins it was an erie place at times but well worth the visit.

First off: the castle is not in the village auchindoun. Best use your gps to get there.
Car park is available. 5 minutes' walk to the ruin. Very peaceful surroundings with many sheep. Interesting ruin with 2 signs explaining its history. Best of all: free!

This castle is about 2 to 3 miles south on the A941 out of Dufftown, if you keep on the A941 the you will come across the sign for it, when you turn off the road at the sign the road up is a stone track but just take it slow and the car will go up no problem, the parking for the castle is at the bottom of the hill, it is a small car park maybe 10 cars or a little more, we were there early so it was not busy, you then walk up the track and when you are about half way up you will see the castle on the left hand side on top of a hill, the walk up to the castle is all up hill and takes about 10 minutes from the car park, it is a wee bit steep but nothing major and most people should not have an issue. The castle is free of charge and it is good to see and wander round, the views from the top of the hill are very nice, if you are in the region go and have a look you will not be disappointed
