Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

After the Christmas Day festivities it’s decided to take the canal wander to Bingley to revisit the locks.
Easy walk along the canal bank mostly in good condition we took about 40 minutes walk and back
There is a cafe at the 5 rise top lock but Boxing Day it wasn’t open.
Overhaul a nice wander with a bit of wildlife to boot

We had a thoroughly enjoyable visit to this marvel of historic engineering. Watching the canal boats being lifted is impressive; all done by hand. There is a short walk to three rise locks and a cafe at the top of the main rise by the canal. Well worth a vist and we parked in Beck Lane a short walk away.

I am proud to say that the 5 Rise Locks are on my doorstep so visiting them is a regular thing for me. Recently featured on Celebrities go Barging there is no doubt that the people who designed and built these locks knew what they were doing. If you are ever fortunate enough to visit Yorkshire and find yourself in the vicinity of Bingley make sure you take a look. They really are something else.

A failed visit for something I had specifically picked this area for
Have usually stayed in skipton and visited Grassington and that area.
On Tuesday I had planned to spend some time on the canal 5 and 3 locks , but I never actually found them. I saw 1 sign saying follow this road sign for the 5 locks but never saw another one so after trolling round the area and not finding it I came home. I won’t be returning. It was very disappointing as I have seen lots of programs about this feat of engineering and I love to visit canals when I am away and the ones locally (Barnsley and Rotherham) I would advise anyone who does decide to visit to research how to get there better than I did

Incredibly helpful lock keepers assisting with our situation due to high winds. Thank you to Miles and John the following day for making our first experience of the locks very enjoyable. We learnt a lot of interesting facts from you all.

We took a walk from Bingley station to the canal. It’s easy to find well signposted. We walked to the three rise locks then onto the five rise. A very interesting feat of engineering with information boards to explain the history.
We enjoyed our visit and took in the lovely surroundings and authentic buildings that are well preserved.

There are two flights of locks in Bingley. There is a three lock flight on the edge of the town centre, near the railway station. A short walk up the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is the five lock flight.
If you are interested in history you may enjoy checking this impressive engineering marvel.

At present the 5 rise locks are undergoing major repairs, but you can see down from the top. The volunteers told us the work should be finished in about three weeks. There has been a lot of structural damage and erosion. Look forward to seeing the finished result. The café is great and you can still visit the 3 rise ones.

Superbly and sympathetically restored staircase of canal locks with a wide canal and easy walks along the towpath. The tree lined canal curves away on the Bingley side and plenty of signs of good maintenance. Plenty of wildlife along the way with mallard predominating. The lock keepers office has details for those wishing to ascend or descend. The canalside cafe has plenty of outside seating. Children need to be watched carefully for obvious reasons.

Incredible piece of late 1700s engineering. I have no idea how long it takes for a vessel to pass thru the Five locks, 2 hours maybe?
Anyway a beautiful sight and lovely walks up the canal to Salt Mill.

Hi want to visit ,, we’re in a large motorhome , is there any overnight motorhome parking ?
Written 22 September 2022
There is parking on the roads nearby and car parks in Bingley centre (not far away) but unknown if you can stay overnight.
Written 25 September 2022
I cant walk very far. Is there somewhre to park for maybe 30 mins
Written 16 July 2020
There are places to park, predominantly in urban areas, very close to the locks so you shouldn’t have any problem. Please be mindful of the residents needs for access to their properties.

Hi can you see and get to the locks without going uphill on foot. Ok on the flat but cannot do hills. Thank you
Written 28 April 2019
Entry to the top lock is via Beck Lane but parking is tricky but it is then level walking.

Yes up Park Road for approx 400 yards. Climb the hill and turn left at the crossroads on Beck Lane , carry on to a mini roundabout and park somewhere there. The locks is down a short road for about 50 yards

Hi does anyone know where you can catch a boat to go on the Five Rise locks? I can find boats to hire for holidays bit I'm just after a short boat trip to take the kids on the locks. Thank you
Written 27 May 2017
I don't know a local company to hire a narrow boat and to my knowledge they are not like a short trip in this particular area but like for a holiday where you live on the boat and travel whichever way you choose.
There is a boat "office" alongside the canal in Shipley which UI believe does evening trips. Another at Skipton for the same trips along a different part of the canal, very attractive scenery.
Again they do food on board or there is a very good fish and chip shop alongside.

I am planning a visit to the locks this fall and am on a tight schedule. How long should I allow to visit the locks?
Written 24 June 2016
If there is a boat in the lock I'd allow an hour. Then if there isn't you can always stop by the cafe for ice cream or hot chocolate depending on the weather. We parked near the lock and walked from there (about 5 minutes walk)

Free parking on all nearby roads. I parked on the Park road and walked 0.4miles. On the way walking many parking spaces available both sides of the road. Beck lane is the nearest but narrow road. Can park only one side. I visited June 2019.
