Scenic walk
Mar 2021 • Couples
The walk around the lake is simply beautiful! It’s also a hell of a lot easier than most other walks you’ll encounter in the Lake District.
There’s a proper path stretching anti clockwise from Buttermere and it offers the most stunning reflections from the mountains on to the water. It’s quieter and just as scenic as any other lake in the area, plus the drive into it is awesome!

Great place for a stroll
Feb 2021 • Couples
Lovely walk this afternoon. We parked at Gatesgarth Farm car park- ticket machine was out of order but normally its £4 for the day. Carbpark is on the small side. We walked around the whole lake and we met a lovely flock of sheet and Highland cattle.

First half of the walk are very accessible however we found after we started coming back towards the car park, it got narrow and wasn't as flat as the rest.

Coming through the tunnel was a task in itself! We hadn't got good footwear so had to use the random stones as a stepping stone.

Overall, great place! Be aware, no toilets about...

Lovely walk terrible weather!
Dec 2020
We walked anti-clockwise around the lake the weather was not too bad when we started but was dreadful by the time we finished. We intend to do the walk again and get chance to see anything we missed the first time. Having been chased by a cow on a previous walk I was very nervous when I saw the cows in the open field why do farmers not warn people?

What an amazing place - the views are breathtaking from every angle.

I went in a bright sunny day at the beginning of October so had the additional advantage of all the autumnal colours.

Make sure you add it to your list.

The most beautiful lake
Oct 2020 • Friends
One of my favourite places on the planet!! The walk is approximately 2 hours round and relatively flat.
There is a nice pub at one end called The High Stile Kitchen which is part of the Buttermere Court Hotel and the food is delicious!! Dog friendly too. That is where we tend to park as it is cheapest. And half way round there is a little ice cream van which sell hot and cold drinks too.

Thoroughly enjoyed the clockwise stroll around the lake. Plenty of others walking but keeping covid19 safe!

A lovely walk
Oct 2020
On a sunny day we decided to travel to Buttermere to walk around the lake of the same name, a walk of about four and a half miles. Parking was interesting with no signs where to go (go into the village and turn right before the hotel) and very little space, even at10 am although we did find a field being used for parking at the end of the main parking area. Also beware, the instructions on the parking machine are not easy to follow. We walked clockwise around the lake without any problems although in places the path isn’t suitable for push chairs, the path through the short Hasness tunnel was flooded so appropriate footwear is needed. There’s a short distance of road walking at the end of the lake but apart from that the walk was very enjoyable and uneventful.

Best View of Lakes
Oct 2020
Move over Windermere if you are looking for a alternate to usual tourist hot spots of Windermere then i highly recommend to take a detour to Buttermere Lake. Not only is the drive fantastic but the views easily beat that of Windermere. Make sure you pass by Honister Pass to soak in the slate mine views and take a long drive through the cascading and winding mountain roads. Been visiting the lakes for over 20 years and the hills and walks around Buttermere are easily the best views i have seen. Dress warm and pack some food and let your feet lead the way.
