Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We visited mirror lakes during a day trip to Milford Sound with the excellent Mitre Peak.

Mirror Lakes are a set of lakes lying north of Lake Te Anau and west of the road from Te Anau to Milford Sound .

You can get excellent pictures of the mirror like reflection of the mountains on the lake. Its just a short walk down a path from the main road.

This is a must visit on the way to milford Sound.

Mirror Lake is right on the highway, so it’s no trouble at all to check it out on the way to or from Milford.
IF it’s a sunny clear day, AND there’s no wind blowing (like, absolutely none) AND the ducks are not disturbing the water AND there’s no weed taking over the surface, well, the view is incredible – it’s a perfect mountain reflection.
Every other time this is still a nice spot to gaze across the pond to the valley and mountains beyond, and in peak season there’s often a coffee cart too.

Stopped here quite early in the morning to see the mirror effect on our way down to Milford Sound. Water was very still and there was a good reflection but would have been better if the sky was clear. - Hint - beware of Sandflies here, seemed to be quite a few. We stopped in the afternoon on the way back when weather was nicer and the sun out, but mirror effect was just not there as more movement on the water.

Mirror Lakes is right on the highway - no turnoff, the parking is extensive and adjoins the road, and from there it's a 2 minute stroll along the boardwalk - you can see this in 10 minutes.
But it only works if the sun is out and the wind is down, so, stop on the way to Milford Sound, and if it's not working, check it out again on the way back.
While the best, most prefect reflections are more likely in the morning, contrary to the report earlier you can still get a decent view in the afternoon.
There was fog when we drove past in the morning so we stopped on the way back in the late afternoon, and got some pretty good reflections.
There was a tiny breeze, but our biggest problem was the ducks swimming past and disturbing the surface.

A free thing to do while driving between Te Anau and Milford Sound. Plenty of parking, best to visit on a fine day and whilst driving northbound for ease of parking.
Wheelchair accessible. There is only about 100 mtrs of walkway so 15 minutes is ample time for a visit.
The sign in the water could do with an upgrade.

You don't spend much time here. It's more of a photo stop opportunity that a visit. We just spent about 15-20 minutes on a short walk to the lakes and back. very beautiful though and also plenty of birdlife to watch out for.

This was just a short stopover to stretch our legs on a longer journey. A very pleasant short walk across boardways down to the edge of a glacial lake. When the weather is good, and the water perfectly calm, as it was when we were there, you get a perfect mirror reflection of the mountains & hills in the water, making a perfect photo op.

On this trip, we stayed in Te Anau and drove all the way down to Milford. No boat trip this time. Instead we stopped at so many places to do short walks or just to admire waterfalls, pure fresh water gushing through huge boulder rocks. View the valleys and huge mountain ranges.
The sound of silence is an experience as you walk through the forest.
Long walks, short walks. Whatever you want to do.
Mirror Lake was one of the stops. Beauty at its best. Little ducks sometimes cause little ripples, but that is OK.
Fiordland National Park is nature beauty at its best

We only stopped here for a short while en-route to our next destination. However the views on our short walk were truly amazing and absolutely worth a visit. Easily missed but make the effort to spend day 30 minutes here at least.

A beautiful glacier lake on the way to Milford Sound. The boardwalk is short and easy to do with fantastic views. There are a couple of signage to tell you what animals and plants are in the area. Cool fungi growing in the area.
