About
The Aso Caldera is one of the largest calderas in the world. One of the peaks inside the caldera (Nakadake) is still an active volcano. The ground around the Nekodake crater is deeply scarred from past eruptions and visitors can get an up-close view at the thick white smoke and steam that billow up from the depths of the earth. Access to the crater area is subject to volcanic activity and weather conditions. Please check the Aso Volcano Disaster Prevention Council website in advance. People with asthma, lung disorders, or heart problems are not allowed to enter due to presence of volcanic gases. Transportation access By car: 1 hour and 10 minutes from the Kumamoto IC of the Kyushu Expressway to Aso summit via Route 57 and the Akamizu leg of the Mt. Aso Summit Route. By shuttle bus: Between Mt. Aso Sanjo Hiroba and Nakadake crater-side parking: one way Adults 500 yen, Children 250 yen (round-trip on Mt. Aso park road): Standard car 800 yen, kei-vehicle 600 yen, motorcycle 200 yen

    Day trip
Nice trip from kumamoto. You can take from jr station a special train. Both kawasemi yamasemi or aso boy train are good. In about 1.30h you arrive at aso station. Here just outside station you find an office with an automatic ticket machine to buy the shuttle's ticket. Be carefully that accept only cash. There is only 1day ticket at 1300 yen. See timetable attacched. This shuttle stop at aso vulcano museum (you can skip) and then at asosan nishi eki station. From there you cam choose how reach crater. Or take another shuttle for 650yen one way, or walk about 1,5km.

    Walk round the crater rim
We were blessed with a sunny day and a day that we could drive up to the crater . Entry cost 800 yen . The air was filled with sulphur smell and the walk is not recommended for the asthmatics and those with heart condition . The walk could take about 5/10 min or up to an hour pending on how much you want to walk . It is wheelchair friendly .

    Aso-san!
We drove right to the top of the site and plenty of parking bays. There is a fee to enter the crater. The day was perfect for us and clear blue sky. Thank goodness Aso-san was resting peacefully…

An exciting and daunting location that is easily accessible. Indicates earthly activities and makes humans look smaller.
