Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a wonderful little family run Castle - it is is open to visitors 3 days a week 10.30-4.30pm on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays. They ask for £4 donation for the upkeep of the castle. There is a little guide book to buy for your visit (50p). There is the Garrison tower (c. 1209), the Great Keep (c. 1170), the Dovecote Tower (built around 1380) Gilbert de Clare's Treasure Tower (1289) and the Great Hall (built before 1314) . It is a quaint little castle and well worth a visit. The time is your own to explore. We went just out of season (very early September) and there weren't too many people when we were there - which was nice. There is a free car park next to the castle.

Lovely campsite, friendly host, excellent facilities, I'd definitely recommend this if you want a quiet, clean and well run campsite.
I've camped at a lot of sites but this one is by far the best equipped.

We enjoyed a good hour wandering around the ruins, enjoying the scenery and learning about the castle from the volunteer at the entrance and the information sheet provided. Well worth a quick visit.

Glamming & camping.
Hubby and I stayed in Toms barrel while our (adult) daughters & partners camped for two nights in August 2022.
My first time glamping and I want to go back!
Lovely small, friendly and beautiful site. Tom and Laura were so accommodating and friendly and the site had a lovely friendly atmosphere.
Toilet & shower block was cute and clean with everything you’d need.
The shared kitchen area was rustic and stocked with most things needed to cook a meal. The lack of a tin opener was the only thing we could find a problem as we forgot ours but hey the wine corker worked!
Tom was knowledgeable and helped us decide where to go to swim in the river Usk.
Free access to the castle was lovely and well worth a visit as its stunning.
I wouldn’t book Toms barrel next time as I have mobility problems and the bed was very high but entirely my mistake. If you do have considerable mobile problems this isn’t the site for you due to the terrain.
Limited electricity points for camping.
Although most people were super considerate,
Some obviously illiterate people ignoring the signs and drove (quite fast) onto the camping field to pack up their car and not taking their vehicles to the parking area.
All-in-all we definitely want to go back possibly for more than two nights.
Beautiful and quaint, boutique but rustic, accommodating and friendly.
Great value for money and off the beaten track.

Totally amazed by this place. Went with my husband and son. Much more to it than first meets the eye. Left to wander around as we wanted. Lovely views. Looking at the glamping they have for summer. Nice and quiet. Careful with young children though don't let them wander off.

This is a lovely castle to look around but note that it is not open every day as it states elsewhere.(It is not open on a Saturday for example) It is a very reasonable £4 per adult. Lovely to be able to look around by yourself but if you have children with you I would keep a close eye on them - lots of steep drops and there were ladders left up against walls. Having said that, well worth a visit.

We visited on a very quiet weekend and it was lovely being able to explore the castle ruins and the grounds in peace. I believe the castle is privately owned and we were greeted by the owner when we arrived. I got a slightly brusque reply when I asked whether tea and coffee were available and got the impression this was considered to be too down market. Feels like they are missing a very easy way of making a bit of extra profit by not offering this.

I cannot thank Tom and Laura enough. We arrived last week absolutely soaked as we had come up from Cornwall on a motorcycle holiday. Unable to pitch our tent due to the horrendous weather Laura opened up the shepherds hut for us to dry out with a lovely log burner in there. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they are only a phone call away. Again thank you so much i would definitely recommend this beautiful campsite.

What a glorious castle to visit. So much history and they also have the facility for weddings and events as well as glamping places to stay in.
Really lovely and welcomed by the lady on the gate.
Worth a visit and only £4 each to spend half a day wandering among the historic grounds.
