We had a great day at the races, with plenty of parking, ample indoor space to enjoy the facilities provided and lots of staff to assist if required Sandown Park is first class. The racing was very enjoyable and a few wins on the tote added to the excitement. Well worth a day out

I got a group of friends together for the Tolworth Hurdle Day event on 4th January as a New Year get together and to check the course out with a view to returning in the summer. Although we had to brave the cold we loved the day, the course had great atmosphere although it is not as high end as others. The entrance is very reasonable and you can bring your own food and drinks (max half a bottle of sparkling wine or wine or 4 cans of beer or cider per person, no spirits or fortified wine) as long as you have it in the picnic area. The picnic area itself is by the course not tucked away so you still get to see a lot. Easy to get to by train or 715 / 458 bus from Kingston (approx £2-£3 from Kingston bus station) or K3 from Surbiton. train station is 15 minutes walk to venue and bus stop is across the road. Really busy car park and we only arrived at 1 p.m. (doors opened at 10:30 a.m. for a first race at 12:15)

It was the Tingle Creek meeting and we made sure to get to the racecourse an hour before the first race. I would recommend taking a taxi there if you can and avoid the hassle of parking, as well as enjoying a few drinks during the day. We found ourselves in the champagne bar next to the paddock, where we enjoyed a glass or two of bubbly. I thought the prices were a little steep and the service wasn’t the best, but we were all there to have a good time and we certainly did. The layout at Sandown is excellent, making it easy to view the horses in the parade ring then walk through the stand and have a wonderful view of the course and the unfolding drama as the horses jump over the fences or hurdles. A lot was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
