About
The ascent to the hill of the "old earth", made possible by the impressive panoramic lift, gives to the visitors the thrill to enjoy a view of great value: the mount Etna and Taormina, the valley of the Alcantara River and at the same time to be touched by the charm of the vestiges of centuries of Mediterranean history.A skilful restoration work has unearthed a monumental archaeological site of exceptional importance.

An amazing castle off the beaten track
Oct 2019 • Couples
We weren't sure we were in the right place when we found this but parked up (v small car park) and headed up the cable car to the top. We were the only people there (probably out of season) but had a great explore of the views and the castle. There wasn't much information when walking around and the cafe was closed but the views were great. It has been restored well but feels like much more could be done with it to explain the history. €7 each seemed reasonable value.

Castle on the hill
Apr 2019 • Couples
Driving south from Giardini-Naxos, we noticed this castle and funicular. Turned off the highway and soon noticed boards indicating a route to this Castillo. The entrance fee is a modest €7 for a ride up in the funicular and entrance. Ruins are exceptionally well preserved with glass doors all over. Some of the English signs are a bit faded. The view from here is worth the visit. Archeological year the construction of the walls are interesting.

Worth the visit because of the history, the view and the restoration work. There is a very steep cable car ride to reach the top. The guides are very helpful.

Worth a visit
Aug 2018 • Family
If you want great views of the Catalabiano area, this is a must visit. Not much else to do once your there. Toilets are available. Take some water with you, which you can buy from the ticket shop before the ascent to the castle. Parking can be a problem if busy.

Interesting castle, lack of information in English
Aug 2018 • Family
I number of locals said we were waisting our time visiting this attraction. I understand what they were saying. The castle has had some money thrown at it. Quite a lot of money by the look of some of the things that have been done including the chair lift entry. One reviewer described this castle as a folly and I agree. A restaurant and Cafe are built up in the castle and both are shut down. The morning we went only one other couple visited the attraction and they left after 45 minutes. There is also some kind of extravagant staff toilet that looks like it should be in a nightclub. Very strange.
The whole front of the structure has walkways and modern steps all over it and it's hard to get any nice photos. There was no guide or information other than a couple of disjointed tabs scattered throughout the building. The whole thing looks more like a backdrop for Group (church) conferences to be honest. We tried to engage the lift operator about the history of the building and he did mention something about a Norman armoury but then seemed to loose interest and he walked off to use the nightclub toilet.
Overall we were disappointed with Castello di Calatabiano which is a shame because I can see the potential of the site.

Nice views and enjoyable walk down to the village.
Apr 2018 • Couples
We took the funicular up to the castle and decided to walk back down to the village. The views are very nice from the top.
During the high season you can probably have a drink and a meal there but when we were there everything was closed.

Spectacular view
Sep 2017 • Friends
Before you plan to go visit their website which gives all the information you need about opening hours and costs. There are seasonal timetables and some days of the week they are shut.

The funicular is an interesting way to access the castle, but can be affected by weather and reliability issues.

It seems that there is a method of walking up to the castle by driving through the town up a narrow road, parking and then walking past the church part way up.

Once at the castle it is very well laid out and accessible with metal walkways provided to most areas. The views from up top are brilliant.

This place is well worth a visit and definitely under-publicised.

A little Gem... undiscovered yet...
May 2017
It's in the shadows of Taormina and there is no much left... but... the atmosphere and history behind and the view are all worth!
Strongly recommended!
