About
Elstree and Borehamwood Museum is an independent local history museum which opened its doors in 2000. It evolved out of a community history project with a small collection of objects and photographs. Run entirely by volunteers, the museum has acquired a large collection of items leading to the production of themed displays, talks, workshops for schools and local community groups and answering a busy enquiry service.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Small, one room local history museum but full of interest. I went specifically to see the display about the unbuilt "northern heights" tube line which was highly engaging. The volunteer staff are very friendly and helpful. Well worth a look but if coming a distance might be better to check the current display to make sure it is something that suits your interests.

Been there a few times now, always something really interesting to see about the history of Borehamwood. Tons of photographs, video presentations. They even have specials like 'Eastenders' with props from the show. Well worth a visit.

Travelled across from Bristol especially to see the exhibition, myself and my daughter love Holby an we were not disappointed the displays were fabulous, the inside information on the show was lovely to read about, my daughter and her boyfriend even got to dress up in scrubs an do a mock operation on the maniquin that was there. Staff were also very helpful an informative they told us where the outside scenes for Holby were filmed so we could have a little look.

This museum may be tiny, but it's crammmed with interesting information on the area. Every few months the exhibition changes, and it's free! I have yet to see the current one about how the local Film Industry was saved but intend to go soon, every temporary exhibition they've had so far has been well worth a visit. The last (the Railways) was excellent with imaginative displays and interactive exhibits. My visiting Australian grand-children loved it too.
Only open on certain days, inside the library on the 2nd floor, so check opening hours before you go.
Staff are enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. You don't have to be a local to enjoy it and find it interesting, so do pop in!

What a great little place to visit, changing themes over the year, to show history of the town and area. Needs more space, but always helpful staff to advice you as you look around.

This small museum is a little gem. The current exhibition focuses on the anniversary of the Midland Railway arriving in Elstree, and tells how it was instrumental in bringing film studios to the area.
As well as being informative, entertaining and educational, the museum is blessed with staff/volunteers who offer a warm welcome, and clearly enjoy what they do.
If you're in the area, don't miss it!

A local museum explaining the history of the area before Borehamwood was made to accommodate the overspill of London's population after WW2 and recent migration.

This museum is situated on the second floor of Borehamwood library. This replaces the museum that used to be in a shop in a side street.
The museum is not large. There are displays about the old way of shopping and a timeline showing how the town had grown.
At the back there are two large display screens. On these you can listed to the memories of former workers at the many studios that used to operate in the area.this was my main reason for visiting.I am a bit hard of hearing and found the sound rather soft.Anyway quite interesting.

Please note that the display in the photo featuring Barbara Windsor no longer exists. The rear of the Museum as described by wingate has been redesigned and the display screens removed.
