This is a fabulous natural reserve. Very accesible by 4x4. It has a controlled and paid access which gives visitors a bit more confidence in the surroundings and security. Accesible and free parking area. Easy to follow and to hike trail up to the refuge where you can choose to take different paths, to the lagoon, to Iliniza Sur Summit (much more technical and requires a guide and special equipment) or Iliniza Norte, basic equipment preferred and easier to read trail. It involves a bit of easy/moderate rock climbing (no need of special rock climbing shoes because it's not that steep) amazing views and a lot of fun to reach the summit. A guide is recommended because even having been there once, with fog its easy to loose your way. 7 hour round trip easily.

Located very close to cotopaxi this is a great alternative especially if you are looking to hike. From the parking lot hit is about 4km to the base camp going from about 3800-4700. We planned to hike to the top of Illinizas Norte (5100) but did not acclimatize and did not make it past base camp. I would be prepared for a tough long trek to reach the top but not too much technical experience necessary. You can climb south but that is snow covered and need experience. Also alledgedly you can get a great view of the surrounding mountains including cotopaxi, but when we went it was foggy and cloudy so we didn't have any views.

We decided to hike up Iliniza Norte as an alternative to Cotopaxi. It is a day hike and absolutely good for one day starting in Latacunga. We really liked the hiking, but we were not satisfied with our tour operator, Tovar Expeditions. We paid 240$ for two persons and were told to be ready at 6:30am, so we had breakfast at 6:00am. At the time we had breakfast we were told, that we will be picked up at 7:30am and the pick up was even later because of an accident. So we started after 8am in Latacunga. The car had not enough fuel, so we had to make an additional stop at the gas station. Additionally, lunch was included in the tour, but we had to make another stop to pick it up. In the end we started hiking after 10am, the usual hiking time are 8h and one has to leave the national park at 5pm. We got really stressed when starting with the hike so late. Luckily, we were well acclimatized and good hikers, so we needed 3:20h to the summit and around 2h back. But nevertheless we would not recommend this tour operator, but would definitely do the hike again.
