Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When we visited this church, there was no entrance fee, but you had to make a donation of one euro per person.
The church looks very pompous inside and is very beautiful. But as mentioned earlier, it is currently being renovated, which means that chandeliers, for example, are covered with plastic bags and certain other things are also protected from dirt by plastic bags. Nevertheless, there is a lot to see and discover in this church. It is definitely worth a visit.

Done in Roman Baroque style, the interior is also impressive. Located in then Birgu/now Vittoriosa, it was the church of the Knights before the Co-Cathedral was built, an indication of its historic importance. Behind the altar the martyrdom of St Lawrence is depicted in a large painting by Mattia Preti. A gentleman took us for a close up view of the depiction of the burning of the saint.

Supposedly the first church of Malta - 1090AD! There is a very impressive statue of the saint which is paraded through the streets in August. It's a beautiful building with, as you can imagine, a very long history! Worth a visit but note his death was rather gruesome.....

This church on the Vittoriosa Waterfront is quite impressive.
It is the largest of the 12 churches of Vittoriosa.
It is richly decorated inside with classic furnishings.
The main entrance is accessible via a staircase because the church is built against a mountain.
The church also houses the statue of St Lawrence, which is carried along with his relics in the annual procession.

Beautiful baroque church on the promenade of Birgu. A first church is documented as early as the fifteenth century and, when the Order settled in Malta was based in Birgu, so the Church of St. Lawrence was used as the Order's conventual church until the Knights were transferred to the new capital Valletta. The current church was built in the late seventeenth century and is one of the notable spots on the Birgu waterfront. It also contains some works of art.

We cannot praise the guy on the door enough - knowledgeable, friendly and clearly passionate about this church. It was so touching. A beautiful church unique in it's relic collection and well worth a visit. Thank you to the lovely gentleman who mans the door and is a fountain of knowledge - so generous with his time

Entrance by donation, inside we found the church with some work in progress. The pulpit was also absent. Quick 15 minute visit, they also provide you with a small booklet where you can read the history of this church and its works.

Maybe I'm being picky, but I didn't find anything really special about this church (well, at least I didn't get kicked out, as happened to me and others in Malta who visited a church). It was pretty, but in less than 5 minutes I was done. If you're there, go take a look, but in my opinion, it's not worth the detour.

Situate in Birgu - at the waterfront .... the St. Laurence church is standing on the site where the original conventual church of the knight of St. John stood between 1530 and 1571 (after 1571 they moved to Valletta - but that is another story/review).
The baroque style rebuild of the church was completed in 1696 and it was consecrated in 1723 - so in 2023 it got to its 300 years since the consecration.
An impressive building - a nice architectural piece of the baroque style ... once you are in Birgu it is definitely worth a stop...
Entrance is on the side ... when we were there the main entrance was not opened - and to visit you pay a symbolic fee of 2 Euros/adult.
Decoration inside are impressive - the altar piece is a painting by Mattia Preti - the Calabrian Knight. (but at the entrance you will find a list of the most important artists who have contributed to what you see inside.)
It was damaged during the air raids of WWII but it was restored and today you can admire when you are in Birgu.

A landmark in Birgu. Your best chance to visit it might be during the services, either in the morning or evening.
