The Canaan Downs is a great place to get away from the crowds, but you need some determination to get there... The gravel road is very narrow and winding at times and requires about 1.25 hours drive time from Takaka. The campground itself is rather...More

We drove the 11km windy and narrow road in to Canaan Downs to walk to Harwood's Hole. The road itself is quite an interesting driving through an unusual landscape of grass, bush and large rocks. However it should be driven with caution as there are...More

Been here so many times I can't remember now. The view from the look out is absolutely amazing. It is worth the drive down the narrow winding gravel road - trust me.

Easy to see why Lord of the Rings (parts of it) where filmed here. The walk to Gorge lookout is steep and very rocky but worth it. Climbing over the rocks to get to the vista once you are at the top is treacherous but...More

This is a really good quality gravel road with quite magical scenery that changes a lot along the drive in. Drove through the reserve on way to Harwoods Hole. It's quite surreal in places through some of the forest. Looks like a nice out of...More

I really liked this spot. The gravel road seemed to go on for quite some time and was a tad narrow in places with our van and it was $6 charge once you arrived however there was running water and drop toilets. The smaller toilet...More

The road out is not for the faint hearted, it is gravel and would not be recommended for large caravans/campers. Stick to it and you'll be rewarded with the Canaan Downs 'freedom camping' area (before you get to the DoC site). There is a map...More

Didn't stay at the reserve - it is the inland entry to the fantastic Abel Tasman National Park. The bush and walk to the hole are incredible. The stones there are uneven in places, the hole is scarily deep, and unfenced, be very careful with...More

We went here on a rather wet day, but the scenery was beautiful. The Downs are a huge piece of rolling fields with many animals living here, including lots of sheep (it is NZ afterall). We saw a few geese and what may have been...More

We were on the campsite - it was so extremly stinky in whole the campsite that it couldn't imagine! But also many people. Except extremly stinky toilets you don't have any other facilities. Yeah, there is a water but not drinkable.
