Visited the heritage & cultural centre in August 2019. Minimal charge for visiting. No photos allowed. Information on display in this small building is temporary & is on rotating basis. Would liked to have had some assistance &/or more information on how to locate information re my ancestors who left the island in the 1800's for Canada. Would be nice to have group tours of the island coordinated with knowledgeable guides to help visitors better understand the history & culture in a visual way. This centre & experience can be expanded in SO many ways.…

Check the opening hours as sometimes it looks closed and its not. You get a cup of tea with your entrance fee. The old newspapers are a great read and tell a lot about old Barra.

Lovely young man at desk with helpful suggestions Not really being into the history of the local wonderful priest and herring stories I found it all a bit limited Would loved to have had more info on the McNeill pirates,Viking influence and Iron Age Forts

We like to visit local heritage centres and discovered this one, though small in area, was chock-full of fascinating information about a range of people, the fishing history and events from the area. Friendly volunteer on duty asked for the small charge towards the upkeep, which we paid willingly. …
