There are so many wonderful things I could say about this trip - full of exciting events and places that I probably would not have found and done on my own. Peter and Andy made it fun for all. The trip was planned with my good friend, her husband, my sister and brother-in-law. We all had such a great time and Spanish steps always made the arrangements so that we could be together when traveling. It was so nice to have everything looked after and not have to worry about what was next. We came across Spanish Steps on the internet and was very pleasantly surprised to find that it was everything we were looking for in a walking holiday and would definitely take another trip with them. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who is looking to enjoy the food, drinks, some unique areas in Spain, great tour guides, small group and walking.

Our group of 6 family and friends joined 5 others for the Competa Higher level walking week in October 2019.

Three of us had been on a Spanish Steps walking holiday previously, and three were new to Spanish Steps, but we all agreed that's It was a wonderful week for so many reasons. . . The walks, the location, the company, the food, the accommodation and of course the hosts!

It is a very personalised service - Peter and Andy tailor their walks to the ability of the group and we enjoyed a variety of suitably challenging walks (which was exactly what our group wanted). Sue made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed.

The accommodation is basic but quirky and charming - we loved it!
Breakfasts and dinners in the village were excellent.
Everyone in our group was friendly and we had a great time together.

Spanish steps really is exceptional value for money and definitely one of the best (if not the best!) walking holidays we’ve experienced. We look forward to our next holiday with them!

My third holiday with Spanish steps. Great walking, good company and we ate at excellent local restaurants. On the Competa holiday breakfast is taken at a local restaurant, outside, on the village square, lovely to chat to other walkers and watch the town wake up.
Walks varied, amazing views, challenging, but worth the effort needed. Guides local knowledge of great interest. As we walked we picked and ate wild walnuts, fennel flowers and pomegranates.
At the end of the holiday everyone was talking about their next trip!

I have just realised that I had not responded to your excellent review. Thank you. It was a pleasure to walk with you again and we look forward to doing so again in September on our Pueblos Blancos adventure.

A holiday which exceeded expectations. Peter, Sue and Andy have perfected the art of hosting an provide an inclusive package of walking, good food, quirky authentic accommodation and are full of information on the area and informative stories.
The walks are tailored to the abilities of the group and their is encouragement to achieve your goals.
I was hoping for a restful holiday with good walking and company and that was certainly provided. The social aspect of this walking holiday is an important aspect and our hosts were very mindful of that.
The Easter celebrations were a bonus and a feast for the eyes. Well worth a visit at this time to experience Easter from a different cultural perspective and to see various churches in the old villages, with their Christian and Moorish influences.

What a fantastic week my wife and I had on the Spanish Steps Competa-based guided walking holiday (September 2023). Peter, Sue and Andy (who run Spanish Steps) are experienced, knowledgeable and hospitable hosts and made us feel very welcome. They ensured that we had a varied and rewarding programme of walks with just the right level of challenge. We stayed in their wonderfully quirky, traditional townhouse in the centre of Competa and they also enabled us to sample the very best of Spanish food in a number of Competa's restaurants. This holiday represented tremendous value for money and I can't recommend it highly enough.

This was a much anticipated walking holiday with a friend who was keen to repeat her previous enjoyable experience from a few years back. As it turned out, my friend was not able to go & we were fortunate that Peter & Sue kindly accepted my partner ( who was not a walker) to take my friend's place. Thereafter, we were both much touched by the spirit of inclusiveness resulting in plenty of good memories to take away at the end of our holiday.
Right from the start, Peter & Sue's hospitality overflowed: location was stone throw from the plaza, accommodation in a big old house felt like living in a bit of history, meals were plentiful & varied. Andy superbly led our small group, mindful of our abilities & I felt much encouraged despite not being in optimal fitness for this holiday. Andy clearly shares his parents' passion for Competa & the mountains, We were very lucky to have a taste of that Andalusian magic. I hope to be back again....

Thank you for your well written and complimentary review. I think quite rightly that we would not normally accept non-walkers on our adventures. In the circumstances it seemed the right thing to do and I am please that both you and Michael enjoyed the experience.

I am quite late in posting this review but the memories of a great hiking holiday with Andy and the Spanish Steps crew in May 2023 are still fresh indeed.

We are a Dublin based hiking club with several sections and heard from one of those groups that they all really enjoyed their week hiking the hills around Competa in 2022 under the watchful eye of Andy and crew.

A few photos of Competa village and the surrounding countryside persuaded us to make enquiries. We got plenty of information from Sue and Peter but a pledge of two complimentary bottles of wine with dinner every night ensured a swift booking for 12 of us for first week in May 2023.

Competa and its neighbouring villages and hamlets are truly authentic Pueblo Blancos and the walks up on the hills above them are equally charming without being overly taxing. Andy guided us on all those walks and his passion for this part of Andalucia was impressive. Even Flora and Fauna was not outside his remit.

Each day the walk was different usually ending in one of the nearby small villages with a stop in a local bar for refreshments. Our lodgings were in Competa in a renovated old mansion which was somewhat labyrinthine but thoroughly charming ! The roof terrace is an ideal spot to enjoy some pre- dinner sundowners not to mention the views. Being an Irish group, we reconvened there after dinner as well to make sure no one went to bed thirsty.

A great time was had by all and this was much enhanced by the amazing hospitality of Sue, Peter and Andy who were fabulous hosts and who looked after us so well on this our first - but hopefully not last - time with them in Competa.

Book with them now before the house gets full up !!

While the walking experience as a whole on the Camino was superb, there were problems along the way. For example a hotel that had bed bugs, or our guide who didn't know the history of the places we walked but instead, handed us printed sheets to read for ourselves, and the company billing me for full double room payment when I was travelling solo with friends. The choice of rooms in Spain is a lesser charge for solo travellers who are placed in small rooms, so obviously my being charged for a double room by the company, even tho' I was in a single room, meant that extra profit went into their pockets. Very dishonest.

THIS REVIEW IS INCORRECTLY LISTED and relates to a holiday provided by a tour agency based in Asturias in the north of Spain. The agency and their ( website www.spanishsteps.com ) has no connection with Spanish Steps - Andalucia. Both the reviewer and Tripadvisor.co.uk have been told of this error but the review cannot be re-directed as the agency does not have a Tripadvisor listing. This is somewhat surprising as their website displays numerous Tripadvisor logos and 5 star reviews!

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of combining walking days on this trip with the opportunity to spend time exploring the entrancing town of Chefchaouen The hustle and bustle of Fez was a significant contrast after the relative peace of Chefchaouen and we certainly needed the guide to guide us through the Medina and show us the historic leather tannery.

Peter has been running these trips to Morocco for many years and has managed to balance keeping the price very reasonable whilst finding comfortable hotels and local restaurants that will accommodate a group of 13. Breakfasts were huge and the two lunches we enjoyed in local villages on our walking days were certainly a highlight of our trip.

In brief, a well organised trip in the company of a congenial host.

I was one of a party of 8 on the Competa – Holy Week walking trip organised by Spanish Steps. It was an excellent holiday. The walks were interesting, Andy the guide and when he was with us Peter, told us lots about points of interest that we walked past, or could see in the distance. The trip was excellent value for money. Breakfast was excellent with more than I required on offer. Evening meals with wine or beer was also included in the price, that’s unusual in my experience of this type of holiday. I spent much less money than I expected too. We were blessed with temperatures around 20 degrees and blue skies. The other members of the group were great company. Being holy week there were many Easter themed religious processions around the town which added another layer of interest, very different to anything I’ve seen before. Competa is an interesting place too, lots of narrow streets, most of which are going up or down. I hope to return on day.
