Initially surprised that was not the original cave but only built up as a copy in a modern building. This was done to protect the original cave from tourists & natural elements that would ruin it. Once you are in the cave, your first impression is astonishment! And this continues all the way until you get out. It’s a wonderful experience. You discover and learn fantastic things of our ancestors! Really impressive!

Having visited Chauvet a couple of years ago we were really excited to go back and brought some friends with us. However, instead of the engaging tour guide we were so impressed with on our last visit, we were told to download an app for the guided tour. The app wouldn’t download for everyone, so we ended up with 2 mobile phones between 8 of us. When I pointed this out to a member of staff he told me we should have downloaded it earlier, it was too late, and we would just have to all read the descriptions sharing a phone. Of course, that was virtually impossible, so we missed out on the story completely. Doing away with the guides seems to be to increase the capacity, which was also worrying at the current time.

Dear suzi04, Thank you for your comment. We are sorry to hear of your disappointment. In view of the health context, we were forced to offer an alternative to guided tours. Usually, we give headsets to visitors to hear the guide's microphone. Avoiding the loan of equipment is a priority to avoid any risk of transmission of the virus. This organization is exceptional and effective only for the summer season. Guided tours will be back soon. We look forward to welcoming you again. Best regards The Chauvet 2 Cave team

Definitively worth the visit - reserve at least 1 hour. You will never see something similar. It is unbelieveable how people have reconstructed and made available to the public this 36000 year old cave while preserving the original one by completely closing it. And the tour is organized in a highly professional manner.

Really interesting grotte and museum. However, I have had to rate the experience as average because of the irresponsible attitude of those who run the Grotte towards COVID-19. We visited mid July 2020, were herded into the grotte with around 40 people where there was no possibility of social distancing. Even worse was the museum where about 40 people all headed straight to the first exhibition after watching a film. Most of the exhibits were interactive screens, people touching everything and no hand gel available anywhere and no sign of any staff cleaning down the screens. We ended up leaving as we felt so uncomfortable with it all. I appreciate that businesses need to make money at this time but really the number of people viewing things en masse needs to be cut down. The only precaution I could see was that masks were being worn. Sort it out folks!

Dear Astipa, We are sorry that your visit didn't bring you complete satisfaction. Indeed, in this particular period, we have worked to the best to open in good conditions. For this, precautions have been taken : provision of hydroalcoholic gel, compulsory wearing of a mask, marking on the ground to allow social distancing, and the number of visitors in the cave is limited. In the gallery, gel is available at the entrance and at the exit. Also, cleaners clean all touchscreens several times a day to ensure optimal cleanliness. Despite everything, we take note of your comment and hope to welcome you again to Grotte Chauvet 2 Best regards, The Grotte Chauvet 2 team
