What a fantastic trail, great to be able to bike along at your own pace away from the threat of cars. Plenty of scenery, places to stop along the way (can recommend lunch at the Ohinemuri Winery). Fun looking through the derelict gold mining site.

The Trail was flat, easy and goes through beautiful countryside. The Hauraki Rail Trail agents are well organised but the motels they sell you are horrible. The trail is great but I'm giving it 3 stars because of the accommodation. After cycling the trail you...More

So much fun for the kids. We had an 11 year old, 9 year old and a 7 year old on a 'tag along'. Don't stop at the Convenient Cow for lunch. Hideous food.

Great, flat biking - easy riding with lots of cafes along the way. We took 2.5 hours to get from Waihi to Paeroa with one kid on a crap bike and the rest of us on good bikes. Not too busy over Easter weekend but...More

We were lucky enough to do this ride on a cool day when there were a few showers around, thus making it very quiet. The climb from Paeroa to Waikino is very gradual and not difficult. The surface was good considering it was course stone....More

We two over 65s hired our bikes from the i-site centre at Paeroa late afternoon and the following day biked the 14km Paeroa to Waikino part of the Rail Trail, and after having coffee at the Railway Station at Waikino we biked the 14km back....More

The trail between Waihi and Paeroa follows the Ohinemuri River, which flows through the Karangahake Gorge. You won't see the most impressive steep rock formations from your bike though, as that section of the gorge is bypassed by the rail trail, which goes through an...More

We rode along the track - starting at Paeroa. The gradual uphill ride was not too difficult and the return trip was downhill all the way! Sitting on a bike gives you more elevation than walking so you can see more of the beautiful countryside....More

We loved the trail, offered bridges, tunnels, slight gradient, and good surface, AND an excellent coffee stop at Waikino half way point.

Great off-road cycle-touring. Easy grade. Lots of accommodation options, eateries and transport links. The Hauraki Rail Trail trust is a cooperation between 3 adjacent councils - seems a good model for other regions. NZ needs more of this.

Bump! I'd love to know the answer too as thinking about taking our 10mth old. The bike rental guy said people do take little ones and they often fall asleep!
