- Megaboyo13 contributionsBeautiful day outMe and my partner took our 3 year old for the day. Not only were we the first customer of the 2024 season, we were amazed by the sights. The staff were so lovely, the food was delicious and of course, the stunning waterfalls. We were so nervous that our 3 year old would be bored or tired, but he loved it. There little fairy’s hidden around, the dinosaurs and the little sights kept him so entertained. We all enjoyed it so much and will definitely return. So truly beautiful! What a lovely review to start the season with, we really appreciate you taking the time to feedback and the staff will be thrilled to hear your comments. We would love to see you again soon for another fern and fairy adventure!Written 22 March 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 March 2024
- Wez74Aldershot, United Kingdom444 contributionsCanonteign Falls.Visited here the first day it opened for the new season. It's quite well signposted so not too difficult fo find. It cost just over £22 for 2 adults + 1 dog and we spent just over 2 hours there which included having a breakfast in their cafe there. They also have a gift shop and toilets too. We didn't cover the entire grounds as we felt we'd done enough but there's also a couple of play areas for kids and nice areas for picnic during the warmer weather. We managed to hike to the waterfalls which offer great views and the trail leading us there takes in some quite nice landscaped areas. I recommend decent footwear if you aim to do the waterfall trail. We had a very pleasant day and glad we visited. Nice grounds and worth a visit. Thanks so much for your lovely review, we really appreciate you taking the time to feed back to us and we're so pleased you enjoyed your visit.Written 1 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 March 2024

- GEMMA H56 contributionsWow!! What a beautiful area of natural beauty!Wow! We are on holiday nearby, whenever we go away we always try to find a waterfall nearby, we have been to quite a few and this is by far my favourite one so far! Everything is so well maintained, the views are amazing, it’s so peaceful, plenty of places for stopping on the way for a rest and to just take in the surroundings. The fern gardens are so pretty and well designed to keep the children engaged. The staff are friendly and polite, The cream tea was amazing too and well deserved after a long but beautiful walk! Thanks so much Gemma what an amazing review to read, I have shared this with all the staff and they are so pleased you loved it so much. it really means a lot to read this thank you. Friendly staff, we enjoyed a delicious meal at the end of our walk. The labyrinth was stunning, a pleasant surprise to find in the middle of the field.Hi Tanya, thanks so much for this really lovely review, we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit and made it to the labyrinth as well as the waterfalls! - MomDawnSt. Albans, United Kingdom352 contributionsPicture perfect views and vistas. Wear good shoes and take some water.A lovely walk but make sure you have a cup of tea first! Cakes are the best I have had in a while, staff are lovely and friendly. Cost £23 for two of us to go on the walk. The wild garlic and bluebells were magical. Take a drink (or even a snack) although be aware that like most places in the UK loos are only at the beginning of the walk. Thanks so much for your lovely review, we are so pleased you loved our cakes ! They are always well deserved after the walk. Your advice is spot on as well, wear good shoes and take a water bottle. We are so pleased you saw the bluebells the season is so short but they are stunning at the moment. - ian l2 contributionsWonderful experience!Canonteign Falls in my opinion is the most wonderful place in Dartmoor! I would thoroughly recommend this place, especially for young families. Excellent play area for kids to run off any more energy (if they've got any left) after walking to the top. We don't have children but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Good trainers or walking boots essential. No good if you're unstable on your feet. Chris and the other staff were very friendly and helpful! We would definitely go again when on holiday in Dartmoor.Oh wow that really is so lovely to read, thank you, what a review. - Lynda M68 contributionsLots to see and do in a beautiful settingWe spent a wonderful day here. The setting is absolutely beautiful with lakes and parkland. The walk to the falls was fascinating but we did not go to the top because, for us older people, it was a bit tricky. However the scenery was breathtaking. Afterwards we enjoyed a cream tea - delicious! Having lived in Devon for most of my life this was one place I had never been but would thoroughly recommend it. Ideal for families with children too. What an absolutely lovely review to read, we really do appreciate the feedback so much and we will share this with the whole team. We loved our walk around canonteign. The spectacular falls, beautiful lakes and ponds, gardens and views were a sight to see. The cafe sells a nice range of goodies and we can definitely recommend the millionaires shortbread! The walk up to the falls could be quite challenging for some and definitely not suitable for all but I managed it with my dodgy hips and knees still intact and was greeted with incredible countryside views at the top. The willow sculptures, fairy doors and information boards were a nice addition for kids and adults alike. On the way out we had a mooch around the gift shop which had some lovely items. The only downside is that there is only enough here to occupy a couple of hours but that is stated in the information when booking. If you are taking children there is an adventure playground which might occupy a bit more time. You are given the opportunity to return as many times as you want for one week which does help justify the entrance fee and we would return if we are in the areas again.

Thanks so much for your fantastic review and 5 stars we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit. Many people do come and spend the day with us however on average people spend 2-3 hours. I hope you found our lower lakes and paved Labyrinth as they are beautiful. In contrast to the waterfalls and tumbling streams, the lower lakes are open butterfly meadows and weeping willows with willow sculptures and the labyrinth to take you on a thought-provoking journey. Thanks again for the 5 stars.

We really enjoyed our first visit to Canonteignfalls for the Hospiscare Open Gardens Day recently.
Logistics-wise, the postcode took us straight there on SatNav. Parking was plentiful and straightforward. Lovely cafe and shop. Staff were friendly and inviting.
Visit-wise: it's a wonderful habitat to explore, lots for adults and children to see. We were visiting as a mature couple but much about the scenery brought out our inner child. The 'garden' is home to the National Fern Collection, which is simply stunning.
The route is well laid out. Natural habitats of rock, woodland, ferns and water blend together to create mesmerising views. Lots of areas to immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature. Time to simply be! Mother Nature doing what she does best.
There was a lower route which is probably more suited for people who have physical disabilities. The pathways up near the falls are steep, there are quite a few steps and the damp misty day was starting to make the pathways slippery.
After the 'falls' trail we enjoyed lunch outside under the parasol (it was pouring with rain by then!!) but it didn't matter. The table brollies are huge and added to the feeling of being able to stay in nature. The staff in the cafe are lovely, they had been decorating the servery area with autumn leaves and foliage - such a lovely playful vibe.
The shop is well worth a visit. Lots of lovely gifts. The owners clearly love to support local artists and makers too. There was some beautiful pottery and paintings available to buy. I love to see this as it works on so many levels. Supporting the work of local artists, contributing to the upkeep of the falls, enabling you to have a memento of your visit that keeps giving (reminding you of where you bought it, who you were with etc).
Highly recommend a visit if you haven't been. If you have, I know like us, it'll be on your list for a regular repeat visit when time allows.
Would also highly recommend nearby (about 15 mins) Powderham Castle & Farm Shop & Garden it's completely different with open parkland, views of the estuary, deer and specimen trees. They have annual garden show which is very good.

First time visiting with my active Dad & excited dog tagging along as well. We took advantage of an offer for locals giving 50% off admission I must admit that was a big incentive. The weather couldn’t have been any better for this time of year. It’s such a peaceful and naturally beautiful place to visit even if you just wanted to explore ground level & sit admiring the grounds with something lovely from the onsite cafe. I’m really not someone who likes heights at all but before I knew it we were at the top! I was so proud of myself the views are breathtaking but I couldn’t go to the very edge ….. not quite that brave. We even took advantage of the free return visit (within a week of entry) to explore the rest of the grounds we didn’t get time for. Again another wonderful afternoon of amazement at this totally picturesque place. In case I wasn’t clear we really loved it & wouldn’t hesitate to go again. There’s something here for all the family to enjoy.

Lovely place to visit, admission was quite cheap didn't expect the falls to be so nice. Not suitable for people with mobility problems or without a head for heights. Lots of walking we hired a baby carrier from gift shop, time we got round the waterfall we couldn't wait to get a coffee. Cafe was a little expensive £25 for afternoon tea for 2, food quality was great just not alot of it for the price. Decent boots or trainers with alot of grip recommended.

This was a beautiful place to visit full of idyllic settings and wholesome food. Myself and my partner took the dogs and walked along the red route which was mapped out. It consisted of stunning waterfalls with view points for plenty of photo opportunities. After the walk, we enjoyed a cream tea and a sandwich for lunch and sat outside with the lovely scenery of the lake in the distance. Overall, Canonteign Falls is a great place to visit just bare in mind the tricky terrain in places to walk on and there is a fee per person to get in but it’s definitely worth paying for the visit. We will be back!

What a lovely family day we had at the falls yesterday. We were greeted with a lovely warm welcome from the very helpful staff, its always a pleasure to meet people who enjoy where they work. It's such a lovely tranquil, back to nature place to visit, something for everyone! Interesting history on the estate and fab trails for the children to follow. The fairy doors, fairies and dinasours were very well done and blended into the landscape and fun to find. The steps up to the falls are a little challenging but the view from the top was spectacular and worth every one of the 90 steps. We hired a baby carrier for £3 which was definitely worth it meaning we could all enjoy the walk to the falls. We will definitely return and recommend to others.

Local to us, but never been before. Looking for a nice dog walk, and exercise for us, with a snack and coffee at the end.
The grounds with lakes, children's play areas, labyrinth, and of course the falls are nice. The walk to the top of the falls is obviously up hill, over fairly rough steps, and good exercise. Definitely not for elderly or infirm, or pushchairs/wheelchairs. A climb to the top is worth it though as great views. The ferns near the top were nice too.You can see the falls, from the bottom, which is more accessable, although still up hill through the woods, but easier going!
We had an enjoyable visit on Mothers day, although at the end when we went to the cafe to have our well earnt coffee, the day was let down by having to wait over half an hour after paying for our coffee to be made. They could of done with another staff member making drinks, at this busy period, too quicken things up! Many people were waiting for drinks. Apart from that we had an enjoyable afternoon. Would of been 5 stars if cafe experience was better. Entry fee was reasonable.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review us. We are so pleased you enjoyed the walk. We had our busiest day of the season (probably the year!) as we had a special mother's day event and the weather was amazing. We did forewarn our visitors as they arrived that they may be subject to queues in the cafe as we were, as you mentioned, short-staffed due to staff illness. We hope you will pop back again to see that it's unusual to have queues outside event time. I do appreciate this can be frustrating at the time, thanks again for taking the time to review us. We hope to see you again soon.

It took us 3 attempts to visit in our week long Devon holiday ... but it was well worth it in the end.
Firstly we turned up at 3pm (they close at 4pm) and were very politely told not to waste our entrance fee, as would need way more time to explore. I've been before so really should have known better!
Second time the weather forecast was already iffy but as we drove the lanes towards the venue it started to absolutely hammer down. Devon has micro climates but this was verging on tropical monsoon. So we turned around.
Finally we made it and did end up spending most of the day at Canonteign in the sunshine. The lower falls are amazing for photos and the 'trek' up to the main cascade is a bit of a workout. We met one couple who had to carry their dog as he couldn't manage the steps ... now that's going above and beyond.
Also took in the lower lakes area and the new labyrinth (knowing the difference between a labyrinth and a maze is my new trivia go to).
100% recommend visiting - it's a very special place!

Got there and there were signs everywhere saying "Card payment only". This is really discriminatory to people who get paid cash and are not on benefits. They let us go in to the cafe. £2.50 for a cup of tea! I tried to pay by card and their machine would not let me pay by card!!!! Loads of kids everywhere and not really a countryside retreat. Wouldn't recommend it to families as they are signs saying if you want to go on the walks, to wear walking boots. I'm actually surprised that people with children can afford to go there.

We appreciate your feedback and we are constantly reviewing our stance on being a card-only business as we know and understand it is frustrating for some visitors. Following feedback that people want advance notice of being a card-only venue we put two signs up in the car park so that people know before they arrive. As you can see from the many positive reviews on TripAdvisor we have the most wonderful, friendly and supportive staff team who go above and beyond to help anyone. We remained card only after COVID because as a rural location, it’s difficult to get cash to a bank, and it is unsafe to keep cash on site overnight, it is very complex for us especially now so many branches have closed locally.
We are pleased you took advantage of free entry to our lovely lakeside café, I am sorry our card machine was down, this occasionally happens in a rural venue and is often linked to a dip in wifi and it is never more than a momentary issue which our staff are very adept at sorting out. Regarding children being everywhere, as a family-friendly destination on the first week of the Summer holidays in Devon you will expect to see children and families in most spots you visit. We are a beautiful waterfall walk which takes you up 220 ft to the top of Southwest's highest waterfall so we do advise you to wear sturdy walking shoes as it is quite an amazing climb. We highly recommend it to families, children love the adventure and discovery, with two adventure play parks, pay ships, trampolines, fairies in the ferns, willow dinosaurs to find it is a magical day out for the whole family.

Hi there, please can I ask if the walk is mainly in the shade? We have a dog but don’t want to bring him if not due to the heat etc. Many thanks!

Hi there yes the waterfall walk is under good shade with a woodland canopy over head. The fern garden is also in a beautiful hanging valley with lots of shade and mossy streams.

Are there any walks around the lakes suitable for a pushchair?
Written 23 September 2020
There are plenty of grounds there, a shop and a refreshments kiosk. Personally I wouldn’t bother going if you can’t go up the waterfall
Written 1 November 2020
Would this be suitable for someone scared of heights? Any perilous drops etc?
Written 3 August 2019
My dad doesn’t like heights. He was totally fine all the way until we got to the viewing platform. Apart from that it was all good 👍

Do dogs have to be on a lead at all times, or are there places where they can run?
Written 12 February 2017
Hi, dogs do need to stay on the lead all the time. As a dog owner myself I really appreciate that some dogs are well behaved off the lead but with the number of other dogs, children and also our variety of wildlife including fairly tame ducks and geese, we stay on the side of caution and require leads. I hope you do come and visit anyway and our doggy friendly staff can also help you with ideas for local places that you can let your dog have a run around.
