When I received the voucher for a wildlife tour with Steve in Uist, I was very excited.. the excitment increased even more when we started our tour, a truly unforgettable experience.. Steve is a very knowledgeable tour guide who answered to all our questions and drove us along North and South Uist to spot incredible local, wildlife.. countless birds, magnificents birds of prey, silence and the highlight of the day, an otter with little ones playing just in front of us.. an island and a trip full of beauty where we learned a lot! Thanks for the amazing day Steve! Mattia&valentina

I had a fantastic day out with Steve looking for the birds and mammals of the island. Steve was extremely knowledgeable and good company for the day. We spent the morning dodging squalls along the coastline looking at wading birds with the afternoon looking for otters and eagles. I had naively thought I would just spot them by eye or with the long end of my telephoto lens but it took Steve’s knowledge and binoculars to find them and then his spotting scope to marvel at them hunting and playing in the wild.
Of course with these trips, seeing animals is a combination of good field knowledge and luck but I feel even if we didn’t see otter/eagle it would have been a fun day out
Many thanks Steve

I had a wonderful time on the Flora of the Machair tour that Steve ran in July 2023. My primary interest was of course plants and we saw so many that I had never seen before, even managing to squeeze in a small (5!) colony of Irish Ladies Tresses on the last morning before we all went our separate ways.
But it wasn't all flowers. Steve pointed out a Black-throated Diver on a lochan right by these orchids and on previous days we had seen, amongst others, White-tailed Eagles, Otters, Hen Harriers and terrific views of Short-eared Owls. Needless to say Corn Crakes were not visible but they certainly made themselves heard when we visited Barra.
Steve is a terrific guide and has a great sense of humour. I have already recommended him to friends who are wildlife (and Western Isles) lovers.

A thoroughly enjoyable week on the Seabirds and Cetaceans tour taking in the amazing contrast in landscapes of Harris and Lewis. Steve’s extensive knowledge of Fauna, bird life and flora of the Hebrides, and his cheery personality, made for a wonderful trip.
Lots of Golden and Sea Eagle sightings, waders and great sightings of Minke Whales on the boat trip to the Shiant Islands.
Thoroughly recommended!

Highly recommended.
Steve gave us a wonderful day-long tour of wildlife on North Uist, mainly in the north-west of the island. We saw four white-tailed eagles, several short-eared owls, whooper swans with cygnets, an otter with three young, a cuckoo chick being fed by a meadow pipet, red deer, a hen harrier and a peregrine falcon.
Steve is very knowledgeable about both wildlife and the Hebrides more generally, and made the day interesting and enjoyable.
Bring the best binoculars you can get your hands on.

Steve is the friendliest, most interesting and knowledgeable guy imaginable. A total pleasure spending a day with him. He picked us up from where we were staying. Several beautiful walks in different parts of North Uist and Berneray, timed to optimise the weather on the day.
We saw a pair of Golden Eagles hunting together, Peregrines, Hen Harrier, Kestrel, Short-eared Owl, Red-throated Diver, Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit, Turnstone, many smaller birds, seals up close etc. Stephen also explained the machair and crofting, and showed us many interesting plants.
And his packed lunches are delicious, including eggs and herbs from his own croft.

Steve Duffield provided us with an excellent day out. From the coastline to circular walks around fields and lochs he managed to impart some knowledge and appreciation of the varieties of plants and wildlife.

Just back from a week with Steve Duffield on his 'Skuas and Conrncrakes' trip and had a fantastic time. Our interest is predominantly birding but we were delighted to be shown other interesting fauna and flora as well including various moths, plants and of course the otters!
The birding was superb - we've been on many birding holidays both in the UK and Europe and this was right up with the very best. We duly saw all four types of skuas on their migration and had close views of several corncrakes. Other highlights included: red necked phalarope, red necked, black necked and great northern divers, a snowy owl and multiple views of short eared owls. Aerial displays from Golden Eagles and Hen Harriers were stunning as were sightings of unusual birds such as Garganey and Corn Bunting. Steve is an affable and friendly person who does his very best to enable you to see everything that the Uists have to offer in a supportive way. He is hugely knowledgeable and has that amazing ability possessed only by the very expert of being able to pick out something unusual - often at a considerable distance and while driving. We cannot recommend him too strongly and hope to be able to go back for another trip with him in the future. Tim & Hilary W
