You couldn't call this a typical reserve. It's a working farm with only limited access to fields, there are no paths or hides. Beaches are stunning and some great birds but bring everything you need with you and allow for anything the weather can throw at you.

Great selection of birds inc Purple Sands, Twite, Corn Bunting, Barnacle Geese, white winged gulls and whooper Swans. Visitor centre only open in season. There is no viewing of the lochs which is very frustrating and typical of RSPB.

Nice easy coastal walk with great views of the coastline. Nice to see fairly traditional low impact harvesting taking place. Hordes of starlings down at the beach, lots of small waders and we were watched from the sea by some seals but wildlife fairly thin on the ground not surprising for the time of year. Good parking and facilities

Enjoyed the small exhibition in the visitor centre and beautiful scenery on the reserve walk. Had specific aim of looking for great yellow bumble bee (rare) and saw it as well as a white tailed eagle - a good day.

We were really looking forward to visiting here but the place was overrun with flies. Unfortunately we had to return after a short while. Apparently this is common so my advice would be pick a windy day to keep them off you! It looked beautiful though so we were disappointed.

We had 2 small kids so took the buggy with us. We only walked to the lovely beach which was just off the road. The Machar on route was lovely! The beach was beautiful with white sand and clear water and pretty much deserted. You can also take the car up to this beach and there is a small car... More

Small exhibition but lovely reserve walk. Walked around the headland on clearly marked path. A wealth of wildlife and flowers. A perfect setting and is well cared for. Would love to visit again.

We have visited the reserve many times over the last 20 plus years We love the waymarked walk and always make it the first walk of the holiday. Interesting to the recordings of bird sitings in the visitor centre This time the weather was superb and the birds were plentiful. Lots of Arctic Terns near the beach Welcome addition at... More

Balranald is a beautiful reserve and the birds are very easy to see. We spotted a corncrake quite quickly after hearing it. The facilities are great, and new since our last visit is a van run by the farmer's wife selling hot drinks, bacon rolls and delicious cakes - very highly recommended! The eggs are good too - we bought... More

I was a little dubious about the prospect of visiting an RSPB reserve on an island already full of birds....however, my reservations were soon dismissed upon commencing the pretty 4.5km walk around the Balranald reserve. Oyster Catchers and Arctic Terns were aplenty and so too the remnants of the otters' breakfasts - lots of devoured crabs shore side. We enjoyed... More
