Overall, the web pages concerning the Monteveglio Park recommend hiking in the season in which the vegetation is most pleasant; that is, from late spring to autumn. But I found the "Rio Ramato e Calanchi dell'Africa" trail (almost everywhere perfectly signposted) attractive even in mid-March; that is, in a season in which the trees and most of the shrubs are still bare (except for the beautiful blooms of some fruit trees). This is because the central stretch of the trail, that takes place into the badlands ("calanchi") or near them, is further disturbing (and therefore attractive) because the ugly appearance of the gullies devoid of vegetation is even more striking.
To reinforce this feeling, the panel illustrating the site of the “Podere Africa” also contributes along the way. It designates an ancient farm, now completely destroyed, and abandoned for more than a century (I haven't seen any trace of it) which had its land in the heart of the badlands area. One can imagine how hard the life of the peasants struggling with the cultivation of these desolate lands was; how the name "Africa" traditionally given to this farm (and to this place) was justified to clearly indicate something exotic but also repulsive (this is the idea of Africa that they had), and why the farm was early abandoned.
The previous section of the trail takes place in the narrow valley floor of the "Rio Ramato" so called because a source full of iron oxides for a while reddens the bed of the stream ("Ramato" means "with the color of copper"). It contrasts strongly with the "Calanchi dell Africa" because it's humid and shady. To go up towards the badlands area, the trail follows, among other things, a deep canyon, which it travels along with a path high on the bottom (but I, although I have fear of heights, have walked it without difficulty). The third and last stretch (the trail is a ring route, with departure and arrival at the "Ca 'Vecchia" car park) climbs the slopes of the hill called "Monte Gennaro" (ca 330 mts), then it returns to the starting point on a paved road (but with very little traffic). Here the landscape is the most contrasting you can imagine with that of the badlands: well-cultivated fields, prosperous-looking farms.
Overall, this path into the Park is highly recommendable in my view.

Top choice for a peaceful and restful day nearby the city (30min drive), in the middle of Samoggia Valley , where you can feel like being somewhere else, far away from the daily life... A beautiful hill with many possibilities to walk with children on safe ways, you can also reach by foot the abbey on the top of the hill (30min walking with no hurry).
Not many services there, but public restrooms in case of need, and nature, silence, trees! A veery good park with toys for children also. Whatelse!?

A regional park for long walks of cycling in a sun day with an amazingly beautiful and historic abbey on the top of the hill. Highly recommended!

We spend there 2 days, having a meeting. Nice scenery and views but not much besides that. Difficult to get connected to the internet.

The park is well kept and there are lots of places to visit in it. The enormous abbey with its layers of chapels and beautiful onyx windows is very interesting.

We went there for visiting the Abbazia but we discovered that the whole area is very interesting. You can have a walk in one of the many paths of the park if you want to stay in the nature or if you have not enough time you can just visit the Abbazia as we did. The Abbazia is a small jewel, the crypt is really fantastic.

Hidden away between the bigger draws of Bologna, Modena and Maranello is an ideal spot to take a break from the crowds. Just wandering from the gate along the main street through the abbey and back sooths the nerves and gives random treats of flora and fauna and pleasant views.

You sometimes wonder whether you should share a place so dear … Abbazia di Monteveglio, old and fascinating abbey in a beautiful landscape. This is one of my favorite places! I some back since 30 years. Beautiful in all seasons… autumn with Castagne and vino nuovo, winter with mist and snow and an open fire place, spring with many flowers and birds and especially summer with its beautiful sunrise and long evenings.

Old abbey - the church offers a free access. Not far (30 km) from Bologna and Modena.

There is a nice and small scale family Bed and Breakfast – B & B Abbazia, to enjoy if you take some time for it. Medieval castle around. You absolutely need a car for it… and some Italian is handy as well in order to enjoy the atmosphere better. Breakfast in the garden. Please stay at least two days: it is a shame to leave too quickly! The trattoria is fine, in the weekend only with 'prenotazione' booking a table in advance. Please enjoy your stay and let us know.

Nice 30 minute hike up from the town to this hilltop abby and village. There is a B & B and trattoria, as well as about 5 or so residences. A lovely way to spend a quiet afternoon. We heard the abby offers high quality music concerts to the public.

Nice trails, well traced. Rolling hills of Bologna, with some ups and downs. The colors of late autumn are beautiful. We really liked it.
