We stopped in Jhansi just to change transport mode from train to cab on our way from Agra to Khajuraho.
The fort is big, impressive and will entertain you for an hour or so. Plus you can add time to enjoy the views, have a more leisure stroll or even have picnic - there are plenty of nice places there. Entrance fee is 300 Rs, kids go free. Tuktuk from the station (100-150 Rs).
Main fun for us (a family of four) was that we were in the spotlight as the only non-indian tourist there. Many locals (friends, couples, families) wanted to have pictures with us. Some of them politely asked and some took photos 'in secret'... :)

Jhansi Fort or Jhansi ka Kila is a fortress situated on a large hilltop in center of Jhansi city and was at the centre of India’s first war of Independence and also for Rani Laxmibai – queen of Jhansi.
It is easily accessible by car/auto-Tuk-Tuk and the rest of the fort can be explored on foot very easily.
It is a well maintained fort open from sunrise to sunset.
There are sufficient signage's all over the fort with a map at the entrance which can be referred.
Main highlights to see in the fort are
1. Kadak Bijli Cannon
2. Ganapati Mandir
3. Bhavani Cannon
4. Spot from where Rani Laxmi Bai jumped from the ramparts of the fort on horseback, along with her son, evading capture from British forces.
It can be explored in about 3 hours. View of city from the fort ramparts is magnificent.

We had an excellent experience at the Jhansi fort. It is easily accessible by car, and the rest of the fort can be explored on foot very easily. We were able to hire a guide for Rs. 300, who helped us explain the most significant part of the fort and it's relevance to Indian history. Jhansi fort was at the centre of India's first war of independence in 1857. And it is a magical feeling to walk the same ramparts which had once witnessed many bloody skirmishes. And to walk the pathways once walked by its legendary queen (Rani Lakshmibai) just added the cherry on top. All in all it can be explored fully within 2-3 hours time. The view of the city from the ramparts is also magnificent.

Amazing experience. The place has been cleaned up recently and looks good. The laser show has also restarted. A must visit for anyone coming to Jhansi for the first time. The guides are trained. This is an important chapter of our history. And just needs 60-90 minutes. Don’t miss the evening sunset

Yes and this line tells that what the cities today placed far apart and treated much differently are the cities which have been treated differently now just because being in different states .. that includes the extra toll you have to pay to cross the cities which are just an hours distance like Orcha
Jhansi city of MANU aka ZHSI KI RANI
Yes this fort is also equipped by the light and sound show in the voice of Sushmita sen and Amrish puri and one thing I learnt from Orcha is that these shows are really worth watching they let the history peniterate into you and get it hard coded .
The fort is now trying to be well maintained . after being ruled by gangadhar & lakshmibai this was under the custody of the british officers who did amendments in the fort as required by them. From the top of fort you could really see the places like temple where lakshmi bai used to visit regularly from where the britishers attacked and all that sort of information .(PIC of machine gun)
Yes this fort has a TOPE which still has the BAROOD in it from the time of Queen of Zhasi and it is kept at the door. Not only that the fort still has the one among the first machine guns of the time
You can see the place from where the queen jumped on her horse with her adopted son and trust me you will really like to salute the young women for what she has done for the country for her motherland .After that when she went to Kind of Gwalior who not only stabbed her at the back but also didn’t …. Well and that rage is still there with the people in the city against Gwalior princely family which inturn justifies what why Sindhiyas avoid to visit the city.
So in the fort we still have a place where daily Indian national flag is flown J wow that makes me feel proud from core of my heart to salute the lady infact a teen who has brought in the revolution .
In short you are going to love the place to read more in detail log into http://creativedarshan.blogspot.com/2011/01/salute-to-jhansi-ki-rani-lakshmi-bai.html

We went to the Jhansi Fort in October this year. This 17th century fort was made by Raja Bir Singh on top of a hill as an army stronghold. The Karak Bijli tank is within the fort.
Jhansi, on National Highway No. 25 and 26, is linked by a good network of roads and railways. We travelled by the Shatabadi Express which is one of the fastest luxury trains in India. It is the best way to travel to Jhansi as it has stops at major cities such as Delhi, Bhopal, Agra and Gwalior.
From the railway station, auto rickshaws are available to take you to the fort. The fort looks very grand and majestic. The lawns of the Fort are lush green and are a great place to relax and have a picnic. We were joined by many squirrels, who we had fun feeding.
Only thing to beware about - monkeys. These naughty animals have a habit of snatching your picnic basket and running away.

"Bundeley Harbolon key munh hamney suni kahani thi... Khoob ladi mardani woh to Jhansi wali Rani thi..."
These seemed just a verse we were made to recite in school until I visited the Jhansi Fort...
Getting to know the tales of bravery of the great Queen changed my whole mind set... Hats off Ma'am! *bows*
This place is full of stories of bravery... and even the guides feel the pride as they narrate the stories!
Pretty decently maintained... may be as this place is also the broadcast centre for Doordarshan,,,
The entry fee for indian nationals is mere Rs.5 and that for foreign nationals is Rs.100, I believe fee for indian nationals should be made at par with that of foreigners, this'll do 2 goods, 1: more funds for upkeep of the place, 2: keep away people (read: couples) looking to share a few private moments!
The original fort's been destroyed/modified by the british post invasion, which actually hurts when u come to know of it! for example, they converted the deewan-e-khas & deewan-e-aam to WATER TANKS!
Its a huge property, 15 acres to be precise... but each nook and corner has to story to tell.
Do hire a local guide, its worth it if u really interested history...

It's the historic importace of the this fort that puts it on the tourist map, thats it. Architecture wise, nothing much. Its a small fort, most of which was recontructed by British after taking it over from the Rani(queen) of Jhansi, Rani Laxmibai, famous for her bravery and the way she faught with the british army till her last breath preventing them from taking over the city under Doctrine of Lapse.
If visiting the fort, don't miss out on:
1. The Kakad-Bijli Top ( "Lightening" Cannon) placed clsoe to the entrance.
2. Shiv Mandir( Lord Shiva's Temple) located at the heart of fort. One needs to decend from the ground level to reach there. Quite a rush during "Maha Shivratri", an Hindu festival to mark the marriage of Lord Shiva. There is huge Well close to it which used to serve the drinking water to the old jhansi city untill a few decades back.
3. Ganesh Temple(Lord Ganesha's temple) which used to be visited by the Rani(queen) regularly.
4. the Dungeons, quite dreadful and stinky
5. the centrally located 7 storeyed "Mahal"(palace), top 3 stories of which were later converted by British into their office. the bottom ones were recently excavated out by Archieological Survey on India.
6. Place from where Rani of Jhansi jumped over on her horse to ride to Gwalior with her adopted son tied on her back, asking for help from the Scindhia's, as the fort entrance/exit were blocked by the british army. It must by some 15-20 feet of a jump which makes it unusual.
7. Machine guns/small cannons from the british times.
8. Sound & Light show that happens every evening. its fun and educative to watch
9. Panoramic View of the Jhansi City. You can see Orachha(30 km), another famous tourist attraction on the way to Khajuraho, from there.
