- Cris v1 contributionHappy days - a brilliant weekend.Lovely spacious beach and promenade. The Great Western Hotel, although looking grim from the outside, is absolutely lovely inside . All the staff are friendly and helpful. The food was really varied, presented well and delicious. Beds sooo comfortable and rooms well cleaned. A very positive experience!Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 March 2024
- Jo H3 contributionsYearly dance weekendWe have visited the hotel before, the last time being when BW had not long taken it over. They have made massive strides in updating the fixtures and fittings in the hotel. A work in progress, but doing a brilliant job. The beds were extremely comfortable 👍 The staff as always were as helpful as they could be. Michelle and Lisa were particularly attentive during meal service, friendly, polite and happy to help in any way they could, along with their team (some of whom were still in training). The simple redecoration of the ballroom made for a warm, inviting space to spend our time dancing. Again, Lisa and a younger man (didn't get his name) ran the bar effectively. Also, the man doing all the decorating in the front lobby was so lovely. He was working hard to get the jobs done, while also being very considerate of the guests entering and exiting. I hope his coffee cup is always full!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2024
- jules102016Norwich, United Kingdom55 contributionsWales tourThe beach is a lovely wide space of sand. There's a long prom to walk the whole length. Grassy area to sit on . There is a surf club along the road and a fitness centre plus restaurant, but otherwise it's a bit quiet. Maybe because we were not in full Summer season.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 July 2024

Grassed areas good for kids games, dogs etc. The public toilets were free to use and clean. There is free parking on the seafront for up to 2 hours.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 July 2024
- Jessica JCardiff, United Kingdom11 contributionsWell worth a visit! Stunning beachWow this is beautiful! Not as commercialised as the beach in Porthcawl it was huge and the sand and sea was just stunning. We could’ve been anywhere in the world. We walked all along the front. There was lovely areas where we could sit with the children with grass. A lovely little ice cream and coffee place. A bit expensive but needed with the lovely weather. Parking was difficult but got a space eventually.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 August 2024
- Jayno76Treherbert, United Kingdom235 contributionsMust Visit Beach With a Separate Dog Beach Open All Year. This beach is a must visit for people of all ages, the sand is soft and you can walk for miles along either promenade or the beach itself. We normally head to the dog beach at the top end of the front but head back down to the main beach for a coffee or something to eat. There is plenty to do for all families including a play park on site. The parking if your lucky is free but there are charging car parks that are not too expensive.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 August 2024
- Donna JCargill, United Kingdom5 contributionsPerfect clean and tidy beachWhat a wonderful beach and place to visit. The beach itself is spotless and massive. It’s not as busy as the one in Porthcawl where we’re staying. Lots of grass here too to set up our picnic. Plenty of parking, not many toilets, but they are nice and clean, unfortunately there was a big queue. I can imagine it gets really busy here when the sun is really hot. We had a mild day and it was perfectVisited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 August 2024
- Tom FSkewen, United Kingdom4 contributionsWonderful clean beach dog friendlyHad a wonderful day here The beaches are immaculately clean although they allow dogs which is a good thing for us. Little coffee shop on the front however it’s extremely expensive I would not recommend it. Cost me something like £10 for two coffees which I found very expensive especially as we weren’t even eating in. Definitely worth a visit.Visited November 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 November 2024

We visited Aberavon Beach on a midweek day in August with our daughter and her young family. We drove here and parked in a (pay & display) car park in Pier Way and at £2.50 thought it was very reasonable for an all-day tariff.
Aberavon has a wide sandy and shallow sloping beach looking out onto the Bristol Channel. The sand is very fine and clean, ideal for making sand castles and excavating. We did not notice any litter. The beach was not busy when we arrived in the morning though it did become more popular as the day wore on with young families and adults come to enjoy a sunny day at the seaside. We found it easy to find a good spot and set up our windbreaks and other beach paraphernalia without intruding on other people’s personal space, we even got to fly kites!
We had a paddle / swim in the waters with the children, and after adjusting to the water temperature found it to be gently shelving and so ideal to take young children into.
We took a packed lunch with us and so cannot really comment on any other associated facilities but we thought the beach was one of the best (and cleanest), that we have used in recent years.

Aberafon/Aberavon beach is such a lovely place to bring young family. There is crazy golf available and we were so impressed with the splash pad, where the children can play for free in a safe gated environment by the seaside.
Remo’s restaurant was excellent for pizza and Franco’s had lovely fish and chips. All were reasonably priced and great portions with dining in and outside. Great ice cream options too.
Parking was cheap and you could buy an all day ticket and come and go as you liked.
The beach was clean and we spent a few lovely days there. We were really impressed with the amenities and are coming back next year for another mini break!

On the day we visited the beach was very quiet. There were some families and small groups of people who were socially distanced and enjoying the good weather. The beach was clean and there was plenty of space to eat a picnic or fish and chips. It was easy to park and we had a very pleasant visit.

We were meeting friends at nearby Cafe Remos and arrived 1.5 hours too early. We took a wander and used public toilets reasonably clean. Had a coffee at Front they don't do cakes just desserts.
Beach is sandy we didn't swim pleasant for a walk not the most exciting place to go.
Several people swimming and enjoying their day.
Cafe Remos is ok for a casual lunch.

This is a lovely clean family friendly place to visit and have fun. This a nice place to relax and unwind on your own or with others. The is a modern toilet block which is clean and well maintained near the RNLI shop. There is a secracated path and cycle way along the beach front and the sea front is disable friendly. There is a play area for children and a wonderful crazy golf course to have fun to. There is a cafe and restaurant along the front for refreshments. There is street parking behind the beach with plenty of spaces. My only disappointment was a dog owner who didn't deal with his dogs dog poop! Other than that I would come back here again.

A long flat beach, great for sandcastles and bodyboarding, but boy is it windy, so hang on to your hats, and take some wind breaks. We pitched a tent aswell which was hilarious in the wind, but really useful once up. Considering the time of year, remarkably quiet, but our approach to the beach wasn’t the prettiest, through a very densely populated residential area, and the steels works is over the very far side of the beach, not near us but plain to see, so perhaps this puts a lot of people off.
All the requisite, shell collecting, sandcastle building, burying children in the sand (we let them out, honest) was done so a good family visit.

This is our first visit, but certainly won't be the last. We were surprised by the glorious sandy beach and the promenade area. Along the prom you will find several places to eat, a lovely grassed area to enjoy a picnic or bag of chips, a splash pool, children's play area and a cycle path. We will definitely be back, especially as there are retail parks and a shopping centre nearby, it's easy and cheap to park the car and the beach is very clean and spacious.

Our 2nd visit to this lovely clean beach , 2nd visit we had a family day out here , our grandchildren of various ages had a good time building sand castles & paddling in the sea . The beach is more of a wet beach perfect for buckets & spades . Clean toilet facilities & close to cafes , restaurants. Also a children’s park & splash park . Would recommend for few hours out with family or just for a lovely stroll.

Good surf spot, wide open beach, good parking and facility’s. What an earth are they pumping into the water though? I’ve been across all the UK and never seen anything like it. Brown sludge all over beach when tide goes out, smelly bubbly water probably just pumping sewage and waste straight out. Has it always been like this?

Great day out only thing missing is arcades and funfair would really make this place special. Otherwise gets a bit boring. And dull for the kids after they had been there once or twice. If there was more entertainment would. Never get the kids out. They have a great beach and it seems wasted. Needs more to keep me going back

It's such a lovely looking beach but I've heard that, due to the power station, the area smells badly of sulphur. How bad is it really?

We live by the beach and don’t smell it at all so come and see for your self

Are there any restrictions in place for dogs on the beach during August?
Written 5 August 2018
Hi Rhian,
There is currently an order in effect which covers the Aberavon Beach and Promenade from 1st May - 30th September. This prohibits dogs from entering a designated part of the beach and requires dogs to be on a lead at all times on the promenade; dog owners can be prosecuted for failure to comply with the order.
The Neath Port Talbot local council website has all the info you require regarding this. Unfortunately trip advisor won’t allow me to post a link to it. But if you google it it’s easy enough to find and you’ll have all your questions answered then.

Hi is the sea ok for the grandchildren to swim in.
Written 29 June 2018
There are lots of children on the beach every time we go there but the sea can often be out quite a bit on times.
For little ones there is also a small paddling pool just off the promenade area.
There are generally RNLI lifeguards around and a Lifeguard Rescue Station situated there .
Written 29 June 2018
Dogs are not allowed on the main part of the beach. Basically wherever the promenade is located.
There is a dog beach at the far end of the promenade, there is a small parking area there and it is a short walk (20m) to the beach where you can let your dogs run free
