Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We did a weekend private charter on ‘ ‘Reminder’ which sleeps 12. Our skipper Kim & mate Dave were brilliant: very informative, accommodating and encouraging.
We are all dinghy sailors & were keen to take an active role in the mechanics of sailing but I would also highly recommend any of the sails if you just wish to relax & enjoy the experience.

I very much hope that the local authorities choose to keep the Hythe Quay access by continuing to dredge the river. The visitor pontoon is becoming inaccessible & the barges, which for me make Maldon a unique tourist destination will not be able to remain there soon if nothing is done. If you agree please write to the Council to urge them to take action.

Went on a 2hr coffee morning Thames Barge trip with a group of "Last of the Summer Wine" mates out of Maldon, Essex recently. The Topsail Charters team were great from booking the trip, keeping us informed and on board the Hydrogen Thames Barge. The captain of the Barge Paul and his team were really friendly and several of us got to steer the barge. There were some disabled folks on board as well and they even helped the crew raise the sails. What a great experience was had by all. Well done all and many thanks

We were lucky to have a lovely day for our two hour sail on an 1896 Thames barge. It was interesting to see how the crew hauled the sails in and out. Afternoon tea was part of the cost. I imagined dainty sandwiches and a selection of small cakes. There was a Victoria Sandwich and large scones. Both were nice but the cream with the scones was whipped not clotted! So wrong for a girl from Devon!
The tea was below deck and some people had to sit on a wooden beam (originally the hold hatch maybe?) rather than a conventional seat.
Seat pads were in a pile but these were never mentioned in the introductory talk. I would have liked to have a running commentary as we sailed along so I knew what I was looking at as agreed with by the person I sat next to. In the initial talk we were told that he wasn't doing a commentary but information sheets were downstairs.

Fabulous day Saul on Reminder with skipper Kim and second mate David. Not only were both our crew very experienced bargemen, they were professional and very personable. The trip was tailored to the needs, wants and sailing ability of our mixed crew. Novices were encouraged to have a go if they wanted with gentle tuition whilst more experienced sailors were allowed as much involvement as they wished.
We booked a weekend stay on a reminder (available through Airbnb) with a day sail on the Saturday. Definitely recommended if you are already starting on the boat.
My MIL has just said she doesn’t want to leave and wants to go sailing again tomorrow. High praise from a non-sailor!
Thanks to Steph and the team for the east booking and communication.

We went on a 2 hour trip, turning round at Osea island. The weather was beautiful and the sea calm. The crew were very nice and the food was very good and there was enough to eat. I found that 2 hours was enough for me because the seating was hard with no backs and I found it very uncomfortable throughout the trip. The barge was never designed to be a pleasure boat but a working vessel so I really couldn’t expect much more. It was an experience that I’m glad I’ve had, but if I did it again I would choose something more comfortable.

We had been talking about doing a river cruise for some time and finally booked a morning coffee cruise (2hrs) but were a little disappointed.

You sit on very hard wooden benches and at times the barge was barely moving so you don’t get to see much and there isn’t any commentary of information on the areas you are passing.

We purchased the tea / coffee and brownie offer but the brownie was very chewy.

Feels a bit pricey for what you actually get.

We did the Thames cruise in the Hydrogen several years ago and enjoyed it do much that we booked again. This time we were on the SB Will and enjoyed it just as much. Sailing from Tower Pier, seeing the bridge raised for is to sail under it, right down through the Thqmes Barrier and back was brilliant. The weather was great, the food was excellent and the hospitality was very friendly. We will go again.

Beautiful old boat, lovely crew galley staff, We booked the 12 hour estuary tour. Fairly wet weather throughout and not much wind for the sails but that didn't spoil the day for us at all. Top Sail also do many other trips too, some of which would be suitable for romantic sailings, bird watching, River Thames - but maybe on other boats. Loved Hydrogen! Would definitely recommend. Fabulous lunch too with extensive knowledge of a gluten free diet. Breakfast, morning tea, two course lunch and afternoon tea.
