Set high above the village of Wilton, about 9 miles south east of Marlborough in Wiltshire, Wilton Windmill is the only working windmill in Wessex and still produces wholemeal, stone-ground flour. We are open every year from Easter to the end of September on Sundays and Bank Holidays from 2pm to 5pm when the windmill building is open for guided tours. The shepherd's hut shop, serving refreshments and gifts and providing a seating area, is also open at this time, as are the loos. You can visit the Windmill at any time - there is a picnic area with breathtaking views across to the Downs and the building can be viewed from the outside. Dogs are welcome, but please keep them on a lead and pick up any mess before you leave. The Windmill is run entirely by volunteers from the Wilton Windmill Society, so please make a contribution in the donation box by the gate when you visit or make a donation here on the website when you get home. You can also get involved by volunteering or becoming a member. We hope you enjoy your visit. Please do not leave valuables in your car whilst you visit - thieves are known to operate in the area, which is a real shame, but there you go!

Visited on a sunny spring bank holiday. Took a tour with Peter, a very knowledgeable and experienced volunteer guide and miller. Peter took the group up inside to the top of the windmill and explained the process as it would have been (with a few H&S modifications for food hygiene reasons for milling now), on the way back down. The... More

So glad that you enjoyed your visit. We just had the sails renovated, for the first time in 40 years. So it's great to have the mill back in working condition, and to be able to show visitors around what is our pride and joy. Thank you for your kind remarks - much appreciated by our volunteers. So glad that you enjoyed your visit, and especially that you recognised our volunteers. They are indeed the stars that keep our lovely windmill working. As you may by now know, the sails are off the windmill for repair, for the first time in 40 years. We hope to have them back on later this month - you can see... More

Visited Wilton Windmill after visiting Crofton Beam Engine which is close by. The volunteer who took us up the the Windmill was very knowledgable and interesting. Unfortunately the sails were in for repair, but this did not detract from the visit. This is worth a visit if you are in the area.

So glad you found your visit to be worthwhile - despite the lack of sails on the mill. Volunteers are keeping the mill open, and as you say, there is much of interest to see inside. We hope to get our sails back later this year, and they will certainly be in place again for our opening at Easter 2017. More

Great afternoon to see the workings of a windmill. If you visit 'The Swan' pub in Wilton and then walk across to 'Beamish engines' makes a great day out

Glad you enjoyed your visit, Julie. And as you say, the walk to include Crofton and The Swan has to be one of the most interesting in the area. Come again! More

my son and his girl friend took me here ,on a lovely sunny day,it was fasinating,as we are grieving the loss of my husband and a father, it was very spiritual in a way and i managed to push through two of my fears, claustraphobia,as going up the steep and tight stairs in to the windmill gets tighter and more claustraphobic... Gail, that's a wonderful account of your visit. I am so glad that our lovely windmill was able to give you some spiritual comfort after your bereavement. As to claustrophobia and vertigo - heavens you do like a challenge! Well done to have made it up, down and all around the mill. You are certainly an example to many other... More

On top of the hill near Wilton village and exposed to the wind from all directions is Wilton Windmill. Restored to full working condition they have open afternoons on a Sunday in the Summer for a guided tour. The windmill is owned by Wiltshire Council and maintained by enthusiasts, and knowledgeable they are too. Lovely spot on a Summers afternoon,... More

We have a narrowboat in the Kennet and Avon canal. The windmill is a pleasant walk just one mile walk from the canal. Although we visited when the windmill was not working we still very much enjoyed our visit. There is a lovely seating area to eat picnics with super views. Jane, we are so happy that you enjoyed your visit, and that you arrived by narrowboat. That's particularly appropriate since the history of the windmill is intimately bound up with the K&A C. As you may well know, it was the development of the canal that led to a water shortage on the Bedwyn Brook, so putting 5 water mills... More

An interesting windmill, only open on Sunday afternoon for guided tours, otherwise open all year just to look at. A car is needed to get to it - the postcode and a satnav is also a great help, we had only a map and found the sign-posting a bit sparse in places. It is, however, quite impressive and in very...
