Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Interesting items in this small and compact museum over three floors of this gatehouse
the staff were friendly and knowledgeable and the view from the roof was good (but the stairs to get there were steep).

Price was great and the kids had a little game to play finding the nuns on the way round

I have made many visits here with my own children and with those who I care for at the local playgroup. Each visit has been welcomed with friendly and helpful staff who go above and beyond to ensure the children are welcomed and leave with a smile on their face. They ensure the childrens safety as we visit the rooftop and the use of the stairs on the way. Their knowledge of the history of the island is very informative and the displayed artifacts are an interesting talking point. As a family we visit Father Christmas each year and wouldn't go anywhere else. The displays are very thought out, the latest addition of the puppet show was amazing. The volunteers do a wonderful job with special added touches.

Lots of interesting items showing the history of the island, made even more fascinating with the help of volunteer Jonathan who spent time chatting to us and sharing his amazing knowledge of the whole area.
The view from the roof is well worth the climb up the stone steps and the step ladder at the end. Be careful though!

We wanted to visit the Minster Abbey church unfortunately arrived just after it closed - around 3 or 4pm. Then we spotted that nearby is opened museum. We found church and museum are run by the volunteers. In the museum we found many interesting items , a lady who acted like our guide told us a lot from the history of the island and about individual items on display. My husband went up to the tower and said the view was great. We paid a very small entry fee (£1.50 for senior citizens). This was the best experience from our visit to Island of Sheppey.

A hidden gem. I've wanted to visit the museum for some time. I visited today with my 18 year old son.
Incredibly interesting visit, we learned lots of new things about Shepoey. Even braved the roof top viewing point . Well worth a visit. I spoke to a couple who were standing outside, and I encouraged them to go in, which they did .
Photo is from the roof, overlooking Minster Abbeyc

So worth a visit! Have visited many museums - but this is the best for its position, size and artefacts and the valuable knowledge of tour guide volunteers. We received a truly interesting and informative tour of this delightful museum - learning so much about the area and its history. Quite an insight. The volunteers are truly dedicated and friendly. The museum is packed with so many unusual artefacts and archaeology. The view from the roof is incredible. We hadn't realised how important a role this area had played throughout England's history. This museum and its history is in safe hands with this lovely group of people. We fully intend to make a return visit as we learned so much and just enjoyed looking around! Thank you!

Standing at the front entrance to the Minster Abbey Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Sexburga on top of the highest hill on the Isle of Sheppey is the only other part of the 12th century Minster Abbey still standing today - the Gatehouse. Looking from the outside, it is an interesting solid, square building with a crenellated roof. Inside, is the Minster Abbey Gatehouse Museum. We were told that the museum opened in 1982 and that it houses some very interesting exhibits and that, from the roof, there are interesting views over the Isle of Sheppey. Unfortunately, on the day we visited the museum was closed as it is only open on certain days between Easter and the end of September. There is a small car park adjacent to the museum. No doubt, we will return on a day when the museum is open,We will

We did not quite what to except, or even should we go to view the Gatehouse museum, but I am so glad we did. This old place is as its name suggest a part of the Saxon / medieval Abbey, although there is no connection now with the present and attractive church site.
Occupying 3 floors & a fresh air viewing platform on the roof, there are many very interesting and varied exhibits ranging from geology to the infant aircraft industry. But we were so fortunate in having an exceptionally informed and entertaining volunteer, who really bought the exhibits to life, and had some very interesting local tales.
This is a great museum, and was the highlight of our day on Sheppey. It is very smoothly run / managed by exceptional volunteers; the local tourist authority really should promote , and support much more.

What a fantastic little gem, based in a fantastic old building, well worth a visit, cramped to the rafters with historic items, with friendly volunteers.

We were driving through Minster and literally stumbled across this quaint museum. The volunteers there are very friendly and knowledgeable and dedicated to preserving the history of this fascinating and understated little island. A big thank you to Roger Betts and Ken Ingleton for sharing the wonders of Sheppey with us.
