When travelling from Rabati Castle to Vardzia, this is a nice stop on the way. You can walk around the castle, but mind your step as there are no guard rails at all.

This fortress was a place of tolerance in the past where Christians lived alongside Muslims. One can see the Church inside the fortress as well as the Mosque. The Museum as well is full of priceless collections, with comments both in Georgian and English. A great place to spend a couple of hours.

It looks very attractive from afar but inside is nothing much to see. As we’re on our way to Vardzia and pass through the area, we stopped. Otherwise is not worth it to climb

No entrance fee to see this fortress. it is very well preserved and it's not really ruins as you would expect a castle of this age to be. It's just opposite the Vardzia Caves.

If you're going to Vardzia, don't forget to stop at this fortress! It has been builded in Hellenistic Age, even if its actual look is very different from the one it had in the origin. The place is very lonely and quiet, you have to walk up on a little path that begins from the road; in 5 minutes you're on the top of the little hill where the fortress stands. No tourists that day, just a young shepherd that leads his cows all around... The fortress is empty, no guides, you can walk everywhere and go up the tower, paying some attention where you put your feet. Inside the tower there's a little chapel full of typical georgian icons. Your sight surmounts the ancient walls, over the valley of Mkvari river. In 15 minutes you've seen everything and can come back to the car, leaving to Vardzia.

There is a steep walk up to the site from the car park.
Overall, the fortress is reasonably good condition. It is, apparently, one of the oldest fortresses in the country.
Some parts are of the original construction, with additional reconstruction work adding to the overall concept of what the fortress was like all those centuries ago.
Whilst there is not a great deal to see within the fortress, it is worth a brief visit.
The views over the valley. the town and the Mtkvari River are exceptional.

If you travel from Akhaltsikhe to Vardzia, you should definitely stop here and take a look at the fortress. While the ruins itself could need some preservation work, the place is very interesting and played an important role in Georgian history.

I've been driving by Khertvisi for about 10 years, going to Vardzia. I always stop and snap a photo (my favorite spots are crossing the pedestrian bridge to get the shot from across the river, or take the Akhalkalaki road up 200 yards to get an overhead shot). I've also climbed up into the walls a couple of times.
Honestly, this site could be so much cooler with a bit more information. Put up a series of plaques about the history of the place. Was Queen Tamar here? When, what did she do? What is the legacy of the Ottoman slave trade here? Were there any famous slave escapes, revolts? Or maybe battles between Georgians, Persians, Turks, or Russians at this site? We'll never know because the Board of Tourism doesn't have a clue what tourists want.
While I'm ranting, it's nice to see that two toilets were installed near the parking lot. How about installing the plumbing and opening them? Also, build 10 toilets. There are 1000 people passing here per week going to Vardzia and this will number will only increase.
Khertvisi, you're picturesque and magnificent. But as a tourist stop, you only get 3 stars from me just because I think you deserve better.

Nice fortress on the way to Vardzia, well worth and stop and a 5 min walk up to the castle. Nicely restored and makes for great photos. Supposedly Alexander the Great also thought it was a nice castle that he wanted for his own. Not much else in town, but maybe have a few scraps for the friendly dog 'guides' who will welcome you to the site.

The castle is just a shell but it is worth spending half an hour exploring the walled area and towers. The fortress also includes a church be very careful if you explore this.
