Past through Torres del Rio and thought that this church looked pretty cool and old, I would like to know the history behind this building.

Thank you to the volunteer who had it open when we walked by. One of our favorite churches due to it's simplicity in design, and it's history. A few euros and we had a nice brochure and photo, and felt like we were keeping a bit of history alive. Stop in and see for yourself1

While on pilgrimage we stopped at this beautiful 12th century church. It was closed, but there was a note on the door. We called the number, and a lady opened the church in 5 minutes. The simplistic nature of the Templar structures are a great contrast to the Iglesias with their grandiose adorned retablos. As a pilgrim and student of history, I was tremendously grateful to see this site.

As you walk the Camino and climb uphill in Torres del Rio, you will find a little jewel of a church dating back to the 12th century. It's a Romanesque church with an octagonal shape and a starred dome of Arabic design. It is very simple and elegant with a lone crucifix at the back wall. It was one of the few churches that was open as we walked through Navarra. I had almost given up hope of ever seeing an open church since we left Roncesvalles! And as I was saying to myself "Oh no! Not another hill to climb!" this little gem of a church appears before me. Who says the Camino does not take care of you?
