Our family just returned home from an 8 day whirlwind tour of England and Scotland. We spent a day in Manchester and were scheduled to take the train to Edinburgh the next morning. We decided to add a little adventure to that journey, and what a great idea that tuned out to be. We detoured east at Carlisle, and Peter picked us up at Haltwhistle station. His car had plenty of room for our (tall) family and our luggage. He was there waiting for us when we arrived, and his friendliness was apparent from the start. The rain and wind didn’t dampen our spirits (in fact, it made it more fun) as we spent over four hours with Peter touring several sites along Hadrian’s Wall. Peter’s expert knowledge and interesting stories kept our 18 and 15 year old kids incredibly engaged. One felt like a Roman soldier revisiting his old barracks. Peter doesn’t just drop you off at the site, tell you a little info, and send you off to explore; he walks the ruins with you, explaining the little details. For example, he pointed out a notch in the stone that soldiers used to sharpen their swords, a notch that would have been otherwise overlooked. He walked us through the museum at Vindolanda, as well. Rather than getting bogged down, Peter pointed out the most significant object in each case, complemented by interesting stories of its owner or use. Our minds overflowing with Roman history, Peter dropped us of at Hexham Station where we continued our journey to Newcastle and north to Edinburgh, where we arrived in time for dinner!

Our whole family, including the kids, agreed that it was a highlight of our vacation. We can’t give Peter higher praise and HIGHLY recommend spending some time with him if you’re in the area.

Top marks for pre-tour communications, logistics, subject knowledge, teaching manner, friendliness/wit, and understanding his audience.

We spent a wonderful day with Peter and learned way more than we expected to. Peter used Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum as teaching tools, which greatly enhanced our experience of actually walking along the wall when we got to that part of the tour. Both are great museums but Peter explained things in much more depth. He must have been a great school teacher because he made what we saw come to life. We spent a full day discussing things Roman and were never bored. We knew about Romans on the mainland, but had no idea how extensive they were in England.

Our tour with Peter was phenomenal. We always get tour guides when we go anywhere as it's so important for us to learn and really experience new places. Peter was exceptional and we can’t think of anyone better we have had anywhere in the world. His love of history is inspirational and joyful. It was a truly amazing day - we can’t stop talking about our tour and all the incredible things we learned. His story telling is exciting and there was lots of space for some interesting debates and discussions. This tour comes with the highest recommendation possible!

Peter Carney provides a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for Hadrians Wall. He pulls together the why and how Hadrians Wall was built. Amazing knowledge of Roman history in general as well as very specific to England. He really brings the history alive and helps you imagine what it was like during the various Roman periods in England. His excitement about this history is evident in his delivery which makes it hard not to get your mind captivated by his knowledge and get totally engrossed in this fascinating history. We had the pleasure of spending the day on the wall with Peter in early September. We opted for the car tour to take in the Army Museum and Vindolanda as well as a quick visit to a couple of easily accessible areas of the wall. Two of us planned to walk a section of the wall the next day so we were able to gain some great insight into which area would best suit us as well as having more knowledge of what we were looking at as we walked along.

Our group of 5 varied in their interest and prior knowledge of all things Roman and Peter was able to explain and inform all of us in an entertaining way that left everyone feeling they had gained something from the experience. Peter was very flexible in how we went about the day and was very willing to adjust the time schedule as we progressed through the day. Nothing was too much trouble and he was happy to spend as much time as you wanted on any particular aspect of the tour.

Peter also offers full walking tours as well as tours of the Newcastle. I would have no hesitation in recommending using Peters services if you considering a visit to the area.

My family of four adults spent about 7 hours with Peter at Hadrian's Wall and Vindolanda Fort and Museum. The weather wasn't terrific, but the tour sure was. Peter is a former history teacher, and he really knows his stuff. Possibly because of his teaching background, he was able to focus on what my family was interested in and make recommendations based on our interests. We got so much more out of our day because Peter was with us. If you're going to Hadrian's Wall, get Peter.

Peter is an extraordinary guide. He shared not only the "what" but the "why" of Britain Roman history, as well as the possibilities about some of the "whys". Made for a fascinating day out. To say he knows his subject matter is an understatement. Although he has given this tour many times, his information seemed fresh and that he was interested in what he was doing. I highly recommend booking him if you want to learn about Hadrian's Wall beyond the vistas.

I can’t express how much we enjoyed our tour with Peter. He was a font of historical knowledge and we all felt captivated by his commentary of what we saw and more widely about the Roman Empire. Would recommend again and again.

Just want to put in a good word for Peter Carney who leads a fascinating all-day tour of Hadrian’s Wall in northern England. Peter is a retired high school history teacher and he is a fount of knowledge when it comes to the history of the Roman Empire. Peter picked us up at the Haltwhistle train station and spent the next eight hours giving us a very thorough exposure to the background, the building and the demise of this far northern region of the Roman Empire. Fascinating day! I highly recommend!

This is one of the best guided tours I have ever taken. Peter’s love of history is passionate, unfeigned and utterly infectious. His knowledge of everything to do with Hadrian’s Wall is enyclopaedic. He is definitely not the sort of guide who reads from a memorised script; he loves questions, and conducts a conversation, not a lecture. Best of all, he makes the past come alive as he is a natural storyteller, filling his descriptions with vivid detail. He was a teacher for many years (he says he loved teaching, and it shows); his students must have adored him. Take this tour!
