- SteveReading, United Kingdom10 contributionsGreat way to spend an hour or twoBrilliant little museum out in the country. Well priced run by lovely people and a great way to spend an hour or two. Mainly static exhibits but train runs regularly as does the vintage fairground ride.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 August 2024
- m0lsxNorwich, United Kingdom58 contributionsGreat afternoon.A lovely afternoon. The museum is situated a short drive from Norwich in a beautiful rural location. The exhibits are interesting. The costs of both entry & something to drink, are very reasonable & the staff are knowledgable & helpful. We will certainly be returning.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 August 2024

We stayed here during the autumn event. So weren’t actually on the campsite. The event was great tractors, cars, bikes, dogs, Romany caravans … essentially if it’s old it’s here! The museum is nice & the volunteers are knowledgeable. The fairground mirrors & peacocks need a dust! It was great to see, hear and smell the steam operated vehicles & organs. There is a tea bar & a small souvenir shop.
The campsite has lovely views of fields and woods. We are self contained so didn’t use the showers / toilets. They need attention it was like going back to camping in the 80’s & buildings several decades older than that. Choice of nature reserves close by & a mile to the Shoulder of Mutton pub which is independent & has a variety of local ales / spirits plus good food. A peaceful place to spend the weekend or use as a base.

I visited here with my partner when we called out for the VW fab event. A charming little museum. It's great to see the working steam parts. They even have an antique working ride in there. There is also an outstanding christy wonder organ which still works and they have someone come in and play a few tunes on it now and again.
Although the museum isn't massive it's nice to walk around.

I wish someone had written a review so that I didn't waste time on this 'attraction'. If you do go then wear an anorak so that you fit in. The few cars that there were, were OK I guess but little or no explanation of their history. The blaring music and lack of cars added to the misery; luckily the £5 entrance fee was waved and we stayed 10 mins. Didn't go to the Steam Museum which luckily is only open on Sundays: I wonder if the closed sign at the entrance dissuaded both visitors and classic car owners from visiting. Felt sorry for the young girl abandoned in a shed in the field not taking the money.

Its some years since I visited Strumpshaw Steam Museum and as many again before I return. It is with regret that I have to leave a bad Tripadvisor review The museum opens at 10:30 I walked in just after this time, the attendant wasn't even ready, no change in the till, he said he'd take my admission and bring me the change as I walked round( which he did) . Of note the reception desk is also the counter for the cafe area there was a dog loose behind the counter which contravenes health and hygiene regulations.
Wandering around the exhibits there is an air of untidiness such as boxes of things left out, numerous aerosols and odd debri, folded trestle tables in front of a steam engine all detracting from, but telling of an unkempt apearance, too is the open, but clearly not recently used bar/function area, the dirty lifting carpet tiles. the exhibits themselves are either out of order, some in pieces, the brightwork a film of rust.
The volunteers sat around in the café area looked unmotivated, suggest have a tidy up, look at your museum from that of the visitors, get the out the Brasso, light your exhibits with spot lights and circulate yourselves around the exhibits engaging with them, and show what you can do to enlighten the public.

Have visited several times over the years, not your usual huge field event, set in the grounds of an old Norfolk Country House. Lots of static displays from engines to fairground organs. Lovely Museum with interesting oil engines and static engines. Plenty of food, beer, coffee, vintage cars, all you need is sunshine and a sun hat.

We stumbled upon Strumpshaw Steam Museum whilst visiting friends near Norwich. The museum is housed in the grounds of Strumshaw Hall, a large country house set in a beautiful rural location. It is run by volunteers who were enthusiastic, helpful and very willing to tell you about the various exhibits, which include, working beam engines, steam engines. fairground organs and rides.
There are plenty of events throughout the year and you can camp in the grounds and stay for longer. The venue welcomes clubs and hosts car rallies, etc and you can even get married in the museum. There is a narrow gauge railway but it was not running when we visited.

They've got a few interesting pieces, including a couple of large pumping engines and an oil engine, a carousel, a theatre organ, and some large traction engines. So the collection is good, but the documentation is slim. There isn't much information about the collection, and the staff on hand know next to nothing (I knew way more about the oil engine than the staff person). I appreciate they're volunteers, but providing good information is an easy research task. Hopefully things will improve, because they've got good raw materail

Hi,
Apologies for the late reply. Thanks for your comments, we really appreciate feedback from our visitors and will take this on board. As we are run solely by volunteers and being a fairly large museum with lots to maintain, it's tricky to keep on top of everything. I will pass on your comments to the Manager.
Thanks,
Museum team.

Very good value for money, some nice exhibits and well kept if a little run down. Staff are friendly and approachable. If you want to get the real benefit of the museum may I suggest you visit when there is an event. Otherwise it is very quiet.
However if you don't use it you lose it!
We enjoyed it and would recommend to friends and family

Why is no body on hand to answer questions about May bank holiday steam fare.? At the gdsf they answer the phone in there sleep that's why it has grown to what it is.
