Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I'm interested in the history, but then again I teach dangerous goods transport and this remains the largest man made explosion the UK has ever had,

However, the walk can be boggy (we abandoned the first try) and other than the memorial there really isn't anything to see as the vegetation surrounding the site is quite impressive.

As an adult it's OK - but expect anyone under around 60 to be unimpressed.

Visited on a Misty November day, well kitted out for a walk around the crater and down to the Tutbury road.
Moving experience- of an often forgotten event. We will return.
Three observations:

1 Topsoil is clay so proper walking boots necessary- and slippy paths.

2 East Staffordshire walk details say park at the Cock inn- but their signs say for customers only- we did park there.

3 Rest of village attractive with great views- area around church is beautiful.

Attended (organised) a commemoration event for the 75th anniversary in October last year. A guide took everyone on the walk to the crater and then everyone returned to Hanbury Village Hall for a hot drink and two most interesting talks. Really poignant visit.

Have wanted to visit this place for a long time and it didn’t disappoint. Be prepared for a short muddy walk ( wellies required) from the excellent Cock Inn . You have to walk a good distance around the crater to be able to see it’s true size. No photograph or video will prepare you for the true awesome magnitude of the crater, which has to be seen to be appreciated. One of our best hidden treasures that very few people seem to know about .

What is it? A crater. Ok oblivious.
Go find out. Check it's history before you go. Worth it.
Sad but we found it inspiring too!

It is very peaceful here, despite the nature of the disaster. there's no feeling of distress or anger. The trees have reclaimed the land.

This is the crater left by a major explosion and as such there is very little to see. The crater is now covered in trees and foliage and there is no access because it still contains unexploded munitions. Of great historical interest nontheless. There are no facilities or personnel there, so perhaps read up on the explosion before you go.

Bit biased here as live in village near Crater. It is unbelievable really but you don't get the full picture of the size of the crater as it is filled now with trees and bushes. There is a stone cross in the bottom of the crater as a mark of respect to those that were never found. Fenced off all round so you can only walk around it for safety. Need willies on a damp day and there is a bit of a walk across the fields to get to it. Nice when you do arrive though. Dedicated monument is nice too. Good BlackBerrying place in Autumn! Good idea to read up on Fauld Crater on the internet before you go so you understand what happened here. Pub is good too as you can park up here and read the information board in the car park before going to see the crater then come back and have a drink and/or meal. Fantastic views on a good day

This is where the biggest explosion happened in World War 2 in England. A small part of a village disappeared here completely, as neighbouring farmhouses lost attics and shook from the foundations.
in 1966 American soldiers dumped out of date provisions here. Orchids not seen for a hundred years grow here after the soil was disturbed so deeply. It lies above the mines at Fauld.
A mysterious place with an atmosphere

Parking was easy at the Cock Inn pub. A map in the car park shows walking paths and distances. We set off on a short walk (red route). Following a path which is used by the nearby cow herd the ground was very muddy and chewed up. Signs showing the route were present to start with but soon became ambiguous. After a rather steep and very awkward descent we found a wooden signpost lying on the ground and had to guess the route. Never actually saw anything that looked like a crater and were never very sure if we went the right way.
