- gfsc5Perth, Australia1,790 contributionsSurprise findBowood House was new to us and it turned out to be a very good choice. We also visited the gorgeous Woodland Gardens later in the day. There's ample parking and, after a bit of a walk past the Bothy and children's playground, we got to the house and parterre gardens. The gardens are very nice with lots of photo ops. We took our time wandering and then went into the house itself which opened after the gardens. Who knew that oxygen was discovered here? Lots to read about the scientist involved. There aren't a lot of rooms to visit but the upstairs area, in particular, has lots and lots to see. And all very well labelled. We spent a lot of time up in that area. We popped into the shop and were served by Alex who was very friendly. The Stables Cafe was ok (my soup was very nice) but the service was poor. Very slow to actually serve us even though the place hardly had anyone in there to deal with. Worth a visit.Dear gfsc5, Thank you for your review of your recent visit to Bowood House & Gardens, pleased to hear you had an enjoyable visit. I’ll start by saying that the house and grounds are stunning. There is no question. It’s a lovely place to spend a day wandering around, the waterfalls and caves are great for exploring, and the adventure park is brilliant. Sadly two areas greatly detracted from the experience for me and one of which. Bowood should honestly be embarrassed by in my opinion. Firstly the cost. - Lucy B47 contributionsDisappointing visitReally wonderful grounds and well kept. The formal garden, at the front of the residence, is small but beautifully managed, and there are lots of grounds to picnic in. It is very expensive at £17 per adult and Bowood House is, in fact, a tiny part of what was a very large country house, that was demolished several decades ago. In terms of visiting the 'house', it feels more like a lodge or an annexe, and there are only 2 rooms to see, that's it.... So, if you are expecting to visit a large country house, this is not it.Dear Lucy B17, Thank you for your recent review of Bowood House & Gardens, I am sorry to read it was a disappointing visit. - HedworthCirencester6 contributionsExcellent experience for children, beautiful grounds and caring staff. We took our grandchildren and Ukrainian guests. Our grandchildren had a wonderful time in the adventure playground. The grounds are clean and pristine. Our Ukrainian guests were bowled over by the beauty of the grounds and the architecture. I particularly enjoyed learning about Joseph Priestley and his discovery of oxygen in the house. We were very impressed with the solidity and security of the adventure playground. When it was time to leave we found we had lost our car keys. A staff member stayed on to take my wife back over the grounds were she might have dropped them. Another came back twice about an hour after closing time to make arrangements for our daughter to bring a spare key from our house, and a secure way of getting in the now locked main entry gate. Excellent very well maintained facilities and caring staff. Well worth a visit.Dear HedworthCirencester, Thank you for your recent review of Bowood House & Gardens. - Dave PulsNottingham, United Kingdom2,189 contributionsBeautiful house and groundsAmazing house, gardens and walks. The house is only a fragment of the original building but is still magnificent, with about 4 large rooms downstairs and a large exhibition upstairs. The outside of the house and the formal gardens are beautiful. The walk along the lake is rewarding, but the real surprise gem is the "tunnel" to the waterfall, which is amazing - you'll need a phone with the torch function switched on, as the tunnel is unlit, narrow and winding. There are 2 cafes, but it's highly recommended to bring your own picnic. After paying the entrance fee you will want to save some money!Dear DavePuls, Thank you for your review of your recent visit to Bowood House & Gardens, I will pass your comments across to the team. - MugglingmugglesBath, United Kingdom151 contributionsMy experience as a disabled visitorAttended the Classic Ibiza music event Loved the blue badge parking, first year of parking so close to the entrance - previous years the blue badge parking is a little further away. Staff manning the entrance are very welcoming., always organised to a high standard. Having limited walking mobility, had to ask for transport down the steep hill, the negative thing I want to share is, I could not swing my legs up & over a bar in the front next to the driver. I had to try a step up in the back (which was difficult, with limited mobility) someone found a cardboard box for me to use as a step. I would like to see a buggy that is more mobility friendly, to get on. What I mean is something without bars / barriers restricting access to get on the buggy. The concept is great (I have posted before) needs to be less of a taxi to take people down the hill, and more inclusive of people that cannot step up to, or lack the ability to get on the buggy. The staff were lovely, and understood my disabilities. Sadly I had to walk up the hill when the music event was finished (I use crutches) the buggy was taking young intoxicated people from the event, up to the entrance. The disabled loo by the first aid tent was clean & accessible. After last year, I did not use the disabled loo by the toilet block, in case there was no light in there again. Thank you to the staff going up and over their roles to try and help me, making me feel included. Sadly the type of buggy was not easy to get on and off, I am sorry for seeming to be ungrateful.Dear Mugglingmuggles, Thank you for your review of your visit to Classic Ibiza event held at Bowood House & Gardens. - JefyChester, United Kingdom75 contributionsNot NT for once!Called in here as a change from the NT properties we usually visit and it was well worth it. Beautiful Capability Brown grounds with hidden caves, water falls and the usual temple, all within easy walking of the formal gardens. We particularly liked the fact that the signposts said how far away everything was. Lovely long picture/sculpture gallery and interesting exhibitions upstairs. We ate in the cafe which was excellent. Lovely staff . Fantastic children's playground in the gardens too.Dear Jefy, Thank you for your review of your recent visit to Bowood House & Gardens, I will pass your comments across to the team. - OnAir7977794 contributionsNice property with a fantastic, enthusiastic team bringing the history to lifeA great property to visit - although the weather meant on this occasion we were unable to enjoy the gardens. However the experience was enhanced by the fantastic team at the house who were so helpful in assisting our party with access issues and were so engaging in sharing their knowledge. They really made the visit. And the lunch was incredibly generous as well as tasty too.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 September 2024

Haven't been to Bowood since lockdown but spent a very good day out there during half term. Everything was very well run with lots of sanitiser, immaculately clean toilets and plenty of staff monitoring and making sure people were complying with the new COVID-19 rules. The play park is on timed slots which you book on arrival Highly recommend if you are looking for a safe day out with children. Only slight faff was the online booking... if only they would use eventbrite for e-tickets!

Very clear and sensible management of this beautiful property and its surroundings: the golf course, hotel and spa, have a separate entrance from the children's play area, the House and the parkland.
With a long road from the entrance to the car parks, and ticket office, there is no bottle neck - entry was regulated and ran smoothly.
The cate and one set of toilets is right at the entrance, which is only a hundred yards to the ( very enthusiastic) children's adventure play area, and there is some very imaginative, and safe activities. Great fun for the children.
200 yards further on, the house is slightly hidden, but glimpsed from side it is so impressive. It is a lovely setting, and a superb view from the floral terraces.
We were one of the first couples that morning to see the house, ( which opens at 11.00am), and we defiantly benefited from viewing a less crowded house. The house stewards are very helpful, as well as having a wealth of knowledge which they shared with us in a friendly understandable fashion. So much to see, and the rooms as well as the museum rooms upstairs are equally enjoyable.
Outside the terrace is equally impressive, with many stunning statues and sculptures, with exquisite carefully tended formal garden borders - with a back drop of the house, and in the other direction the vista of the lake and parkland.
The grassland leads down to the lake, which is home to swans, herons Canada and grey geese, also the usual mallard ducks, moorhens, coots and we even saw a pair of crested grebes fishing.
It is a lovely relaxed day in a charming, elegant location.

Don’t go if it’s hot and sunny and you want to use the park!
We visited the park on a hot sunny day, 27/28 degrees. Two adults and four children, we paid over £60 to get in. The main reason for our visit was the adventure park, however the slides were too hot for the children to slide on and the bouncy pillows hurt their feet. We tried to picnic but there were so many wasps we made the decision to leave after just over 1 hour. In addition the cost of an ice cream pot at the cafe (which we visited on our way out) was £3.50!!! That’s a lot.
Having spoken with customer service, they couldn’t care less-our choice to come! No good will gestures, no consideration for individual customer’s experience. Very disappointing.
Stick to places that do put sails/marquess/tents over their slides and at least make some effort to ensure that children have a good time too.

Felt compelled to write a review after what I would consider to be an insulting experience at Bowood.
As a young family we’re often out for day trips on the weekend so I like to feel I have a fair basis for comparison when it comes to cost/value for money. Bowood is not good value. At over £17 per adult ticket you are competing with places like the Cotswold wildlife park which is infinitely better value and the same price.
Secondly the cafes and food quality. Service was incredibly slow. Even without being particularly busy. Staff didn’t seem to know how to make coffee, taking over 15 minutes to make two Mochas, and having no syrups available for coffee is an unusual miss.
But the biggest frustration of the day by far came in the form of the ploughman’s lunch. I genuinely feel robbed. Priced at £11.50 to be served a small bread roll, piece of cheese and a slice of ham is grossly disrespectful to your customers. I had the choice to add some jarred Branston pickle, and some pickles/ salad from the salad bar should I wish. But this is absolutely not what I would expect at this price point. Left a bitter taste in my mouth for the whole day and honestly probably wouldn’t have written this review otherwise. The cafe food generally is distinctly average and if you don’t like baked potatoes there’s next to no choice. Kids menu is hugely limited. No reason for this standard at all and would get much more business offering a more comprehensive menu and better service. Do better please Bowood and perhaps we’ll return for another visit. Would also recommend offering picnic boxes in the summer for the many people to enjoy the amazing grounds, but what do I know!

Bowood grounds are lovely, the kids had a great time. However, admission is expensive and despite the website advising that it was open until 5pm, they begun shutting things early, the ice cream kiosk shut around 4.15pm and the play equipment at 4.30pm. Staff then walk around asking people to leave at 4.45pm. Given we had only arrived at 1.30pm we felt a bit short changed! Would be nice if there website was more transparent!

We enjoyed our visit to the house (actually the stables originally as the Big House was too expensive to maintain and demolished many years ago). The laboratory where Joseph Priestley discovered dephlogisticated air (oxygen!) was a modest room for a scientific progress that changed the world.
There were a number of beautiful French clocks, all keeping perfect time, some interesting pictures, a grand chapel and a sculpture gallery.
At that point, the house seemed a bit underwhelming but the guide when we entered mentioned that we should go to the exhibitions. On three floors, there were a wealth of cabinets relating to the history of the owners of the house. Lot's of bling and even Napoleon's death mask.
It was a nice day and we walked to the Temple on the other side of the lake and went to see the Cascade (there are three paths to choose from, the last one you come to is easy, the others with steep uneven steps). On the return, we came across the adventure playground - looked wonderful for adventurous kids with tall slides and a pirate ship.

Wonderful setting with beautiful terraces and views over parkland, complete with follies.
No queues to get in and a nice leisurely visit with no rush. Guides were in almost every room, and there was plenty of written information about the house and individual items.
Lovely sculptures, paintings and tapestries adorn the rooms. Upstairs there are some very interesting mementos of Napoleon Bonaparte. In addition there is a recreation of a Georgian sitting room complete with clothes worn by the ancestors of the current owners.
Due to covid restrictions the cafe was only offering takeaway, but there were decent baguettes and sandwiches and cakes.
There was a playground for children too and good picnic areas.

Bowood's history is very chequered . In 1955 the owners had to demolish the large main house, all that is left is the Orangery which has been converted into a Country house and museum. It is still very interesting if not a little sad.
The gardens are lovely and warrant a long walk. There is a very large kiddies play area which must have had several hundred kids and families, the kids playing on slides and the grown ups picnicking.
Picnicking, is a good idea as the food outlets were poor, no hot food, not much of a selection of rolls and sandwhiches and not very organised staff.

Total waste of money. It was raining when we visited but normally locations like this are good whatever the weather. However what we got for our entry fee was merely a 2nd rate exhibition. This place is everything I hate about museums, no imagination, dry exhibitions and worse still the exhibits had a tenuous link to the location. Very poor. On top of this the restaurant was shut and the staff in the coffee shop were surly

Stayed for Christmas 2020 with family from arrival to departure, Bowood staff made us feel so welcome. All staff members throughout were friendly and approachable, the restaurant was run so smoothly the food was exceptional we were really looked after. Couldn’t recommend this hotel enough. Thank you for having us! Will be back for sure!

Yes in places, especially close to the house on the terrace. We spotted a few seats near the lake and the waterfall. There are places to eat and drink and you can take a picnic also.
Hope this helps
