Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It’s supposed to be the first temple in Tibet. It’s small and nice. It’s on the road to the Tibetan opera and Yungbulakang Palace so if you are in the area it is worth to visit.

Lovely monastery. Beautiful thangkhas and statues. Especially enjoyed watching the monks bring their offerings from first floor to second floor. Off-limits room to women that had a protector statue in it. Massive prayer wheel in front. Small shops including an antique shop in frontof the monastery

This is another very early monastery built by Songtsen Gampo and it is good to see that it has been rebuilt and is a living spiritual centre again.
The main points of interest are the excellent newly repainted murals depicting the life of the buddha and the pearl thanka. This is said to have been embroidered by Songsten Gampo's Chinese wife who also brought with her the famous statue is that now in the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa.
Try to turn all the many prayer wheel in the main courtyard as one needs lots of good joss on these Himalayan journeys!
It has few visitors being so far from Lhasa which gives you a chance to soak up the atmosphere undisturbed.

Small temple but there are a lot of interesting things...especially a Pearl tangka....
This temple has a long history. They said it was built in King Songtsun Gampo era.
Although the mural on the walls are re-painted, they are quite interesting!

Being out of the way, this monastery does not receive the hordes of visitors that the ones in Lhasa do. As usual, no photos are allowed inside. Climb to the upper levels for some of the more interesting parts.

If you have been to Samye, which is in the same area, this monastery will not show anything more. Suppose one reason to visit is to help the local tourist trade, they really need it.

I had to go there twice to finally able to enter. The first day, I arrived late, at 6:15 pm, to be told that the Monastery will be closed in 15 min. I returned the next day around 3 pm. It's small and intimate Monastery. The old building house the Tara hall, which has a small figurine of 'Talking Tara" The Monastery is one of the oldest in Tibet and was built by the same king who built the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, King Songster Gampo and his two famous princesses Wen Cheng and Bhrikuti whose statues were housed in a special hall. The other highlight is the Tara Thangka made of pearls and precious stones in the upstair hall, along with special Thangkas from Japan.

This is another monastry, If you are travelling through tibet you have probably seen a few of them by now. This one has some nice painting/murals on the walls, as well as lot of prayer wheels. One good aspect is that there are far fewer tourists here, making it a more pleasant place to explore than some of the monastries in Lhasa. Stairs to the upper level can be quite steep, but plenty to explore on the ground floor too. Not much to make it stand out from the others though.

This was one of the earliest Buddhist temples but there was not too much to see except for the large gold prayer wheel in front. There was one large piece of art in the interior but not much else of interest.
