We had a lovely lunch, walk around the estate and then a hot chocolate. We paid for 3 hours parking, but ran over due to enjoying our hot chocolate and I foolishly thought it wouldn't matter as it was after 4pm and the place was emptying so no pressure on the car park. I was wrong - unfortunately alongside pay and display there is number plate recognition on entry and exit by TPS (a notoriously aggressive company when it comes to fine collection). I received a £30 fine for overstaying 30 mins on a 3 hour ticket having spent so much in the cafe/restaurant. I contacted Dartington Estate but nothing they could/would do - dissapointing. BE AWARE.

We visited the Dartington shops specifically to go to Tog 24 - their goods are excellent quality and very well priced. We also wandered around the rest of the shops but everything seems a little overpriced other than the shop that sells unique chairs, sofas and soft furnishings (some lovely pieces). Great takeaway coffee and cake in the outside courtyard. My poor review is to do with the toilets in the main building which were very dirty and smelly and looked like they hadn’t had a deep clean in weeks - surely this is even more important at the moment? This needs to be taken in hand when the shops reopen.

Decided to do all my Christmas shopping in real shops and was delighted with my shopping experience - friendly and unrushed. This deserves 4 stars. However, along with many, many others I found problems with the car parking machines which seem designed not to give you a ticket once your free two hours is up. It seems very easy to fall foul of the car parking company. The signs at the entrance telling you you are being automatically photographed are tiny and impossible to read in a car. I spent a great deal of money in the shops and had a pleasant experience, which was marred by receiving a parking charge notice (only local authorities are actually able to levy fines). Unfortunately, although I wrote to Dartington Shops to ask for their assistance as suggested, I did not receive a response. I would personally rather have given £30 to a charity. Hence I've struggled even to give this 3 stars.

I am sorry that it does not seem possible to review the Food Shop separately from all the shops at Dartington. This is simply a review of the Food Shop. A well-spaced and well-stocked shop including freshly made pies and pastries, cheesecakes and gateaux, which are available for purchase by the slice. There's an emphasis on local produce - preserves, chutneys, fudge, biscuits, chocolate and what seems to a teetotal customer to be a wide selection of wines, beers and spirits. There's a good selection of luxury soft drinks too. There is also a chilled cabinet with a selection of cheeses. Like similar shops the prices are at the higher end but, as far as we could tell, we did not have to pay to park and everything was convenient. We had two visits in fairly quick succession but the same result! On our first visit we were served by a friendly young woman who introduced herself as 'Fairly New', which she admitted was an unusual name. The generous slice of lemon cheesecake did for two and turned out to be good value for money. On our second visit we were again served by a friendly member of staff and the generously sized sausage roll also did for two. Friendliness of staff and their willingness to show initiative (e.g. suggesting we purchased packaging for a Christmas gift) counts for a lot with us - so it's really only the price point making this a four and not a five.
