About
The Katogi Averoff winery is in Metsovo, a mountain village built some 1100 metres above sea-level. The oldest parts of the winery date back to 1973, when work began on a new building required to cover the company's ever-increasing production needs. Its cellars can boast over 1200 oak barrels in which our red wines mature, while the winery shop offers rare and collectible bottles of wine for sale from its 1974 vintage on. A guided tour of the winery employs a range of audio-visual media to offer the visitor an original introduction to wine production and the history of the winery, and is rounded off with tastings of a selection of Katogi Averoff wines.

Traditional style hotel but with modern and good amenities- located a little out of the town - about 1 km away - so a short drive and still walkable. It is a pretty hotel and when we were there , it had been dressed up for Christmas and it looked warm and welcoming . Service was good , breakfast excellent and the buffet was set up very prettily. This is owned by the prominent Averoff family who have played a key role in helping to develop Metsovo and they offer a free and interesting 20 min tour of the winery which is adjacent to the hotel that cover the history of the Averoff and also an insight to their wines.

We took a wine tour here. Wines were great and the cellar was interesting. Staff member gave us great insight into the wine and life in the area, and she really made this one of the highlight of our Greek trip!
The winery is also in a beautiful, alpine like area. And they support the care of local dogs! Booking was pretty simple as well and can be done by email.

I have been visiting Metsovo since I was a little kid for winter holidays and sports.
I never had the chance, up until now to visit during summer and I was blown away.
A top destination for both summer and winter trips and one of the must-do experiences is visiting Katogi and having the wine tour and tasting.
An immersive journey in history, spectacular scenery, the most mountainous vineyards, and some of the greatest wines the country has to offer.

Register for the free winery tour which is unusual/fascinating for the rich history the winery and the town share.
Metsovo is an incredibly picturesque place. You can walk to the winery from many hotels - we loved Archontiko Metsovo Boutique Hotel with it's amazing view.

1st of May 2022. Group of 2.
The most mountainous vineyards in Greece, at an altitude of 1100 meters, are in Metsovo. From 1959 the Katogi Averof winery houses more than 1200 oak barrels.
We enjoyed the tour inside the cellars where Mr.Keli Naka (Κέλλυ Νάκα) explained to us the whole process of fermentation. She showed us where the red wines mature and barrels with people’s pictures. Moreover, she showed us the barred-room where the oenologists hold the rare collectible bottles with vintage wines from 1974 onwards.
Furthermore, she presented to us Evangelos Averoff’s memorabilia and personal items while she told us about winery’s flashback history. She explained to us the workers’ struggle to protect the grapes from being eaten by the mountain bears and the barrels’ cleaning process.
Also, we learned that Metsovo is a lucky city that enjoys an Averoff wine that does not sell to the rest of the world. This one called Flogero (Φλογερό).
Our visit of the winery, using a variety of audiovisual media along with Mrs.Naka, concludes with a tasting of Katogi Averof wines. She was so kind and willing to explain all the special wines with their different varieties.
Overall, it was a great experience within a very informative wine tour that you should not miss it.
Bonus: The winery tour was free of charge.
Tip:
- Do not forget to eat at their restaurant, where they inform you which wine matches the food you have chosen.
- If you want to do a wine tasting, just make sure that you arrange it in advance.
- Do not forget to purchase their homemade hilopites, trahanas and many marmalades selling at the gift shop.

We were turned away because they had a tour that was going to be coming in, although there was no one there while we were there. I am really not sure why they couldn't take us on a tour, or at least do a wine tasting. We were at the gardens (which were not in good condition at all) for quite a while and never saw a tour come in. Very disappointing. We went into town and found a wonderful little wine shop where we had wine and cheese instead.

Dear SophiaMaria,
Thank you for your feedback which helps us to improve our services. Due to COVID restrictions, we strongly recommend our visitors to book ahead their tour and wine tasting. So, indeed please make an appointment!
Besides, your comment gives us the opportunity to mention once again that admission in the winery is only allowed to vaccinated or people who have recovered, with the demonstration of GreenPass (SARS-Cov-2 vaccination/disease certificate or the European Digital Certificate COVID-19).
We hope next time you'll visit Metsovo, the conditions will be better and that you will have the opportunity for a tour and wine-tasting.
Best Regards,
Katogi Averoff Team

Γειά σας,
Ευχαριστούμε πολύ για το ενδιαφέρον.
