Den sorte sol - the black sun
Oct 2019
This is an experience not to be missed. The birds form amazing patterns and we felt privileged to see the miigration. It is not guaranteed, though we took a bus tour and the organisers knew just where to go to see the birds massing. Next time we will bring bikes, which would give a bit of flexibility.

Amazing experience
Oct 2018 • Couples
We saw Sort Sol with Sort Safari and it was an amazing experience. The guide Lau is really good and he talked non-stop for 4 hours. His knowledge is incredible including good humoured comments. Only minus is that if you have problems walking about 1 km, this is not a trip for you. I was advised by Sort Sol that max walking was about a couple of hundred meters however it was much more plus up and down a sand dune. Make sure you dress very very warmly because you will sit still for quite a while. -and bring a thermo flask with hot drinks.

Sort Sol - Black Sun
Mar 2018 • Friends
Joined a bus ride to see the Sort Sol. The guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic - both about the nature, history, culture, birds and not the least the starling. It was a cold evening - so bring more warm clothes than expected as the starling do not go to "bed" on command. So we saw them flying around for quite some time. Lovely experience.

Excellent trip to view "gray sun"
Mar 2015 • Couples
Being in Toender for a weekend we decide to take the Gray Sun trip with Sort Safari. And despite heavy rain, we got all we paid for. A great tour guide told us all about the geases they way live and fly between the Toender Marsk and Siberia more than 6500 km travel. And we saw thousands of geases and learn how to get close. Just spetacular!

If you have an appreciation for nature, and you're patient, this is a wonderful excursion.

We went as a couple and joined a few families with older grandparents and small children. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Our guide, Iver was very friendly and spoke both Danish and English.

Before going, we were worried that we wouldn't experience the "Sort Sol" phenomenon since it wasn't the perfect timeframe for it. However, we were still able to see a few hundred thousand starlings landing to sleep for the night. In high season, they supposedly number over a million.

Earlier in the evening, we also saw the marshland, and our guide pointed out some of the other interesting birds of the region.

All in all, we enjoyed this tour, and would definitely go back again during high season if given the opportunity.

The Black Sun (Sort Sol) - natural phenomenon
Mar 2012 • Friends
I was privileged to see the aerial ballet by thousands of black starlings over an hour, starting at the sunset, at Tønder Marsh. The Black Sun is a symphony in motion, beginning slowly with smaller flocks then growing into a crescendo of larger groups, before slowing down then swelling up again spontaneously. Fascinating patterns in the sky, virtually blocking out the sun. The collective rustle of millions of wings resembles the sound of a gushing waterfall.

The scene becomes even more spectacular when birds of prey are drawn to the marsh, eager to hunt the starlings. Their arrival causes the starlings to fly in ever-changing wavelike formations in the sky.

This takes place end March-early April and again September-October time. At this time birds migrate between Scandinavia and their breeding grounds in France, Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Guided tours are not necessary if you are able to find the location yourself (at the embankment of Rømø, in the thickets of reeds at the lake, Rudbøl sø, and at the border village, Møllehus Grænse/Aventoft around Tønder Marsh in southern Jutland).

Make sure to wrap up warm!

Sort Sol
Sep 2011 • Couples
Nature and culture events in the Wadden Sea and the marsh. We went on a guided tour to experience the nature phenomenon of “sort sol” (black sun) – huge flocks (our guide estimated there being approx. 800,000) of starlings coming in to roost for the night in the Tønder marsh. A fantastic sight to see the starlings form formations in the sky.
