The place is serene. We are very lucky to see two different types of northern lights. One is the dancing green monster changing forms rapidly. The other, an array of holy light. Growing up in Taiwan, this experience feels so surreal like a dream.

We booked this trip specifically to see the Northern Lights and is was incredible! Though the weather was against us, our guide Darren beat the odds and got us to see the aurora two out of three nights! Darren was exceptional. He had plenty of stories to tell, planned an excellent day of sledding because the weather was not cooperating for snowmobiling, and was a great snowshoe guide. We were also able to participate in dog sledding and it was amazing. A very hands-on experience, we drove the teams ourselves for 20 km!
The cabins are warm and cozy. We made a fire in the fireplace every night. They have everything you need, including a washer/dryer. We wore the provided snowsuits and boots which provided great protection against the elements. Make sure to bring layers, warms socks, a neck gator, and hat.
Big thanks to Darren for making the trip incredible! We'd love to make it back one day!

AST came highly recommended by a friend who went in 2017. And they did not disappoint. The booking and payment process was smooth, and Piritta was prompt in answering my queries. The cottage is beautiful, fully equipped and well maintained.
Our guide, Darren, is very warm and welcoming, and his passion for auroras is infectious :) Like many reviews here, AST professional guides chase where the auroras are. So, you can be sure your opportunities for a sighting is maximised.
Mama and I were blessed to witness the magical aurora dance right above our cottage site. Simply spectacular!! Also, thank you Darren and AST for the thoughtful gift for mama’s birthday. This has been an experience of a life time.

This was our third attempt, thanks to covid, to travel from Australia to do this highly anticipated northern lights tour. We arrived at Asgard cottages by private transfer from Kirkenes, as we had finished a Norwegian coastal voyage there, and Kirkenes was closer to Utsjoki than Ivalo. We were met by the very welcoming and friendly Darren who showed us to our cottage and settled us in. Darren also informed us he would have picked us up from Kirkenes as it’s about the same distance from Utsjoki as Ivalo. I’m not sure if it was because we were the only guests for the first 4 days, but do ask if you find yourself doing the same. Communication was through a WhatsApp group. Darren kept us well informed on the daily activities and made sure we were comfortable in our home away from home. When out aurora chasing, Darren went to great lengths take us to the best vantage points, sometimes driving 2 hours away for clear skies and the highest opportunities to see the Aurora Borealis, which we did for all but one night of our 7 night stay. An absolute dream come true for us. If seeing the northern lights is on your bucket list, then do yourself a favour and book with Aurora Service Tours. We highly recommend them and Darren and believe it’s the only tour where you’re almost guaranteed to see the northern lights.

I went in 2015 and had an incredible experience each activity.
Learnt to drive a snowmobile , drove up a wooded mountain and had a cooking fire on a mountain summit overlooking a massive valley where Laplanders herd their reindeer!
Went out onto the frozen river in front of my warm and cosy cabin, drilled a hole in the ice (with Tony's help) and tried fishing. Thank goodness I had other food as I didn't catch anything but it was such fun.
Dog sledding was incredible, zooming along calling out Oosh! and controlling the sled and dog team. I quickly got the hang of it and loved swishing through the snow-amazing!
Aurora chasing was the super best experience- got magnificent photos and was on awe through the whole experience.Dressed up warmly and saw sights I'd never imagined before. The stars shine brightly through the Aurora colours- unbelievable!
Definitely a wonderful experience and memories to last me a lifetime.
Congratulations Tony.

If you're looking for your best chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis, then I highly recommend Aurora Service Tours! My husband and I elected their 3-night option in their new Asgard B cabin. Darren picked us up from Ivalo airport on Friday, drove us to a grocery nearby for us to do our shopping. We were the only ones on this tour, so our grocery stop was quick. I do suggest making a list prior of what meals you want to make so it's a quick in and out stop at the grocery. Darren informed us of what will be available in our cabin, so we didn't need to buy certain things. We then drove through Inari and up to Utsjoki. Darren showed us around our cabin and left us for the night. We unpacked and made dinner. Darren texted once Aurora showed up, so we were able to see it on our first night there. We did not plan any daytime activities there, but they have quite a few available should you want to reserve them ahead of time. We used our days to just unwind and relax. Saturday night, Darren came and got us, and we headed out in a snowstorm to Aurora hunt. We drove about 90 mins south only to look back at the live cam at camp and the clouds had cleared. We went back to camp and enjoyed the Aurora and berry juice for the rest of the night. Sunday night, we headed out again to Aurora chase. It was spectacular! We were so lucky to have seen Aurora 3 out of 3 nights in Utsjoki. Monday afternoon, Darren picked us up and we headed to Ivalo airport to catch our departure flight. Darren was wonderful! He was very knowledgeable and even though it was us the 3 of us, we had a great time! Should we ever find ourselves headed to Finland again, we'll definitely be booking this tour again!

Wow. What a great tour of the Northern Lights (and other fun activities). Darren, our guide was great... knowledgeable, funny, and kind. He found our little group the "lights" all four nights we were there. The cabins were very nice, plenty of room, warm, comfortable furniture, well lit with dimer switches, a nice sauna. Plenty warm. Nice fire place. Fully equipped kitchen. They provided firewood, boots, and snowsuits. They also have a couple of sleds and other odds and ends for your use. We also took a snowmobile session which was great fun...especially for first timers like us.
A few things to remember:
- It is COLD up there. Minus 27 one night. And since you are standing in one place for a while, it feels cold. So be certain to bring thermal underwear tops and bottoms, heavy wool socks, excellent gloves, and balaclava (full face mask). For me, my fingers got cold because they needed to be out to use the camera. And my cheeks got cold. And sometimes my toes. No kidding, it gets cold.
- They do provide laundry detergent, hand soap, body soap, BUT NOT shampoo or conditioner.
- Food. You are responsible for your own meals and snacks. When they pick you up at the airport you then go to a grocery store. It is a decent grocery store but nearly everything is in Finnish. Also note that prior guests may have left odds and ends like salt, pepper, sugar, and such....but think through what you may want for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and to drink. You might be lucky and the prior guest may have left coffee and/or tea but you can't count on it. Same with things like cooking oil. Don't forget the shampoo and conditioner.
- Restaurants - there are only a couple and they are a long walk away (probably 2 km.) We did not eat in them so we can't say how good they are. There is a little store (also 2 km or so.)
- Walking around - We did walk one day to (and over) the bridge that crosses the river to Norway. It is near the restaurants, gas and convenience store. Again about 2 km each way. It was fun. There is very very little traffic and we saw reindeer on the way.

Seeing the Northern Lights has been on my bucket list since childhood. A friend and I took this trip specifically because of the high probability of seeing the lights. We scored four nights out of four! On Night Two, guide Darren drove for a couple of hours through a snowstorm and found a fifteen-minute hole in the clouds with a wonderful sighting. Night Four was during a period of solar coronal ejection, so the viewing was spectacular.
The cottages are cozy, comfortable, and warm. The daily activities are optional, but I'd recommend doing at least one. I did the dog sled ride an hour away in Norway, and it would have been worth the whole trip even without the Northern Lights. (Visualize a yard full of dogs when someone says, "Who wants to go for a walk?") Other guests spoke highly of the snowshoe trek and the snowmobile ride as well.
This is right up there on my life list alongside the safari in Tanzania. Highly, highly recommended! Oh, and try to go when Darren is guiding. He's terrific!

WOW! If you want an experience like no other based in the wilderness in a luxurious cabin. ( i mean luxurious. Washing machine. Dryer. Dishwasher . Wet room etc) with a friendly knowledgeable guide AND the added bonus of the perfect night light displays. Look no further. AURORA SERCIVE TOURS is the answer.
We booked for my 50th and the whole experience from start to finish was seamless. I don't think I stopped smiling all week.
We flew in the night before to Ivalo from Helsinki and stayed at the hotel Ivalo a short taxi trip from the airport and around Eur 30.
Darren, our guide picked us up in the minibus the following day around 2pm from the hotel. This is where we met the rest of the group. All lovely people. A short stop at the SMarket in Ivalo to shop for your week was next on the agenda. Be advised that your cottage has basics from previous travellers. I.e. Dishwasher tablets. Washing up liquid some rice. Pasta and sugar. You take your chances here but it would appear that all cabins had the same.
2.5 hours in the mini bus through the most beautiful countryside took you to Utjoski a very small town with a pub. Restaurant and small shop.
Just outside the town away from all civilisation is your cottage. Wow wow wow. Based on the edge of a frozen river and overlooking Norway. The cottage has underground heating and a toasty fire. It is stunning! The grounds are so peaceful with 2 Kotas ( fire huts) plenty of huts with spare wood. A hut with snowsuit. Sleds snow shoes. Boots etc and of course the Tower!
Darren let's you get settled in and adds you all to a Watsapp group so that he can keep you updated theoughout your stay. You have use of everything on site and can sign up for as much or as little of the activities on offer.
Our first day we walked to Norway! About a 45 min walk across a beautiful Bridge and back into town to the pub and to pick up a few extras at the shop. There is literally no traffic here so all very safe.
The rest of the week we signed up to the Tana Huskies. Amazing experience, made better by the genuine love for the dogs who are family and very well looked after.
The following day was snowmobiles over a frozen lake through a forest and over a WW2 airfield a short stop at a cafe to warm up with hot chocolate and delicious cake. What an experience.
Then of course..... the main highlight. The lights!!!!! Darren will go out of his way to find a break in the clouds to find these for you. Some nights that could mean jumping on Bessie (the bus) and hunting them down and quick stop off in a layby' everyone off the bus and then boom! Absolutely spectacular. 2 nights we were able to view from the Tower. Either way. You will see them as Darren will make sure you do ! Timings and how you are going to view them are sent to you via the watsapp group and you can also view via the live feed from the tower. all you have to do is be there and ready for the time of your life.!
A massive thanks to Darren that made you feel like you had been friends for life. Whilst the whole experience was out of thos world amazing. Darren was the cherry on the top! Book this trip you can't go wrong!

My 2nd visit to Northern Lapland with Aurora Service Tours ,I didn't think they could improve on my 1st visit ,how wrong I was !
My guide for the week was Darren (what a superstar ),great sense of humour, very knowledgeable & went out of his way to ensure the visit was a huge success .
My expectations were exceeded on arriving at the Chalets ,I was blown away to be given one of the new ones ,I loved chalet 5 but this one was like being in a 5 star hotel .Thank you so much AST ✨️
Ours was a small group ,just myself & a lass from the USA ( Ryan) & we got on immediately which made the trip even better .
Darren took us Snowmobiling, what an absolute blast...even falling off & getting stuck was great fun 😁Darren ensured we were safe all the time ...I'd thoroughly recommend this option ,zooming across a frozen lake in glorious sunshine is an incredible feeling !
We were so lucky with the lights ,2 nights gave us incredible displays (that didn't want to stop ) which resulted in Ryan & myself staying out at camp until 3.30am both mornings. Thankfully we had the Kota below the viewing tower to nip into for a quick warm up as ,at -16 ,it was a tad chilly 😳
On the other nights Darren took us out in the company minibus ,chasing clear skies for miles ...the 1st night we dipped out due to fog & heavy cloud but the 2nd night Darren kept going & got us under a short cloud break to see them dancing above us . The lights are unpredictable & not gaureenteed but AST will do everything in their power to get you under them .
I can't speak highly enough of Aurora Service Tours , Piritta in the office is friendly, efficient & very helpful throughout the booking and Darren was a 5 Star guide.
I will be back 😁

hello,
when it shows you what you will do every day, it says you have the option of doing a snowmobile adventure and husky sledding. is that included in the price or do you have to pay extra for that?

Does any cabin have double beds or all are single beds? Is the cost pp different for single person staying or for twin sharing cabin?

The cabin I was in only had single beds, three in fact, I was travelling solo so didn't really think about it. I didn't go to any other cabins so have no idea on set up.
I paid same as everyone else and had the whole cabin to myself.
I would suggest contact them directly about bedding configuration, they are pretty good at responding quickly.
Honestly there is no better Aurora tour service! I highly recommend them, if you are lucky enough to get Dan as a guide even better!

Hi,
What gloves / mittens are provided, please?
We have thermal liner gloves but need outer gloves. Do we need to get our own, or are they provided?
Thank you

Your hands and feet will get cold quickly and you will need warm gloves. We wore thermal liners and mittens over the top as recommended. We also took hand warmers to slip inside. You will also need good boots with enough room to wear plenty of socks we wore three pairs every time we went out. The feet were the first thing to feel cold closely followed by the hands. Hope you have a fabulous time.

IAre your chances increased in seeing the aura borealis nightly the further north you go in the colder winter February versus March? Also, how far a walk is the restaurant you were speaking about? Is it relatively close to the cabins?

Hiya,
You stop off at a supermarket on the way to your cottage. I found that prices are similar to the UK supermarkets but of course some things may be a little more expensive.
Your guide will give you a translation sheet which is very handy when you go in. The middle of Jan 2019 I found quite a few Tesco items in the supermarket so keep an eye out for them (cookies, teabags etc)
In my cottage there was lots of basic items such as salt, tomato sauce, washing up liquid etc. But I’m guessing some are just left by previous guests. I left whatever I had left like drinking chocolate, porridge etc. So maybe best to ask what your cottage has already.

Hello, we are coming over in Feb 2019. Would anybody have any suggestions for a suitable camera to take pictures as I can't afford a DSLR. I have a point and click camera. Anyone used a point and click and got a decent shot of the Aurora? Thanks

I would also recommend a tripod. You need slow shutter speed & wide aperture so tripod is pretty much essential. Good luck.

Has anyone from Scotland (Edinburgh) gone late November for a mid week tour & if so what was your travelling itinerary to get there? We're struggling with flights, having 2 stops & a 35 minute connection time from Helsinki to London on our return, which I'm very nervous to do. TIA.

Me and my family are travelling to Finland between several locations in early February 2019 and we need some advise for our trip.
We will be driving from Rovaniemi to Nellim on E75 and Route 969. (4 hrs drive according to Goggle map)
We will stay in Nellim for 2 nights, then head to Utsjoki for the Aurora Service Tour. (2.5 hrs drive)
After that we will drive all the way back to Rovaniemi. (5 hrs drive)
This will the first time for us driving around Finland in this season.
Is there anything that we should worry about?
Is the above plan seems reasonable?
And has anyone of you ever experienced road closures due to bad weather in Finland during early February?
Thanks a lot!

I can't help you with the specifics of conditions for those roads but my advice would be: don't be in a hurry, slow down and enjoy the scenery; there are many trucks on the roads up there and while their drivers are considerate they take up a fair share of the road; also be vigilant for reindeer on the roads; they belong to the local Sami farmers who depend on them for their livelihood. My daughter and I had a wonderful experience with Aurora Service Tours in October; I'm sure you will too. They might be able to offer more detailed advice.
