Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

From the imposing recreation of a very unusual train accident at the entrance, one would think this is just a train musuem. And though trains do play a special part in the attractions inside, it's a bit more than that.
A young man in the 1950's started a hobby of recreating vapour-powered machines - and over time these were put in model settings representing several locations around the world which had influence in the history of energy generation. The guides/monitors, who are necessary for the visitors to get the full jist, are continously available, including some who lead English or Spanish-speaking groups. It's a brief, but truly educational and enjoyable tour. By the way, the machines are in working order and one, for example, creates paper for the visitors to take home as a memento.
There are nice spaces for kids to experiment - not quite on the level of kids' museums in the US, but for Brazilian standards, above average.
There is a simple train ride, which will be upgraded; the current one really is aged and though adults and kids go on it, it's more like a kiddie-ride. It's the only outside activity.
Something else that will be improved is the lovely train model - which shows how one would have traveled by that form of transportation from the capital Porto Alegre to Canela (unfortunately, train transportation fell out of favor in Brazil in the 1950s). Currently, the trains aren't doing the rounds that fascinate kids and adults alike.
We also enjoyed taking a family picture in the "historical photo" area. And the souvenir store actually had really reasonable prices, as it was doing a post-Christmas sale.
All in all, a really worthwhile attraction to visit while you're in Gramado and Canela.
Disclaimer: I know the current operations manager, who invited us. But we noticed the prices were not exorbitant at all (if you're a student, R$ 20).

There is actually a steam train falling from the window! The story is that the steam train is a replica from the one that caused an accident in London in 1800's. The train in London didn't stop and crossed the window. Only one person died at the time. A old lady had a heart attack.
The place is full of machinery small and mini working only with steam. Instructor are available to explain how things work and answer questions. However, please note that Gramado and Canela, both cities are very famous for the internal tourism and nothing there are really for foreign. What I mean is that everything is really around the people that leave in Brazil and travel to that region. So, there is no signs in EN or people speaking En, you can find but it is not a primarily concern. So, if you don't speak Portuguese be prepare to use your EN/PT dictionary a fair amount of time. Mundo a vapor (Steam World) is a must to go!

They have an impressive collection of miniatured and fully functional machinery that are landmarks in the human industrial developments. The whole visit is guided by the staff who also demonstrate the operation of the machinery. Great for people interested in learning history, energy, engineering etc.

I had no expectations for this attraction, nor I knew what it was about before visiting. I assumed it was for kids only, but I was wrong. I must say I was pleasantly surprised and that I highly recommend it. You will learn a lot about the Industrial Revolution here, miniatures of steam engines, factories and mills throughout the building that actually function. They offer entertainment by giving guided tours of how the processes worked back in time and will even provide you a souvenir of paper made in real time from the smallest paper mill in the world ( according to them ). It's quite interesting, I normally get distracted in these type of attractions but here I was very engaged. The facade of the building is actually a replica of a real life event that took place in Paris in the 1800's when a locomotive lost its brakes and climbed a wall getting stuck there.... surreal! They have guides who speak fluent English so if you choose you may ask for one at the box office.

This museum is unique. Basically a collection of miniature steam-powered machines that do everything from generate electricity to break rocks and make paper. Unbelievably clever and extremely well laid out.
So what is my beef? There was not a single nod to the international crowd. All the signage is in Portuguese, as was all the narration. My Portuguese is good enough to get by in one-on-one simple conversations, but I found it very difficult to get more than the broadest sense of what each demonstrator was talking about.
The solution is easy: English is the international language, and if they would just add some English signage, then the problem would be solved. In general I loved the fact that Gramado/Canela does NOT cater to the foreign tourists, but in the case of the "World of Vapor" a small nod to us estrangeiros would have been greatly appreciated!
