Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Going Abkhazia is still one of the more unusual activities if you decide to visit Black Sea and Caucasus Region. Caused by its internationally un-recognized status, the visit needs some preparation (VIsa, BorderCross, Transfer) to avoid issues but is worth all the efforts.
In any case "Discover Abkhazia", business run by locals Shamil & Ayten plus Ms Sophie from Britain, will assist you with preparation and create a tailor-made trip reffering to your interests. Triggered by the story of my fathers youth camp experience in the 70s, i was fascinated going there myself exploring the unique coastline along the black sea with its once famous resort towns like Gagra and Pitsunda, but mostly its small capital Sochumi and famous Monastery New Athos.
Visiting Lake Ritsa, located in the mountains and also hiding one of Stalins Datcha's, has its own mysterious misty atmosphere. You are driven and accompanied by motivated, active and sophisticated young people learning about history and their views on the country. There are a lot more of exciting places (Kodori Gorge) and activities in the mountains that want me to return one day.
Discover Abkhazia would be first choice to make it happen!

I hired Discover Abkhazia back in April 2019. We spent an intense day criss-crossing the region. Shamil was a knowledgeable guide and a very agreeable companion. We visited several fascinating areas in would never have found on my own - in particular the exploration of abandoned sites was a highlight and should be a must for the curious and adventurous traveler who made it this far. Shamil even kindly picked up some stamps and mailed them to me after I had left as a souvenir. Thanks for you help in building a very memorable experience.

We had a great short trip and would highly recommend using Discover Abkazia. Ayten liaised regularly with us in advance and Shamil was a great tour guide on the day. There are some lovely and really interesting places to visit in Abkazia including Lake Ritsa and the New Atos Monastery/cave complex.
Despite what you may read online we felt very welcomed in Abkazia, the people were friendly and food great. Don't forget to take a bottle of the local wine home, fantastic!

In September / October 2019, Shamil guided me and a group of tourists for six days through Abkhazia. I can’t recommend Discover Abkhazia enough for its flexibility. Whatever we wanted – transfer from the border, help making our visa registration, celebrating Independence Day, a look at mosaics and bus stops – Discover Abkhazia finds a way to fit it in your itinerary and will give you expert advice.
In our time in the country, we saw Lake Ritsa, Novy Afon, Anakopia, Sukhum, Gagra, Akarmara and more - which still leaves plenty to warrant a return trip someday. Shamil is great company. He loves to chat and shares a ton of insight. The history of Abkhazia, the origin of the flag, chacha toasting traditions – you name it and Shamil will tell you all about it.
In a country our government doesn’t like tourists to visit, we always felt safe. The Abkhazians we met were welcoming, without exception. There might be few states that recognize Abkhazia as a country, but a visit is highly recommended.

Shamil and Aylen are the best! They took us around this tiny but beautiful country. It's history of bloody wars and struggle in nothing diminishes its beauty. I highly recommend their services for a minimum of 3 days visit.

We had the best time with Shamil, a great tour guide and such a pleasant guy, always up for some great experiences.
For 3 days he showed us how amazing Abkhazia is. We had great food, seen best views and experienced the wild and adventurous side of Abkhazia.
With the help of Shamil, visiting Abkhazia is something I took with me, and I will remember it forever.

For the fact that I didn't even know about the existence of this part of the world some month before actually going to Abkhazia I really had a fantastic time there. Delicious food, fun activities, magnificient and diverse landscapes, interesting people with interesting stories - there's something for everyone looking for a trip out of the ordinary. Highlights included visiting Stalin's dacha, a camping trip to the mountains and a sightseeing flight around the central parts of the country. Tour guides were very competent and fun to hang out with. Can totally recommend!
